NY unemployment payments stuck for over 2 weeks after successful ID.me verification - claim shows active but still pending with eviction threat looming

My cousin got hit with an ID.me verification request from NY unemployment about 3 weeks ago. She did everything they asked - uploaded her documents, took the selfie, completed the video call with the trusted referee. They confirmed her identity was verified successfully. The confirmation page from ID.me clearly showed "and ID.me and" at the top of the screen when she finished the process. She got an email confirmation that her identity was successfully verified through the ID.me system, but now it's been over 2 weeks since she completed the verification, and her payments are still not coming through. The website shows her claim is still active but nothing is being released. When she logs into the NY unemployment portal, it still shows her claim as active with all the correct information, but the payment status remains "pending" with no explanation. The strange thing is that before this ID.me verification request, she was receiving her weekly benefits of $504 without any problems for about 4 months. Anyone know why they randomly selected her for verification or why her payments haven't started again? She's called like 20 times but never gets through to a real person. She's tried calling at different times of day, early morning right when they open at 8am, late afternoon around 4pm, but either gets the "all representatives are busy" message or gets disconnected after waiting on hold for 40+ minutes. She's also sent multiple messages through the portal's messaging system but only gets automated responses saying "your inquiry has been received." Running out of options and rent is due soon. Her landlord is already threatening eviction and she's down to her last $237 in savings.

Same thing happened to me last month! They're doing random security checks because of all the fraud going around. I had to wait almost 3 weeks after doing the ID.me before my payments started again. No explanation, no updates, just suddenly the money appeared one day. The system is completely broken.

3 weeks?? That's ridiculous. Did you do anything special to make it finally go through?

Nope! Thats the crazy part. I called everyday for 2 weeks straight and suddenly one day the $ just appeared in my account with all my back pay. No explanation, nothing.

After fighting with this for weeks I finally found a service that got me through to an actual person! I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got a callback with a real agent who fixed my account in minutes. Best money I ever spent after being broke for so long. They helped me skip the whole phone queue nightmare. Here's a link that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

wait for real? sounds too good to be true...unemployment's phone system is literally designed to be impossible

I was skeptical too but I was desperate. They basically call on your behalf and wait on hold, then connect you when they get a human. Saved me hours of hold music and hangups.

Not sketchy at all - they just did what I couldn't do myself which was get through the phone system. My payments started 2 days after I talked to the agent.

The ID.me stuff is happening to EVERYONE right now. My sister, my neighbor, and me all got hit with it in the past month. They're doing a massive fraud sweep because scammers were stealing millions from the system. Even after you verify, there's another review by NYSDOL that takes forever. Try calling right when they open at 8am, that's how I finally got through.

I work in tech and ID.me is a separate company from unemployment. Sometimes there's a disconnect between their systems. Even after you verify with ID.me, the unemployment system has to receive and process that verification, which can take time depending on their backlog. Your friend's case might be stuck in that limbo.

Yep, ny unemployment's database and ID.me don't sync automatically. I had to call and tell them I completed the verification before they'd release my $..

That's helpful info - I'll let her know she might need to keep pushing them about it rather than just waiting

CALL THEM EVERY DAY!!! The squeaky wheel gets the grease with these people! Don't give up! I was in the EXACT same situation and finally got through after 2 weeks of calling constantly. Ask for a tier 2 specialist when you get someone on the phone. Most of the frontline people can't help with ID verification issues.

this is the real answer. they count on people giving up. same for any govt agency tbh

Pro tip: ID.me verification problems are SUPER COMMON now with NY unemployment. Here's what worked for me and several friends: - Make sure you've completed BOTH parts of ID.me (the automated part AND the video call if required) - After verification, send a direct message through your online account saying "ID.me verification complete - please release payments" - Call the office at exactly 7:58am (2 mins before opening) - Ask specifically for the "identity verification department" - Be prepared to wait 1-2 weeks even after verification - Check your spam folder for any additional requests One service that ACTUALLY helped me get through when nothing else worked was Claimyr (claimyr.com). They got me a callback with a real agent after I spent weeks trying on my own. The agent told me there was a flag on my account that needed to be manually removed EVEN AFTER the ID.me verification was complete. Don't give up! The system is designed to be frustrating but persistence pays off!

Thank you for this detailed breakdown, really helpful. Did you have to pay anything for the Claimyr service?

Yes there is a fee but after weeks of no benefits it was worth every penny to finally get my backpay which was over $2000 by that point. The agent fixed my issue in literally 5 minutes once I got through.

They're targeting accounts with certain patterns. If she changed addresses recently, has a different IP address than usual when certifying, or made any mistakes on weekly certifications, they might flag for verification. My account got flagged because my ex-roommate was also on unemployment with the same address.

She did move about 2 months ago, so maybe that triggered something. Makes sense.

lmaoooooo welcome to the NYSDOL circus 馃ぁ where they make you jump through hoops while you can't pay your bills. took me 7 weeks to get paid after ID.me. good luck!

Try contacting your state representative or senator's office!! They have direct lines to unemployment office. I was stuck for MONTHS until I did this. My rep's office called me back the next day, and my issue was fixed within 48 hours. Don't waste time with the regular customer service.

Did your friend change any banking info recently? That automatically triggers a security hold and ID verification. Even after verification is complete, there's a secondary review that can take 10-14 business days. It's stupid but that's how the system works now.

She hasn't changed banking info, but that's good to know for anyone else having this issue!

File a complaint with the DOL ombudsman. Google "ny unemployment ombudsman" and you'll find the form. This got my case unstuck after weeks of nothing happening. They're required to respond within 3 business days.

You have to be super specific in your complaint. Mention exact dates, confirmation numbers, and use phrases like "financial hardship" and "immediate assistance required"

Has she tried Twitter? I'm not even kidding. I publicly tweeted at NYSDOL with my issue (no personal info) and got a DM asking for my details within an hour. Had my payments 3 days later. The public shame route sometimes works when nothing else does.

This same exact thing happened to me! Had to verify with id.me and then crickets for weeks. I finally got throgh on the phone using claimyr.com and the agent told me there was a SECOND verification that happens internally after id.me is done. Apparently they don't tell anyone about this part! The agent had to manually clear my account. Got paid 2 days later with all my backpay.

wait so even after you do the whole ID.me thing they still make you wait?? The system is rigged to make people give up 馃槨

Yep! The ID.me just verifies you are who you say you are. Then NY unemployment has to review everything AGAIN on their end. Makes zero sense.

check if she answered ANY certification questions differently in the past few weeks. My payments got held up because I accidentally said I was "unavailable for work" on ONE day when I had a doctor's appointment. That triggered a review that took 3 weeks to clear up.

I know this is annoying but id.me is actually helping reduce the massive fraud happening with unemployment. Something like $2 billion was stolen from NY unemployment alone during the pandemic. But yeah they should definitely speed up the process after verification. It's not fair to make people wait weeks for their money.

Not an unemployment worker, just stating facts. I went through this too and it sucked, but I understand why they're being careful.
