Desperate for mayor's office number to help with fraud on my NY unemployment claim

Someone stole my identity and filed for unemployment using my information in October. I only discovered it when I randomly received a determination letter in the mail in November saying I qualified for benefits - but I never filed!! I immediately called the fraud hotline and reported it, and they told me they'd put a hold on the claim. Here we are in February and I'm still getting tax forms showing $4,800 paid out in my name that I never received! I've called the regular unemployment line like 40 times but they just transfer me to the fraud department who puts me on hold forever then disconnects. I'm genuinely worried about my taxes and credit score now. Has anyone successfully resolved identity theft with NY unemployment? I'm thinking of going straight to the mayor's office to get actual help since the regular channels aren't working. Anyone have that number or other suggestions?

I went thru something similar last year when someone filed for benefits using my info. The fraud hotline is practically useless. You gotta file a police report ASAP - that's what finally got things moving for me. Then contact the IRS to let them know the 1099G isn't yours. Also freeze ur credit if you haven't already!

Thanks for the advice! Did you have to go to the police station in person or could you file online? And how long did it take for everything to get resolved after you filed the police report?

Had to go in person. Took about 3 months total to get everything sorted and get a corrected tax form. Bring all ur documents when u go to the police. The detective actually said they've seen tonss of these cases.

police reports r kinda useless tbh, they just file it away and forget about it. but ya need it for the paper trail

After spending weeks getting nowhere with the regular channels for my unemployment fraud case, I tried this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that connects you directly with a real person at the unemployment office. Best decision ever! They got me through to an actual human who could help me escalate my fraud case. Talking to an agent got my situation sorted so fast compared to the endless hold times. Check out this video about it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

This sounds too good to be true. How does it actually work? Did they actually resolve your fraud issue?

It works exactly like they say. They basically wait on hold for you and then call you when they get a live agent. Saved me literally hours of hold time. And yes, once I got through to a real person, I was able to get my case escalated properly and they resolved it within 2 weeks.

sounds like a scam to me... has anyone else used this?

Not a scam, I used it last month when my benefits suddenly stopped. Worked perfectly - was honestly shocked how easy it was after weeks of trying to get through myself.

wait, so its just a service to get through to a real person? if thats all it is then its actually genius ngl

The mayor's office isn't gonna help with unemployment tbh. That's a state program, not city. You need to contact your state rep or assembly person - they have constituent services specifically for this. They can escalate better than anyone else. Google your district and reach out to their office directly.

Didn't think about that - good point! Do you happen to know how to find my district? Is it based on my zip code?

Yep just google "find my NY state assembly district" and enter your address. Their offices deal with unemployment issues ALL THE TIME so they know exactly who to contact. Way more effective than mayor's office.

THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM RIGHT NOW IN NY!!! 🤬 My sister just went through this exact thing. The unemployment system is completely broken when it comes to fraud. What worked for her was filing an identity theft report with the FTC at identitytheft.gov AND contacting the state attorney general's office. The regular unemployment people don't have the authority to really fix this stuff efficiently.

Have you tried reaching out to the Department of Labor directly via Twitter? Sounds weird but I've seen them respond to people having issues there faster than through official channels. Worth a shot while you're pursuing other options.

I don't have twitter but maybe I'll create an account just for this. Did you see them actually resolve issues or just acknowledge them?

Both actually. They usually respond with "please DM us your contact info" and then they have someone call you. Much faster than waiting on hold forever.

Listen I had the EXACT same problem last year and heres what u need to do: 1. Call the fraud hotline early in the morning (like 7:55am right before they open at 8) 2. When they answer immediately tell them you need to speak to a supervisor about identity theft 3. Don't let them transfer you to the general queue 4. If that fails try claimyr.com (it worked for me when nothing else did) 5. File an FTC identity theft report 6. Contact all 3 credit bureaus to put fraud alerts on ur account 7. File IRS form 14039 (identity theft affidavit) It took me 2 months but I finally got everything cleared up. Oh and DOCUMENT EVERYTHING - dates, times, who you spoke to. You'll need it.

This is solid advice. I'd add that you should also notify your employer's HR department so they're aware someone's using your info.

the 7:55am trick actually works for most govt offices ngl 💯

Thank you!!! This is super helpful. I'm setting my alarm for tomorrow morning. Did you have to file a separate police report too?

Yeah, police report is important too. Some places won't help u without that report number. I went to my local precinct with all my documents and they gave me a report number right away.

i don't have the mayor's office number but the Attorney General's office might be more helpful anyway. they have a specific division for unemployment fraud: 800-771-7755

Wow NY unemployment is such a joke lmaooo. Been there done that with the identity theft thing. I gave up on the fraud hotline after 3 weeks of trying and just contacted my state senator's office. They have staff specifically for helping constituents with state agency problems. Got it sorted in like 10 days after that.

Honestly the state senator route is the way. Their offices deal with this crap all day everyday and know exactly who to call

Which senator did you contact? I'm in Brooklyn and wondering who to reach out to

I'm in Queens so different district but just google "NY state senator" + your neighborhood. Their websites all have constituent services forms. Fill it out with ALL the details.

You definitely need to contact the IRS directly too. They have a specific process for this situation where you can get the incorrect 1099-G removed from your tax records. Otherwise you might get flagged for unreported income.

The ny unemployment system is GARBAGE for handling fraud 🤦‍♂️ My cousin waited 6 months for them to fix his fraud case! What finally worked was using claimyr.com to get thru to a supervisor (not just a regular agent) who could actually help. Regular agents just read from scripts and can't do anything useful for fraud cases.

is claimyr actually worth it? i keep seeing it mentioned but seems odd to pay for something the govt should provide for free

100% worth it when you consider the alternatives. I spent literally 20+ hours trying to get through on my own. Then used claimyr and had a resolution within days. Time is money ya know?

I used it too after seeing it here and yeah, it works exactly as advertised. Got through to an actual human who helped me fix my claim issues.

Pro tip: If you're dealing with identity theft with unemployment, you also need to report it to the US Department of Labor's Office of Inspector General. They have a specific fraud hotline at 1-800-347-3756. This is actually more effective than just the state unemployment office for ID theft cases.
