NY unemployment ID.me verification nightmare - stuck with 'duplicate account' error for weeks

I lost my job in August and filed for unemployment on 8/25. Everything seemed fine until mid-September when I discovered I needed to verify through ID.me. When I tried to create an account, the system told me I already had a duplicate account registered with an email I've never used! I've called NY unemployment at least 7 times about this. Each rep just tells me to contact ID.me directly. I've emailed ID.me four times since 9/15 and only got one automated response saying they'd 'look into it' but never heard back. Last week, a different unemployment rep told me to fax copies of my driver's license, social security card, and birth certificate to some number (which I did on 10/24), but I have no confirmation they received anything and no way to follow up. It's been almost two months without benefits because of this stupid verification issue. Has anyone dealt with this ID.me duplicate account problem before? I'm seriously running out of options and money.

Rebecca Johnston

The exact same thing happened to me!!! I spent nearly 3 weeks trying to get past that stupid ID.me error. The whole system is completely broken. I kept getting bounced between unemployment and ID.me with neither taking responsibility. So frustrating.

After weeks of fighting with the ny unemployment system and getting nowhere with ID.me issues, I found this service called Claimyr that got me connected to an actual human being at unemployment! I was able to explain my situation to a real person who manually verified my identity in their system. Best money I ever spent to finally get my benefits flowing again. Check out their explanation video here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

This sounds too good to be true. Is this some kind of scam?

Not at all! I was super skeptical too but it actually works. They just help you get through to a real person on the phone instead of waiting on hold forever.

wait so what is this exactly? another government service or what?

It's a service that calls unemployment for you and stays on hold, then calls your phone when an agent picks up. Saved me like 3 hours of hold music! claimyr.com

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

No catch honestly. They just call for you and connect you with an agent when one is available. Talking to the agent got my benefits unlocked after weeks of nothing.

I had a similar issue with ID.me last year. What worked for me was doing a video verification with them instead. If you go to their help section there's an option for video chat verification where you show your documents to a live agent. It takes longer but they can manually verify you.

I tried that too but it wont even let me get to the video verification part because it keeps saying I have an existing account with a different email. So frustrating!

Ugh that sucks. Maybe try creating a brand new email address and see if you can start fresh with that? The system is so broken 😫

Look, this is what drives me CRAZY about ny unemployment. The system keeps breaking in new and exciting ways and we're all just stuck trying to navigate it ourselves. ID.me is a disaster. I had trouble with it too but mine was different - kept failing facial recognition. Had to call like 20 times.

The facial recognition system is trash. Failed me 7 times and I was in perfect lighting!

I know right?? I literally had to borrow my sisters ring light to finally get it to work 🤦‍♀️

i look completely different than my drivers license photo (lost weight, grew beard) and THATS what caused my ID.me hell. took weeks to resolve.

Honestly, everything about the unemployment system is designed to make you give up. The ID.me verification is just another hoop to jump through. Keep at it and document EVERYTHING - dates, times, who you spoke with. It's the only way to prove you've been trying when they inevitably blame you for the delay.

I work in tech and the ID.me system is notoriously bad. Here's what I recommend: 1) Clear your browser cache completely before attempting again 2) Try using a different device entirely (phone instead of computer or vice versa) 3) Call ID.me directly at 866-775-4363 instead of emailing 4) File a complaint with the NY Department of Labor about the verification issues 5) Reach out to your local state representative - they often have direct contacts If you're still getting nowhere, I've seen people have success with claimyr.com to get through to unemployment directly. The hold times right now are insane but talking to a live agent is the fastest way to get this fixed.

Thanks for the detailed advice. I'll try the different device approach today and call that direct number. My savings are almost gone at this point so I'm desperate.

Good luck! Let us know if anything works. These systems are so fragile and buggy, sometimes the simplest solution (like switching browsers) can magically fix it.

Have you reached out to your state senator's office? I had a similar issue and was stuck for 6 weeks. Called my state senator, and their constituent services person had it fixed in 3 days. They have special contacts at unemployment.

THIS!!! Seriously this is the best advice. My assemblyman's office fixed my claim when nobody else could.

I hadn't thought of that. Do I just call their main office number?

Yup just google your district's state senator or assembly person, call their office, and ask to speak to whoever handles unemployment cases or constituent services.

One trick that worked for me with ID.me issues was to report it as potential identity theft to them. Go to their help center and specifically say you think someone might have used your info fraudulently. They escalate those cases much faster because of liability issues.

Smart thinking! The magic words that get attention 👏

I'll definitely try this approach. At this point I'm willing to try anything.

Anyone else notice how much WORSE the ny unemployment system has gotten lately? Like they made all these "improvements" during covid and now it's more broken than ever 🤦‍♂️

Absolutely! The old system was at least predictably bad. This new one is like a mystery box of frustration 💯

they spent millions "upgrading" the system and somehow made it worse lmaoooo typical government project

It's like they intentionally made it harder to get benefits. The more roadblocks they put up, the fewer claims they have to pay 🤔

Try calling right when they open at 8am. I got through after only 20 minute wait that way. Later in the day it's impossible.

For the ID.me issue specifically - try using the ID.me help chat feature on their site. It's hidden but if you go to the help center and click around enough, you'll find a live chat option. I got someone to manually help me with my account that way after weeks of email silence.

where exactly is this chat feature? i cant find it anywhere 😩

It's super hidden. Go to help.id.me then scroll all the way to the bottom. There should be a little chat bubble icon in the corner that appears. It's not always available though.

I know this sounds weird, but have you tried making a Twitter post and tagging both ID.me and NY DOL? Sometimes the public shaming approach gets faster results than going through proper channels. Companies hate bad PR.

this actually works tho. got my issue resolved in 48 hrs after tweeting about it when emails did nothing for weeks

I feel for you... I went 11 weeks with no unemployment because of ID verification issues. Almost lost my apartment. The system is designed to fail us.
