Got rejection letter but NY unemployment still asking me to verify IDme?

Super confused right now. I applied for unemployment in August after getting let go from my retail position. Last week I received what looks like a rejection letter saying I don't qualify based on my previous earnings (they calculated about $5,600 when apparently you need like $7,200 or something). I was disappointed but ready to move on and find another job. Then today I check my mail and there's TWO separate letters from NY unemployment both telling me I need to verify my identity through IDme before my claim can be processed. One letter is dated Sept 17 and the other Sept 19. Why would they ask me to verify my identity if they already rejected my claim? Is this just their system being slow and the letters crossed in the mail? Or should I still do the IDme thing because maybe they're reconsidering my claim? I've tried calling their number but the wait times are insane. Has anyone else experienced this weird situation?

Yep happened to my cousin last month. The system is totally broken. He got a denial letter but then got instructions to certify weekly. He ended up being approved after verifying IDme. Do the verification ASAP – its probly just different departments not talking to each other.

So you think I should still do the IDme thing even though I got the rejection? The whole thing is so confusing.

Definatley do the IDme. The monetary determination isnt always final. Sometimes they have wrong info and IDme helps them correct it.

I second this. The rejection might just be automatic cuz they dont have all ur info yet. They did similar to me last spring.

After banging my head against the wall for weeks with similar issues, I finally found a service that got me through to an actual human at unemployment. Used claimyr.com and they called and waited on hold for me, then connected me to an agent who fixed everything in like 10 minutes. Talking to a real person got my money flowing again so fast. Wish I'd known about it sooner! Check out their process here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

This looks interesting but does it actually work? I've tried so many things already and I'm tired of getting my hopes up 😩

Yeah it worked for me! They just call and wait on hold so you don't have to. When they get someone they connect you. Saved me literally hours of my life and the agent I talked to fixed my issue instantly.

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

Chris King

No catch, it just saves you from waiting on hold forever. They don't need any personal info or account details - they just do the waiting part and connect you when a rep answers. I was skeptical too but it worked.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? the unemployment line has me ready to throw my phone out the window

It worked for me! All they do is call and wait on hold, then when a real person answers, they connect you to the call. No BS, they don't ask for any personal info or anything.

The contradictory letters are a feature, not a bug lol. NY unemployment is a total mess right now. But seriously - do the IDme verification anyway. The monetary determination is just one part, and sometimes they recalculate it later.

Two different departments. The monetary determination is automatic based on reported wages. The ID verification is a separate step in the process. DEFINITELY complete the IDme - if you don't, you'll never get anywhere even if they later determine you're eligible. And trust me, appeal the monetary determination if you think they have your wages wrong. I had to submit paystubs to prove they were missing some of my income.

How do I appeal the monetary determination? Is there a specific form?

You need to call them and tell them ur appealing. Bring any pay stubs or W2s that show ur correct earnings. The NYS DOL website has the form under 'forms and publications' but honestly u need to talk to someone to get it processed right.

I went through this exact thing in July!!! The system is bonkers but heres what happened to me: they sent rejection letter, then IDme request, I did the verification anyway, then got ANOTHER letter saying I was approved after all. Try calling but good luck getting through 🤦‍♀️

That gives me hope! So you did end up getting benefits even after the initial rejection?

0 coins

Angelica Smith

Yep! They recalculated my base period or whatever they call it. Turns out they were missing some income from a part-time job I had. The rejection was based on incomplete info.

Listen carefully: COMPLETE THE IDME VERIFICATION NO MATTER WHAT. Here's why: 1. Different departments send different letters and they don't coordinate well 2. The monetary determination is preliminary and can be revised 3. If you don't complete identity verification, your claim is dead in the water anyway 4. They might have incomplete wage information and could recalculate 5. Even if this claim doesn't work out, having IDme verification done will help with any future claims I've been through the ny unemployment system three times in the past few years and it's always a maze. The best way to get actual answers is to speak with a live agent. If you can't get through on the phone (which is likely), I had success with claimyr.com - they wait on hold and connect you when an agent picks up. Worth every penny because talking to a real person is the ONLY way to sort out these contradictory letters. Also, keep certifying weekly even if you think you're denied. The system is so backlogged that sometimes approvals come weeks later and you won't get paid for weeks you didn't certify.

Thank you for such a detailed answer! This is really helpful. I guess I'll do the IDme verification today and keep trying to reach someone on the phone.

The rejection could be for one type of benefit but you might qualify for another. Do the ID verification!!

100% this is normal for NY unemployment. I got 3 different letters in 2 days all saying completely different things. One said I was approved, one said I needed more verification, and one said my claim was pending. So confusing.

Jeremiah Brown

What did you end up doing? Did it get sorted out?

Caleb Stark

Eventually yeah. I did all the verifications they asked for and kept calling until I finally got through to someone who explained everything. Took about 3 weeks total.

Anyone notice that the unemployment site is ALWAYS under maintenance whenever you actually need to use it? It's like they purposely make it impossible to get help 🤬

Omg for real! Always down between midnight and 7am when I'm actually free to deal with this stuff!

It's by design. They don't want to pay people lol

Is the monetary determination letter an actual rejection or just telling you what your benefit amount would be? Sometimes people confuse the two. The monetary determination just shows your potential weekly benefit amount based on past earnings. It's not necessarily a denial unless it specifically says you're denied.

0 coins

-

Jeremiah Brown

It says "You do not qualify for benefits at this time based on the earnings in your base period." Then shows my calculated earnings ($5,642) and says it's below the required threshold.

Andrew Pinnock

Ok that is a denial BUT they might be missing some of your wages. Definitely do the IDme and then call to see if you can have your wages reconsidered. Sometimes employers don't report everything correctly.

check if you qualify for partial benefits. even with low previous earning you might be eligible for something. the IDme is probably still needed either way

I literally spent TWO MONTHS trying to sort out similar contradictory messages until I finally decided to use claimyr.com to get through to an agent. The guy I talked to fixed everything in like 5 minutes and told me the system often sends automated letters that contradict each other. Got my backpay the next week!

not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these never work

0 coins

-

24d

Alexis Renard

It's not a hack lol. They just wait on hold for you. I was on hold for 4+ hours multiple times before I found them. They just do the waiting part so you don't have to.

So this claimyr thing actually works? Do they need access to your account or anything?

0 coins

-

24d

Alexis Renard

Nope, they don't need any access to your account or personal info! They just call the unemployment line, wait on hold, and then connect you once a human picks up. That's it! It's basically just a hold-waiting service.

I'd verify my identity through IDme ASAP. Better to have all bases covered, even if the initial determination was negative. You can always appeal the monetary determination if you think they missed some of your wages.

WAIT WAIT WAIT - what quarter did they use for your base period? This happened to me and turned out they were using the wrong quarter. If you worked more in earlier quarters, request a recalculation using the alternate base period!

0 coins

-

Jeremiah Brown

They used April 2022-March 2023 as my base period. I did work more in 2021 but I don't think that would count?

0 coins

-

Max Knight

Actually it might! Ask them about the alternate base period. Sometimes they can use different quarters depending on your work history. Definitely worth asking about!

This is correct!! I had the same issue and when they used my alternate base period I qualified! DEFINITELY ask about this!!

The NY unemployment system is still broken AF from the pandemic overload. Never seen such a mess. I got 5 different contradicting letters in a 2 week period last time I applied.

just had almost this exact situation. do the idme verification and then CALL THEM. you probly need to talk to a tier 2 specialist. the idme is required regardless of approval status

Jeremiah Brown

Thanks, I'm definitely going to do the IDme verification today. But calling them is so hard - been on hold for hours with no luck.

Try claimyr.com - they called for me after I spent literal days trying to get through. Worth every penny to not waste hours on hold.
