Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. Identity theft on my NY unemployment account - no payments for 9 months

I've been dealing with a nightmare since May. Someone hacked my unemployment account and received a payment that was meant for me around May 18th. I reported it immediately but haven't seen a single dollar since May 5th. That's over 9 months with zero payments! I lost my job again in December and filed a new claim, but still nothing. I call every single week - today I started at 6:30am and when 8:00 hit, all I got was 'call volume too high' messages before getting disconnected. My benefit year is about to expire next month and I'm completely out of options. I've had several job interviews but nothing solid yet. I just want the back payments I'm legally entitled to. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to a human being there?

I filed a complaint with the State Department of Financial Services and that actually got results when nothing else worked. They handle financial fraud cases and can put pressure on DOL. heres the link: https://www.dfs.ny.gov/complaint

honestly bro u might be better off just focusin on finding work at this point. The system is FUBAR and even if u do get thru it could be months before u see $$$. Not tryin to be negative but thats the reality with how bad ny unemployment is rn.

Stuck waiting for ny unemployment back pay for 8 weeks - anyone seen this error?

So frustrated with the system right now. I got laid off in August when my company downsized and I applied for benefits immediately. I was approved after about 3 weeks but there was some weird glitch where they didn't process my first 6 weeks properly. When I check my payment history, those weeks show as 'pending backdate review' with a weird error code. I've been trying to get this resolved since October and it's now December - that's over $2,800 that I'm owed! I've called at least 20 times but can never get through to a real person. The automated system just tells me my claim is 'under review' and to wait. Has anyone else dealt with this 'pending backdate review' status and actually gotten their back pay? I'm about to miss another rent payment and I'm getting desperate.

yeah man welcome to the club 🤦‍♂️ this happened to me too. tried calling for weeks and getting the same bs automated message saying my claim was under review. Then I saw someone recommend claimyr.com on here, used it and finally got a real person. She told me my account had a fraud flag on it (even though I did nothing wrong) and that's why my backpay was stuck in review. She removed the flag while I was on the phone with her and my money showed up 3 days later. talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast.

apparently their system automatically flags certain claims if anything looks 'unusual' - in my case it was because I moved during the claim period. but the agent said it happens all the time for stupid reasons and most are false flags

I have a theory that they do this on purpose to save money. If you make the process painful enough, some percentage of people will just give up. I waited 15 weeks for my backdated payments and had to threaten legal action before they finally processed it. The system is working exactly as designed - to be frustrating.

Filed for ny unemployment in mid-October and sent back forms but still no update while my brother got approved already

I applied for unemployment the second week of October and got a packet with forms to fill out about 8 days later. I filled everything out immediately and mailed it back the very next day. I've been faithfully certifying every week since then, but my account still shows pending. Meanwhile, my brother filed just 3 days before me and already got a text message and email last week saying he was approved! I haven't received any communication whatsoever - no texts, no emails, nothing. I've tried calling all the phone numbers multiple times but can never get through to an actual person. Just automated messages and then disconnected. It's been over a month now with zero updates. I'm getting really frustrated and bills are piling up. Has anyone else experienced this delay? What could be causing this and what should I do?

Keep an eye on your mailbox. Sometimes they send physical letters requesting additional information even when they have your email and phone number. Miss that letter and your claim sits in limbo. Also, check your spam folder daily!

Do I need to do ID.me before applying for NY unemployment benefits?

I just got laid off from my accounting job last week due to budget cuts. Starting to look at filing for unemployment benefits in New York but I'm confused about this ID.me thing. Do I need to complete the ID.me verification first before I can even create my unemployment account? Or is that something that comes later in the process? I tried calling the hotline but after waiting for 2 hours yesterday I had to hang up for another appointment. The website isn't clear about the exact order of steps. Has anyone gone through this recently who can explain the correct sequence? Really need to get this sorted ASAP as I've got rent due in 3 weeks.

After struggling with ID.me for days (kept getting errors about my documents), I finally got through by using the video call option with a live representative. Waited about 2 hours but at least it worked. If the automated system gives you problems, definitely use the video call option.

It should automatically offer you the video call option after 2-3 failed attempts with the automated system. At least that's how it worked for me back in March.

NY unemployment tax withholding suddenly started - how to stop it?

Recently noticed my unemployment payments have decreased by about $60. After checking my payment history, I realized taxes are now being withheld which wasn't happening before. I never changed any settings or requested this! Been getting benefits since April after a company layoff, and for the first 3 months everything was fine with full payment amounts. Starting in July, they suddenly began taking out federal and state taxes. Already tried looking through my online account settings but can't find where to change tax withholding preferences. Called the main unemployment number multiple times but can't get through to a real person. Tried emailing through the contact portal last week but no response. Has anyone dealt with this? How do I stop the tax withholding and go back to receiving my full benefit amount?

According to the ny unemployment website, they're required by federal law to give you the OPTION of withholding, but they can't just start doing it without your consent. Sounds like a system error to me.

why would u NOT want them to withhold taxes? ur just setting urself up for a big tax bill next april... unemployment is taxable income 🤦‍♀️
