NY unemployment payment delayed - 14-day deadline to complete ID.me verification after 5 months of normal claims
I just checked my account and noticed my weekly payment didn't come through last week. Then I discovered a notification saying I need to verify my identity through ID.me within 14 days or my claim won't be processed. Here's exactly what the notice says: "Your claim for unemployment insurance (UI) or Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) benefits is pending verification of your identity. New York is now using ID.me to verify the identity of some UI and PUA applicants. Please visit https://on.my.gov/IDme to verify your identity. This is the only link you should use for identity verification associated with unemployment benefits in New York State. You may use any computer or mobile device to access the ID.me services. When signing into the ID.me system, you must use the same email address that you used to file your claim for benefits. You must verify your identity within the next fourteen (14) days. If you do not, your claim will not be processed. The sooner you verify your identity, the sooner your claim can be processed." This came completely out of nowhere - I've been claiming since November without any issues whatsoever. I've already been getting payments for 5 months with no problems! The notice continues: "After your identity has been verified by ID.me, DOL will automatically continue processing your claim. If you are due benefits, they will be paid to you without the need for any further action on your part. However, for some applicants, there may be other issues affecting your claim. If you have received other DOL questionnaires, please respond to them promptly. Please do not call DOL unless payment has not been issued to you within 10-14 days of your verification process with ID.me." It also says "This process replaces the need for you to mail in any documents" and mentions there's some special instructions for non-citizens where they need to send copies of their Permanent Resident Card, Temporary Resident Card, or Employment Authorization Card. Has anyone dealt with this ID.me verification before? Why would they suddenly need this after 5 months? The timing just seems really weird and I don't wanna get scammed or anything. The notice says ID.me is "a trusted, secure service used by various federal and state government agencies" and directs to https://help.id.me/hc/en-us for more info and FAQs. Anyone know if this is legit or how long it takes to get paid after doing this verification stuff? I'm worried about missing more payments while this gets sorted out.

Yeah that's totally normal. NY unemployment has been randomly selecting people for ID verification for a while now. They're trying to cut down on fraud. It's annoying but you gotta do it if you want your money. The ID.me process isn't too bad - just have your drivers license and be ready to take a selfie video. Took me about 15 mins.

Thx for the quick reply. Did your payments resume right away after you verified?

It took about 5 days for mine to start again. They said 10-14 days in the notice but it was faster for me.

After struggling for WEEKS with trying to call ny unemployment about my delayed payments, I found a service called Claimyr that actually got me through to a real person. I used their service (claimyr.com) and had a callback with an agent in less than 2 hours. Explaining my ID.me verification issue to a human got my payments back on track way faster than waiting for the automated system to process everything. Best decision I made, seriously. Check out this video if you wanna see how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Nothing sketchy about it - they just dial for you and stay on hold, then call your phone when a real person picks up. Talking to an agent got my benefits flowing again after being stuck for weeks with the ID.me thing.

I was super skeptical too but it actually worked. Was the only way I could actually talk to someone after trying for days on my own. My payments started again 2 days after talking to the agent.

wait so these people just...call for you? and it works? 🤔

Yeah that's exactly it. They have some system that dials constantly and then when they get through, they connect you. Saved me from having to sit on hold for hours myself.

I had to do this last month. Make sure you use the exact email address you registered with originally. I messed that up and it delayed my benefits another week. And yeah, it's a legitimate request - they've been ramping up identity verification because of all the fraud that happened during covid.

The ID.me thing is real but takes foreverrrr. Had to do a video call with them because their automated system couldn't verify me for whatever reason. Waited like 3 hours for an agent. Total nightmare but eventually got my money. Just make sure you have multiple forms of ID ready.

ugh that sounds awful. why did they need to do a video call? was there something wrong with your ID?

My drivers license has a small crack across it and their system couldn't read it properly. So they kicked me to a video verification. Super annoying but at least there's a backup option.

NY unemployment system is such a JOKE. They randomly flag accounts for "verification" when they want to delay payments. Been playing this game since 2020. Complete the ID.me stuff ASAP and then be prepared to wait. And SAVE THE CONFIRMATION they give you - screenshot everything!!!! 👀

💯 this right here! document EVERYTHING. I lost 3 weeks of payments because they claimed I never did the verification even tho I had

they're not purposely delaying payments, they're just understaffed and overwhelmed. I used to work for the state (not unemployment but adjacent) and trust me its not a conspiracy

Yeah right lmao whatever helps u sleep at night. They 100% throttle payments when they want to. I've seen the pattern way too many times to believe anything else 🙄

I went through this whole ID.me mess a few months ago. Here's what you need to know: - It's legitimate and you do need to complete it - Have your driver's license or passport ready - Use the EXACT email you registered your unemployment with - The selfie part can be finicky - make sure you're in good lighting - Some people get pushed to video verification if the automated system fails (which happens often) - Video verification can have long wait times (I waited 2 hours) - After verification, it can take anywhere from 3-14 days for payments to resume - If it takes longer than 14 days, you need to contact them - Screenshot EVERYTHING for your records If you can't get through on the phone (which is likely), I'd recommend trying claimyr.com - they helped me get through to an actual agent after I was stuck in verification limbo for almost 3 weeks. Worth every penny to get my benefits flowing again. Hope this helps, and good luck dealing with the NY unemployment bureaucracy!

Thank you so much for this detailed response! Really helpful. Did your back payments come through automatically?

Yes, they paid everything retroactively once my identity was verified. But it took about 10 days after verification for that to happen.

Beware this is sometimes a scam!! Check the exact URL they're sending you to. Real NY unemployment ID.me verification ONLY happens through on.ny.gov links. Anything else is a scam trying to steal your info!

The link they sent me was https://on.my.gov/IDme - is that legitimate? Now I'm worried.

That's the correct format for the official link, so you should be good. Just make sure when you click it that the page it takes you to has a secure lock icon in the browser and is on a .gov domain.

also make sure to type it in manually rather than clicking anything in an email. safest way to avoid phishing.

I work in cybersecurity. The ID.me verification is legit and actually a good thing - it's protecting your benefits from fraudsters. Identity theft for unemployment claims has been HUGE since 2020. It's annoying but necessary. And like others said, use the exact email you registered with or it'll be a whole separate headache.

This! My cousin had her identity stolen and someone was collecting benefits in her name for months before she found out. These verification steps are annoying but needed.

ok but why would they wait 5+ months to verify someone? makes no sense from a security perspective.

They do random verification checks throughout the benefit period. It's actually smart because fraudsters might think they're in the clear after initial approval. Random checks catch ongoing fraud.

Btw if u dont have a drivers license or passport u can still complete identity verification with ID.me but it's a huge pain. They'll make you upload bills with your name and address and have a video call. I went thru this and it took FOREVER ugh

if your ny unemployment says you need to verify with ID.me, you HAVE to do it or your benefits will stop completely. I ignored it thinking it was optional and they cut me off for 2 months until I figured out what happened. Don't make my mistake!

Non-citizen here. Had to do this AND mail in copies of my permanent resident card. Total pain but got through it eventually. If you're not a citizen make sure you read the fine print about additional documentation needed.

I've been on unemployment since October and had to do this twice already. It's completely random who they select for verification. The second time I couldn't get through on the phone after my payments stopped, so I used Claimyr to get a callback from an agent. Best $20 I ever spent - got all my backpay sorted in one call.

Worked for me! They call repeatedly for you and then connect you when they get through. Saved me days of frustration.

Florida's unemployment system is WAY worse! My brother lives there and had to wait 4 months for his first payment. Trust me NY is bad but not the worst.

Did anyone else have problems with ID.me facial recognition? It kept failing for me and I had to wait in a virtual queue for 5 hours to do video verification instead. Make sure you try during weekday mornings if possible - wait times are shorter then.
