Do I need to do ID.me before applying for NY unemployment benefits?
I just got laid off from my accounting job last week due to budget cuts. Starting to look at filing for unemployment benefits in New York but I'm confused about this ID.me thing. Do I need to complete the ID.me verification first before I can even create my unemployment account? Or is that something that comes later in the process? I tried calling the hotline but after waiting for 2 hours yesterday I had to hang up for another appointment. The website isn't clear about the exact order of steps. Has anyone gone through this recently who can explain the correct sequence? Really need to get this sorted ASAP as I've got rent due in 3 weeks.

Yeah, you need to do ID.me first. It's part of their security process to prevent fraud. It's pretty straightforward - upload your ID, take a selfie video, answer some questions about your credit history. Takes maybe 20 minutes if everything goes smooth. Do that first, then you can create your actual unemployment account.

•Thanks for the quick answer! Did you have any issues with the selfie part? I've heard some people have lighting problems.

•Make sure you're in a well-lit room with no shadows on your face. And remove glasses if you wear them. I had to try 3 times cause my room was too dark.

•It can be finicky as hell. I had to restart the whole process twice because the video verification kept timing out. Super annoying but stick with it

I was in the same situation last month trying to apply. After days of trying to reach someone on the phone with no luck, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual person at unemployment. They held my place in line and called me when they reached an agent. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast, totally worth checking out: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? the unemployment phone system is literal hell

•It worked for me! I was skeptical too but was desperate after wasting days on hold. They just hold your spot in line and call you when they get a human. Saved me like 3 hours of hold music 🙌

•yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

•No catch - they just do the waiting for you. My issue was solved in like 10 mins once I actually talked to someone. Before that I was just stuck in bureaucratic limbo

•not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these never work

•I get the skepticism. The system is so broken it's hard to believe anything helps. But this is just a waiting service, not a miracle cure. They just saved me from the hold music hell.

The order depends on how you're applying. If you're doing everything online, then yes, you'll need to do ID.me first. But if you call in to file (good luck with that lol), sometimes they can start your claim and then you do ID.me afterwards. The system is a mess and different people get different instructions.

The whole ID.me process is GARBAGE. It took me 6 attempts because their facial recognition software kept failing. Then I had to do a video call with a "trusted referee" which had a 5 HOUR wait time. 😡 But yeah, unfortunately you have to do it first before you can access your benefits.

•THIS!! Their system is such trash. I waited 3 hours for the video call and then got disconnected. Had to start all over again.

•Same thing happened to my brother! He ended up having to use his wife's phone because his kept failing the verification for some reason

I went through the whole process in february. Here's the exact order: 1. Create a NY.gov ID account 2. Complete ID.me verification (have your drivers license/state ID and SSN ready) 3. After ID.me verification is successful, you can access the unemployment application 4. Complete the application (takes about 30-45 minutes) 5. Submit weekly certifications after your claim is approved The ID.me part is definitely required before you can fully access the system. It's annoying but they implemented it to stop all the fraud happening during the pandemic. One tip: if the automated ID.me verification fails, don't panic - you'll just need to do a video call with a person to verify. Have all your documents handy. If you run into issues, getting someone on the phone is nearly impossible through normal channels. I used claimyr.com after 3 days of failed calling attempts. They connected me to an agent who fixed my issue in minutes. Several people in this sub have had success with them too. Good luck! The process is frustrating but you'll get through it.

•Thank you SO much for the detailed breakdown! This is exactly what I needed. Did you have to wait long between completing the ID.me part and being able to submit your application?

•No problem! Once ID.me approved me, I could immediately access the application. The whole process took about 2 hours from start to finish. But then it was 3 weeks before I saw my first payment.

•This is super helpful but just FYI they changed something in the process recently. My friend just applied and had to upload more documents than I did back in January.

Anyone else think its ridiculous we have to go through a third party identity verification company just to access our state benefits that we already paid into? 🤔 The whole NY unemployment system is a joke.

•Supposedly it's to prevent fraud but feels like another barrier to make it harder to claim benefits tbh

•100% agree. I had to help my mom with it and she's not tech savvy at all. Impossible for older people to navigate without help.

•Yeah but remember all that unemployment fraud during the pandemic? Like billions of dollars stolen. That's why they added this extra step.

•They could have just improved their own verification system instead of outsourcing it. Our tax $ at work! 🙄

I skipped the ID.me part initially and it came back to bite me later. Got stuck in pending for 6 weeks because of it. Definitely do it upfront.

Quick tip: if ID.me keeps failing the facial recognition, try using a different device. My laptop camera didn't work but my phone went through right away.

•this! their facial recognition software hates certain cameras for some reason

•And make sure you remove glasses, hats, etc. Even subtle things like being in a dark room can mess it up.

Unrelated but make sure you answer all their questions consistently. I got flagged for an interview because I accidentally put different dates on two parts of the application. Took 4 extra weeks to resolve. The system looks for any excuse to delay benefits.

Check out this official page from NYSDOL that explains the order of steps: https://dol.ny.gov/unemployment/file-your-first-claim-benefits - it specifically mentions ID.me as a required first step

After struggling with ID.me for days (kept getting errors about my documents), I finally got through by using the video call option with a live representative. Waited about 2 hours but at least it worked. If the automated system gives you problems, definitely use the video call option.

•How did you access the video call option? I can't find it anywhere on their site

•It should automatically offer you the video call option after 2-3 failed attempts with the automated system. At least that's how it worked for me back in March.
