Someone filed for ny unemployment using my info - what do I do?
So I got this surprise letter in the mail on Saturday from ny unemployment saying my claim had been approved. Problem is, I didn't file for unemployment! I've been at the same job for over 3 years now. Called my employer immediately and they confirmed nobody filed anything on their end either. Someone must've stolen my identity and is trying to collect benefits using my information. I'm freaking out because I have no idea what to do. Called the unemployment office like 12 times today but couldn't get through to a real person. Tried the fraud hotline too but got disconnected after waiting for 45 minutes. Has anyone dealt with this before? How do I make sure I don't get charged with fraud for something I didn't do? Will this affect my taxes or credit score? Really stressed right now.

Call your bank and freeze your credit ASAP. Also file a police report. Same thing happened to me in November and it was a nightmare to clean up. Print out all communications about this for your records. Also check if any other accounts have been opened in your name.

•Thanks. Did freezing your credit stop them completely? I already checked my credit report and don't see anything unusual yet.

•Freezing credit helps prevent NEW accounts. For the unemployment fraud specifically, you need to contact ny unemployment and let them know. But good luck getting through 🙄 took me like 3 weeks

•police reports are actually important here - they give u documentation that YOU reported it as fraud which helps if theres any questions later

After trying to get through for weeks, I found this service called Claimyr. They basically call the unemployment line for you and connect you with an agent when they finally get through. Was the only way I could actually talk to a real person about my identity theft issue. Worked so well, the agent I spoke with got my case flagged for fraud investigation immediately. Check them out: claimyr.com - it was worth every penny to get this nightmare sorted out. Here's a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•not a scam at all! I was desperate after trying to call for 3 weeks straight. they just help you skip the phone queue. talking to a real agent got my account fixed in like 20 minutes

•I used it last month for a different issue (missing payments). Got connected to an agent who fixed everything. Before that I spent 2 weeks calling myself with no luck.

This happened to me too! Report it on the ny.gov website - there's a form specifically for reporting unemployment fraud. Also call the FTC identity theft hotline at 1-877-ID-THEFT and fill out their online form. And check your credit report from all 3 agencies.

The unemployment system is so messed up right now. Identity theft claims are through the roof. My cousin works for NYSDOL and says they're completely overwhelmed with fraud cases like yours. Don't stress too much - they've seen this before, but you DO need to be proactive about reporting it.

•Does your cousin have any insider tips on getting through to a real person? I'm going crazy trying to resolve this!

•he says early morning calls (like right when they open) have better luck. also try the fraud number specifically not the main line

I hate to be that person, but have you made sure it's actually from NYSDOL and not a phishing attempt? There are scams where they send fake unemployment approval letters hoping you'll call a number they provide and give personal info. Double check the letter against official samples online.

•The letter looks official with the right logos and everything. The phone number on it matches the official unemployment number too. But good point - I'll double check everything.

Alright, here's what you need to do (I work in fraud prevention): 1. Report the identity theft to NYSDOL through their fraud form: https://dol.ny.gov/report-fraud 2. File an identity theft report with the FTC at IdentityTheft.gov 3. Contact all three credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion) and place a fraud alert or credit freeze 4. File a police report - this gives you documentation for future reference 5. Send a written notification to NYSDOL certified mail with proof you're employed 6. Keep detailed records of all communications If you need to speak with someone urgently, try claimyr.com - they'll connect you with an unemployment agent so you can explain the situation directly. I've heard good things from people who couldn't get through otherwise. Lastly, don't panic! This is happening to thousands of people right now. The state knows it's a huge problem and they have processes to handle it.

the real issue is WHY IS IT SO IMPOSSIBLE to talk to anyone at unemployment?? It's like they don't want us to report fraud! I bet the fraud numbers would be WAY lower if people could actually reach someone to report it when it happens 🤬

Check your mail carefully for the next few weeks. After someone filed a fake claim with my info, I got a tax form in the mail (1099-G) showing 'benefits' I never received. You'll need to dispute that with NYSDOL or you'll get taxed on money you never got!

•Omg I didn't even think about tax forms. That would be a nightmare. Will keep an eye out, thanks!

Side note but be sure to change ALL your passwords and enable 2FA on everything important. If they got enough info to file for unemployment, who knows what else they might have access to.

Have you checked if you've had a data breach? Go to haveibeenpwned.com and put in your email. Might give you clues about where your data got leaked from.

•Just checked - looks like my data was in the T-Mobile breach last year 😖 That explains a lot
