NY unemployment ID.me nightmare with someone else using my email

My cousin started getting unemployment benefits after being laid off from his restaurant job last November. He found part-time work in May, so he stopped claiming. Now he's been let go again in August and tried to reopen his claim, but the system is forcing him to verify through ID.me first. When he tries to set up the account, he gets this message saying there's already an account with an email address he's never used before! We've been trying to get this fixed for almost a month. Called NY unemployment 8 times and they keep saying that only ID.me can fix this issue, but ID.me only responds through email. All we've gotten is an automated response saying "we'll be in touch" over 3 weeks ago. Meanwhile he's going on 6 weeks with no income and rent is due. Has anyone dealt with this ID.me duplicate account issue? How long did it take to resolve? I'm seriously worried he's gonna get evicted before this gets fixed.

Omg I had a similar issue with ID.me last month! The trick is you need to open a support ticket with them specifically for "account merger" not just general help. There's a special form on their help center. Still took them like 10 days to respond but at least they fixed it. The other thing that helped was I kept emailing every 3 days with the same ticket number in the subject line. squeaky wheel gets the grease and all that.

Thank you! I'll try the account merger form. Did you have to provide any specific documents to prove it was your identity?

Yeah they asked for a photo ID and then had me do a video selfie thing. Kinda annoying but once I did that they cleared it up within 48hrs.

this is why the system is so broken. why do we need id.me to begin with? its a private company with our data 🤮

After trying for 3 weeks to reach someone at ny unemployment about my ID.me issues, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got a callback with an actual agent! Best money I ever spent to get my issues fixed. They did some quick verification and forwarded me to a supervisor who could override the ID.me requirement temporarily. Check them out here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

sounds too good to be true... anyone else try this?

Definitely worked for me! The unemployment office phone system is designed to make you give up, but this service just keeps calling until they get through. I was skeptical too but was desperate after weeks of nothing.

wait so how does it work? they just call for you and then connect you?

Paolo Ricci

Yep! They automate the calling and waiting on hold part. I set it up, went about my day, and then got a call when an actual human was on the line. Saved me literally hours of my life.

You must work for them or something. Nothing gets through to the NY unemployment office these days.

nope, just a regular person who was at the end of my rope after weeks of trying. believe what you want, but it worked for me. claimyr.com if you're interested.

ID.me is the absolute WORST. I had almost the identical problem and it took them 5 weeks to resolve it. They kept saying they'd escalate my case but nothing would happen. I finally got it fixed by tweeting at them publicly and tagging the NY department of labor in the tweet. Magically got an email within hours after that.

Your cousin needs to send a certified letter to both ID.me AND the ny unemployment office explaining the situation. I was stuck in this same hellhole for almost 2 months. What worked for me was sending physical mail with copies of all my documentation. Sometimes these digital systems just don't work right but old fashioned mail gets to an actual human.

Yara Nassar

That's a good idea, we haven't tried actual mail yet. What address did you use for ID.me? Their website only shows email contact info.

I used their corporate address in Mclean, Virginia. You can find it if you google their headquarters address. Make sure you include your name, DOB, last 4 of SSN, and copies of your ID so they can locate your account info.

This sounds like identity theft honestly. If someone else is using an email that's supposedly connected to your cousin's information, they might be trying to claim benefits in his name. My brother had this happen and it was a nightmare. You need to report this to the fraud department at NYSDOL immediately!

-

Yara Nassar

Omg I didn't even think about that possibility. How do we contact the fraud department specifically?

Call 888-598-2077 which is the NY fraud hotline. Also file a police report ASAP and get a case number - you'll need that for the unemployment office to take the fraud claim seriously.

definitely do this! i had the same thing happen and it turned out someone filed in 3 different states using my info. the unemployment fraud dept actually took it seriously unlike the regular agents.

Step by step guide for fixing ID.me issues with NY unemployment (from someone who's been through this hell): 1. First, try calling ID.me directly at 866-775-4363. Yes they say email only but this number does work sometimes. 2. Next, create a completely new email address and try setting up a fresh ID.me account with it. Sometimes their system gets confused with existing emails. 3. If that doesn't work, go to the NY DOL website and look for the "secure message" center. Write specifically asking for an "identity verification override" due to ID.me technical issues. 4. While waiting, try using a service like Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual human at unemployment. They basically wait on hold for you and call when they get someone. 5. When you do get through to NYSDOL, ask specifically for a Tier 2 specialist who handles ID verification issues. Regular agents can't help with this. This process took me 3 weeks but I finally got it resolved. The key is attacking it from multiple angles at once. Don't just wait for one approach to work. Good luck! The system is broken but with persistence you can get through it.

Thank you so much for this detailed breakdown! We'll try all of these approaches. Did you have success with the Claimyr service?

Yes! Claimyr was actually what finally got me through to someone who could help. I spent probably 30+ hours trying to call myself with no luck. Well worth it to get my benefits flowing again.

THIS!! I'm saving this comment because this is literally the most useful thing I've seen about id.me problems. Thank you!!!!

Have you tried reaching out to your state representative? I was stuck in ID.me purgatory for 6 weeks and nothing was working until I contacted my assemblyman's office. They have special liaisons with the unemployment office and got my issue resolved in 3 days after I'd been trying for over a month.

-

Yara Nassar

No we haven't tried that yet. How do you find the right person to contact?

Just google "[your county] NY state assemblyman" and it'll show who represents your district. They all have constituent services that deal with unemployment issues constantly. They love fixing these problems because it's an easy win for them politically.

this is seriously underrated advice 💯 my state senator's office fixed my unemployment in like 2 days after months of nothing

I went thru this exact thing, but it was MY email that someone else had used. Turned out to be identity theft. You need to: 1) File a police report 2) Put a fraud alert on his credit 3) Contact the FTC at identitytheft.gov 4) Call NYSDOL fraud line. Don't just focus on fixing the ID.me issue - this could be much bigger if someone has his personal info.

Yara Nassar

This is really scary to think about. Did you ever find out who was using your identity?

0 coins

-

Malik Johnson

No, but the unemployment office told me there had been claims filed in my name in 3 different states! The detective I worked with said there are massive fraud rings doing this on an industrial scale. Definitely take it seriously.

pro tip: go on twitter and @ the NYSDOL and ID.me accounts in the same tweet describing your issue. Public shaming works wonders. I was ignored for 4 weeks then tweeted about my problem and suddenly got emails from both within hours. They hate the bad publicity.

someone posted this trick on another thread and it worked for me - try going through the ID.me recovery process but instead of using the email they say is a duplicate, use your PHONE NUMBER for recovery. For some reason this bypassed the duplicate email issue for me and I was able to verify that way!

-

Yara Nassar

Interesting! I'll have him try this right away. Do you remember where in the process this option came up?

When it says "Email already in use" there should be a small link that says "try another verification method" or something similar. Click that and it gives phone options.

ive literally been in this EXACT situation for 7 weeks now!!! ny unemployment is a joke. ive called over 50 times and either get hung up on or told "we cant help with id.me issues" 😡 plz update if you figure anything out cuz im about to be homeless over this stupid technology.

have you tried claimyr.com? it's the only way I finally got through to someone who could actually help me.

It's a service that calls unemployment for you and stays on hold, then connects you when they get a human. Saved me from the endless calling and hanging up cycle. I was skeptical but desperate - worked within a day.

Check if your cousin's SSN has been leaked in any data breaches. Go to haveibeenpwned.com and enter his email - if it's been in any breaches, that might explain how someone got his info. My husband had the same ID.me issue and it turned out his data was leaked in the Equifax breach years ago.

lmao welcome to the ny unemployment experience 🤡 where nothing works and nobody cares. took me 4 months to get my benefits after identity issues. best advice: document EVERYTHING. every call, email, letter. you'll need it when they inevitably lose your info or claim they never received it.

4 months?! That's insane. My cousin can't wait that long... he's already behind on rent

yeah it's totally insane. the only thing that finally worked was getting my case escalated to a supervisor. but it's like impossible to get to one unless you know someone or get lucky with the right agent.

This is why I ended up using claimyr.com - I couldn't keep playing the call lottery hoping to get through. Their service connected me with an agent who transferred me to a supervisor right away.
