NY unemployment payments delayed because of ID.me verification - totally confused

I'm so frustrated right now. I've been claiming weekly NY unemployment benefits for the past 3 weeks but haven't received any payments. When I checked my account status it says I need to complete ID.me verification but I don't understand how to do it! The instructions are so confusing and when I tried to upload my license the system kept timing out. Is this why my payments are delayed? Has anyone else dealt with this ID.me stuff? I'm about to be late on rent and have no idea what I'm doing wrong. The hotline just puts me on hold forever then disconnects.

yeah the ID.me thing is a HUGE pain. It took me like 3 tries to get it to work. Make sure ur using Chrome or Firefox NOT Safari. Also the pic of ur license has to be super clear lighting. Don't take a pic of it on a dark surface.

Thanks for responding! I've been using my phone to try to do everything. Should I be using a computer instead? The camera on my laptop is terrible though.

ID.me verification is definitely required before they'll release any payments in 2025. It's a security measure to prevent fraud. Here's what you need to do step by step: 1. Go to id.me/nysdol (use this exact link) 2. Create an ID.me account if you don't already have one 3. Have your driver's license or state ID ready 4. Have access to your email and phone for verification codes 5. You may need to do a video call verification if the automated system can't verify you Yes, this is 100% why your payments are being held up. Once you complete this successfully, your payments should be processed within 3-5 business days.

Thank you for the detailed steps! I tried going to that link but when I get to the part where I need to upload my documents, it just spins forever. Do you know if there's a specific file size limit?

the ID.me thing is basicly impossible!! i tried TWELVE times before it worked. the trick is u need perfect lighting, white background, and NO shadows on ur license. also make sure ur using the latest version of whatever browser ur on. its so stupid they make us jump thru all these hoops

Same experience here. 😩 Spent 3 days trying to get verified and kept getting errors about 'unable to verify identity' over and over! Finally got it to work at like 2am when their servers weren't busy.

Have you tried calling the dedicated ID.me support line instead of the regular unemployment line? They have specialists who can help walk you through the verification process. The number should be listed on the verification page. Also, the file size limit for document uploads is 10MB and they only accept JPG, PNG, or PDF formats. Common errors happen when people try to upload files that are too large or in the wrong format.

I didn't even know there was a dedicated ID.me support line! I'll look for that number. I've been taking the photos with my phone camera so they might be too large. I'll try to resize them. Thank you!

I went through this nightmare last month. Kept trying to upload my documents and nothing happened. Turns out there was a glitch with certain internet connections. I tried using my phone's hotspot instead of my home wifi and it worked immediately! Also, I found out I was using my full legal name on the application but my ID only had my middle initial - that was causing verification problems too.

This!!! The name matching is super important. I had to start over because my DL has my maiden name but I was filing under married name.

After struggling with ID.me for days, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual NYSDOL agent who fixed my verification issues in minutes. They have this video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE. It was seriously worth it because the agent was able to override something in my account that was blocking the verification from going through. Saved me weeks of delays.

I've never heard of Claimyr before. Does it actually work? I'm desperate at this point since rent is due next week.

Yeah it does work! The agent I got connected with could see exactly what was wrong with my ID.me verification and fixed it on their end. I got my payments 2 days later. The video explains it better than I can.

btw if u do the id.me video call verification option, the wait times are INSANE right now. i waited 4 hours yesterday!!! make sure u have ur phone charged and dont refresh or u lose ur place in line

4 HOURS?! That's ridiculous! I don't even have the patience to wait that long.

One other thing I recommend - take screenshots of every step of the ID.me process as you complete it. Many people have had issues where the system says they didn't complete verification even though they did. Having screenshots proves you completed the process if you need to dispute it later. Make sure the timestamps are visible in your screenshots.

That's really smart advice. I'll definitely start taking screenshots. I've been so stressed about this whole thing.

just keep trying different browsers!!! i couldnt get it to work on chrome but it worked first try on microsoft edge for some reason!!!!! also make sure ur not on vpn

Update from my earlier comment - the NYSDOL recently published a troubleshooting guide for ID.me verification. The most common issues are: 1. Name mismatch between ID and NYSDOL account 2. Using an unsupported browser (Edge and Chrome work best) 3. Poor photo quality of documents 4. Network connection issues 5. Verification timing out due to high volume If you've tried multiple times and still can't get through, you might need to request manual verification, which requires speaking with an agent directly.

Thank you for this update! I think my problem might be #3 - poor photo quality. I'm going to try scanning my license instead of taking a photo.

UPDATE: I finally got the ID.me verification to work! I used Chrome on my laptop instead of my phone, made sure I was in a brightly lit room, and took a super clear photo of my license against a white background. The trick was making sure the text was completely readable and there was no glare. Now it says my verification is pending review. How long does that usually take before payments start coming through?

Great news! The pending review typically takes 1-3 business days. Once approved, your held payments should be released within another 2-3 business days. So you're looking at about a week total before you see the money in your account. Make sure you keep certifying each week while you wait!

congrats!! mine took exactly 5 days to process after the pending review and then i got all my backpay at once

Has anyone else noticed that sometimes the ID.me system says you're verified but NYSDOL still shows you need verification? That happened to me and I had to contact ID.me support to have them manually push the verification status to NYSDOL. Just something to watch out for...

0 coins

Oh no, that's good to know. I'll keep checking my NYSDOL account to make sure the verification status updates properly. This whole system is so frustrating!

One final tip - after your ID.me verification is complete, check your message inbox in your NYSDOL account. They'll usually send a confirmation that your identity has been verified and when you can expect payments. If you don't see that message within 5 business days of completing verification, that's when you should follow up.

Thank you! I'll keep an eye on my inbox. I really appreciate everyone's help with this!

I went through this exact same nightmare about 2 months ago! The ID.me verification definitely holds up ALL your payments until it's complete. A few things that helped me get through it: 1. Clear your browser cache completely before starting 2. Make sure you're not using any ad blockers or extensions that might interfere 3. Try doing it during off-peak hours (like early morning or late evening) when fewer people are using the system 4. If you have an old phone, the camera quality might not be good enough - I had to borrow my friend's newer phone to get a clear enough photo The whole process is a pain but once it's done, you should get all your back payments in one lump sum. Don't give up! And definitely keep certifying your weekly claims even while you're waiting for verification to complete.

Thanks for all the helpful tips! The browser cache clearing tip is something I hadn't thought of - I'll definitely try that. I've been using my older iPhone which might explain why my photos keep getting rejected. I'll see if I can borrow a friend's phone with a better camera. It's reassuring to hear that you got all your back payments in one lump sum once it was resolved. Did you have to wait long after the verification was approved before the payments actually hit your account?

I'm dealing with the exact same issue right now! Been waiting 2 weeks for my payments and just found out it's because of this ID.me verification requirement. The system keeps crashing when I try to upload my documents too. Reading through all these comments is actually really helpful - I had no idea about the file size limits or using different browsers. Going to try the Chrome + white background + good lighting combo that seems to work for people. It's so stressful when you need the money for basic expenses like rent! Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences and tips.
