NY unemployment sent me forms in mail but website down - where do I send completed paperwork?

Got laid off from my retail job in November and filed for unemployment right away. Got approved in December and was receiving payments fine until 2 weeks ago when everything suddenly stopped. Then yesterday I got this stack of paperwork in the mail saying I need to verify my identity because of "suspicious activity" on my account. Tried logging into the unemployment website to upload the forms but the site keeps timing out or giving me error messages. The paperwork doesn't clearly say where to send the completed forms back to. There's a fax number but I don't have a fax machine. Can I just mail these forms to the return address on the envelope? Has anyone dealt with this verification stuff before? Really stressed because my rent is due soon and I need these payments to resume.

I had the same thing happen last month! The papers should have a mailing address somewhere on them - check the very bottom of each page or the back. If not, yes you can use the return address on the envelope. Make sure you keep copies of EVERYTHING you send them (take pictures with your phone). And call them to confirm they received your documents after you mail them.

Thanks for the help! I checked again and found a tiny PO Box address at the bottom of page 3 in super small print. Definitely gonna make copies before sending.

True that! I finally got through after like 50 attempts. But also make sure to check your online message inbox once the website is working again - sometimes they just send notices there without telling you.

I was stuck in the same situation with identity verification forms and the website being down. After days of frustration, I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got a callback with an actual agent on the phone! Talking to a real person solved my issue and my benefits started again within days. It was the best decision I made after spinning my wheels for weeks. Here's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

is this for real? how does that even work? sounds too good to be true tbh

Yes it actually works! They basically call for you and wait on hold, then connect you when they get a real person. Saved me hours of frustration and my claim got fixed same day

another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄 these things never work

No catch - it just works. I was skeptical too but was desperate after 3 weeks with no progress. Worth every penny when my backpay hit my account 2 days later!

I just checked out that site and it makes sense. They basically automate the hold process. Smart idea actually. Might try it tomorrow if I can't get through

whatever you do, DONT USE THE FAX NUMBER! It goes to some black hole. I sent my forms there twice and they claimed they never got them. Wasted 3 weeks of benefits because of that mistake.

Make COPIES of everything before you send it! NY unemployment is notorious for losing documents. I learned this the hard way when they claimed they never received my identity docs and I had no proof I sent them.

Good call - definitely making copies of everything. This whole process is so stressful!

And take pics of the envelope with postage before you mail it! I even got tracking on mine

I've been dealing with ny unemployment for over 10 years on and off (seasonal worker). Here's what you need to know: First, ALWAYS make a copy of ALL documents you send them. Their system is a mess and things get lost constantly. Second, you CAN mail forms to the return address, but use certified mail with tracking so you have proof they received it. Third, if you need to talk to someone RIGHT NOW, use claimyr.com - it's the only reliable way to get through to an agent. They call for you and connect you when someone answers. I was skeptical at first but it saved my sanity and got my issue resolved in one day instead of weeks. Fourth, check your online account daily once it's working - they often send messages there that they never tell you about. Fifth, if your claim has been flagged for identity verification, it usually takes 2-3 weeks after they receive your documents for payments to resume. They're extremely backed up right now. Hope this helps!

This is SUPER helpful, thank you so much! Gonna check out that claimyr site today because I really need to talk to someone.

As someone who works in gov (not unemployment), I can confirm the advice about certified mail. We're required to scan and document all certified mail on arrival.

You should mail it to the address on the forms not the return address on envelope. Make sure to include your claim ID number on EVERY page. I work at the post office and see these forms come through all the time. People forget to put their claim number and then complain when nothing happens lol.

Omg thank you for pointing this out! I almost sent it without adding my claim number to each page!

The website goes down ALL THE TIME 😡 It's like they don't want us to get paid. I've had better luck logging in super early (like 6am) or late at night after 11pm when fewer people are trying to access it.

This! The site works best between 2-5am which is ridiculous. Who designs a system that can't handle normal traffic?!

Not surprised tbh. The whole system runs on technology from like 1995

So many people are getting these identity verification forms lately. I think there was some kind of data breach they're not telling us about. My friend and I both got these forms within days of each other last month.

You might be onto something. I heard rumors about a big fraud ring that was hitting NY unemployment and they're now making everyone verify.

hey quick question - does the form have a barcode at the top? if yes, you NEED to mail it to the Albany processing center. if not, you can use the PO Box listed on the paper. had the same issue in February and almost sent it to the wrong place.

It does have a barcode! Thank you for this - I wouldn't have known to send it to Albany.

Glad I could help! The barcode forms go to a different scanning center where they process them into the system. The address is: NYSDOL Document Control Center 207 Genesee St Albany, NY 13210

When this happened to me I got so fed up with the website that I just drove to the local unemployment office and handed the forms in person. They gave me a receipt and my benefits started again the next week.

Just a heads up - fill out the forms in BLACK INK ONLY. I used blue pen and they rejected them and sent new forms. Wasted 3 weeks of payments because of that stupid rule that isn't written anywhere on the forms.

Omg thank you!!! I was literally about to use a blue pen! This probably saved me weeks of hassle.

I just went through this last week! After trying to call 30+ times, I used Claimyr.com and they actually got me through to an agent who told me where to send the forms AND flagged my account so it would be processed faster! My benefits restarted this week. Worth checking out if you're stuck.

Thank you! I'm gonna try this today. Did they explain why the website keeps crashing?

The agent told me they're doing system updates that keep taking the site down, especially during high traffic times. She recommended trying between 11pm-5am if possible.

The ny unemployment system is such garbage. took me 6 months to get my claim sorted last year when the EXACT SAME THING happened to me. I feel ur pain OP

Not to freak you out, but I got those same forms because someone was trying to commit fraud with my identity. If you also got a letter saying your banking info was changed, you need to report it as fraud immediately by calling their fraud hotline!

-

StarSailor

I didn't get a letter about banking changes, just the identity verification forms. Is there anything else I should look for that might indicate fraud?

If you got an email about accessing your account from a new device or browser that wasn't you, that's another sign. Also check if your address was changed in the system once you can log in again.

don't bother with the mail lol... it'll take forever 😫 Either get through on the phone or find an actual office to drop off the forms. Phone is faster if you can get thru
