NY unemployment 1099-G shows $5K paid but I haven't received any payments since September

Soooo I just got my 1099-G form in the mail yesterday and I'm completely confused. According to this form, NY unemployment supposedly paid me $5,810 since September 2024. The problem? I haven't received A SINGLE PAYMENT! I've been faithfully certifying every single week for the past 17 weeks straight and my bank account is still empty. No deposits, no pending transactions, nothing. How can they send me a tax form for money I never got?? Has anyone else dealt with this bizarre situation? I'm legit laughing to keep from crying at this point 😂 because I've been struggling for months while apparently the IRS thinks I've been getting paid! What should I do about this?

This is actually a known issue that happens occasionally. The system sometimes generates a 1099-G when benefits have been approved but not actually distributed. You need to contact NYSDOL immediately to report the discrepancy. They'll need to issue a corrected 1099-G and investigate why your payments haven't been released. The most likely causes are: 1. Direct deposit information error 2. A hold on your account that wasn't communicated properly 3. A system glitch where payments were authorized but not processed This is important to fix quickly because the IRS will expect you to pay taxes on money you never received.

Thanks for the info! I tried calling them 8 times today and can't get through - just the automated message saying high call volume. Do you know if there's a specific department I should ask for when I finally get a person?

Call them ASAP! The exact same thing happened to me in December. After weeks of trying to get through, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me past the phone tree and connected with an actual agent in less than 30 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Turns out in my case they had the wrong routing number for my bank account but nobody bothered to notify me. The agent was able to fix it on the spot and release all my back payments. I got 14 weeks of payments deposited three days later. Worth every penny because I was about to be evicted before getting that money.

Does this Claimyr thing actually work? Seems sketchy to pay for something that should be free. No offense but sounds like ur getting a commission lol

@casual_commenter No commission, just sharing what worked for me after weeks of frustration. You can keep calling the regular way if you want, but I couldn't get through for almost a month trying daily.

I used Claimyr too back in January when I had a similar issue (though not with a 1099-G). It's legit - they don't work for NYSDOL, they just have a system that navigates the phone tree and waits on hold for you. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for weeks.

UNBELIEVABLE how they can mess up THIS badly!!! I had a similar nightmare last year. Got a 1099-G for $8,300 that I NEVER received and spent MONTHS fighting to fix it. The incompetence is staggering - they expect us to live on NOTHING while they sit in their cushy offices checking boxes on forms!!! And then they report income to the IRS that WE NEVER GOT!!!!! The worst part? When I finally got through, the lady acted like I was trying to commit fraud by questioning the form. THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN BEYOND REPAIR.

Ugh that's what I'm afraid of... how long did it take you to get it resolved? Did you ever get the back payments they owed you?

@anxious_response It took almost 3 months of constant calling and emails. I finally got a supervisor who actually LISTENED and fixed everything in 10 minutes once I reached them. Yes, I eventually got all my back payments in one lump sum, but only after threatening to call my state rep. Document EVERYTHING - times you called, who you spoke with, etc. You'll need it!!!

Okay I'm definitely going to start keeping a log. Already took pictures of the 1099-G form and all my weekly certifications showing as completed. Thanks for the advice!

something similar happend to my brother last year. turned out his address was wrong in the system so all his checks were being mailed to his old apartment. he never updated his address when he moved i guess. maybe check all ur contact info is correct?

My address must be correct since I received the 1099-G there... but good thought. I opted for direct deposit anyway, not paper checks.

This happened to my cousin last year and it turns out someone had stolen his identity and was claiming benefits using his information but with a different bank account. Not saying that's your situation, but definitely something to check. When he finally got through to an agent, they were able to see that the payments were going to an account he didn't recognize. Scary stuff.

Oh wow that's terrifying! I hadn't even considered identity theft. Now I'm even more anxious to talk to someone there.

Based on everything you've shared, there are a few steps you should take immediately: 1. Keep certifying weekly even while this is being resolved 2. Request your payment history through your online account - this will show if payments were issued and to where 3. Check if your bank account information is correct in the system 4. File a formal request for investigation regarding the missing payments 5. Request a corrected 1099-G once you confirm the discrepancy The good news is that if the system shows the payments were approved but not received, you're entitled to all back payments once the issue is resolved. The challenging part is getting through to someone who can help, as others have mentioned.

Thank you for breaking it down so clearly! I just checked my payment history and it shows 17 payments as "processed" but none of them hit my account. Definitely something wrong with the banking info maybe? I'm going to try reaching them again tomorrow morning.

After working through a similar issue, I found out my payments were being held because of an unresolved identity verification flag on my account. The system was showing payments as processed but they were actually in a holding pattern. When you finally reach an agent, specifically ask them to check for any "holds" or "flags" on your account. Sometimes they don't see these unless they specifically look for them. Once they removed the flag, all my back payments were released within 48 hours.

That's really helpful information - I'll definitely ask about holds or flags. It's so frustrating that these things can happen without any notification!

just wondering... if you've been certifying for 17 weeks with no money why did u wait so long to say something?

I've been calling regularly but never get through. I posted on here before about the delays but didn't get many responses. The 1099-G is what finally pushed me over the edge because now it's a tax issue too.

Just wanted to follow up - were you able to get through to anyone at NYSDOL? If you're still having trouble, remember that you can also try contacting your state assembly person's office. They often have dedicated staff for helping constituents with unemployment issues and can sometimes get faster responses than calling directly.

UPDATE: I finally got through today using the Claimyr service someone mentioned! It actually worked. Turns out there was a routing number error in my direct deposit info. One digit was wrong! The agent corrected it and said I should receive all back payments within 3-5 business days. They're also sending a corrected 1099-G. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for your help!
