NY unemployment payments suddenly stopped - what's this ID.me thing everyone's talking about?
So I've been collecting unemployment since November after being let go from my retail job. Everything was going fine - payments coming in regularly every Tuesday until suddenly three weeks ago they just stopped. No warning, no explanation. Checked my account and it says I need to verify my identity through something called ID.me? Never heard of this before. Apparently lots of other people having the same issue based on what I'm seeing on Twitter. Can someone explain what ID.me is and how to complete this verification process? The NY unemployment website is so confusing and when I try calling I just get stuck in this endless loop of automated messages. Really need this sorted ASAP since rent is due next week and I'm already behind on bills. This is beyond frustrating.

Yep I went thru this last month. It's a pain but basically it's a identity verification system to prevent fraud. Lot of scammers been claiming benefits using stolen identities so now we all gotta jump thru hoops. Go to id.me website, create account, verify ur identity with docs (drivers license, passport etc) and sometimes video chat. Then link it to ur unemployment account. Takes like 30-45 mins if everything goes smooth.

After spending DAYS trying to get through to someone about this same issue, I finally found a service that actually worked. Used claimyr.com and they got me connected to a live agent in less than an hour! Talking to an agent got my payments unlocked so fast. Seriously saved me when I was about to lose my apartment. Check out how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•sounds too good to be true. how does it actually work? the ny unemployment phone system is like fort knox

•It basically calls for you and stays on hold, then rings your phone when it gets a real person. saved me hours of hold music. was skeptical too but it worked!

•no catch, it just works. I was in the same boat as you - thought nothing would help after weeks of trying. was literally the only way I could finally talk to someone who fixed my claim

•hmm I've been burned by so many of these services before... what makes this different?

•it actually connects you with a real NY unemployment agent, not some third party help desk. the difference is you actually get your issue fixed by someone who can help

ID.me is a massive headache! Had to try 5 times before the video verification worked. Make sure your internet connection is super stable and lightning is good. And don't try on weekends - their wait times are INSANE (like 4+ hours). Do it on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning if possible.

Listen everyone needs to RELAX about ID.me - yes its annoying but its actually protecting us. My cousin had someone file using his info last year and it was a nightmare to fix. Better to verify once than deal with fraud. Just follow instructions carefully and youll be fine.

Here's a COMPLETE GUIDE to getting through ID.me verification for NY unemployment benefits: First, you need to understand WHY this is happening. There's been massive fraud in the system with criminals filing claims using stolen identities. ID.me is a third-party identity verification service that helps confirm you are who you say you are. Here's what you'll need: 1. Email address (to create ID.me account) 2. Social Security Number 3. Photo ID (driver's license, passport, state ID) 4. Smartphone or computer with camera 5. Phone number for verification codes Step-by-step process: - Go to ID.me website and create an account - Choose to verify for "Unemployment Insurance" - Enter your SSN and upload photos of your ID - Take a selfie that they'll match to your ID photo - Confirm your phone number to receive verification codes - Sometimes you'll need to do a video call with a "trusted referee" if automated verification fails After you complete ID.me verification, your unemployment benefits should resume within 3-14 days depending on your specific situation. If you're still having trouble getting through to someone at NY unemployment to resolve issues, I've had great success using claimyr.com - it gets you past the phone queue and connected to an actual representative who can help. Best money I ever spent considering how much was at stake with my benefits. Hang in there everyone - this system is frustrating but persistence pays off!

•Thank you sooo much for the detailed breakdown. Quick question - does the video call require scheduling or is it immediate?

•@OP it's immediate but there's usually a wait time. Can be anywhere from 15 mins to several hours depending on when you try. Early mornings on weekdays are best.

For those struggling with ID.me verification, there's also an option to use their app instead of the website. Sometimes it works better especially if the website keeps timing out.

•The app is def more reliable. Website kept crashing on me but app worked first try

Am I the only one who thinks its creepy that we have to do all this facial recognition and video call stuff just to get our benefits? Feels like some dystopian nightmare tbh.

NY unemployment system is such a joke. Every state doing something different. My sister in NJ went thru none of this BS 🤦♂️

•Different states have different fraud levels. NY got hit particularly hard with identity fraud claims.

IMPORTANT TIP: when doing ID.me make sure your name EXACTLY matches what's on your unemployment claim. My middle initial caused issues because it was on my license but not my claim.

Word of warning from someone who messed up: When uploading your drivers license to ID.me make ABSOLUTELY SURE the image is clear and all four corners are visible. I had to restart the whole process because my thumb was covering part of the license in the photo 🤦♀️
