Why did I get a 1099-G from Washington ESD if I didn't receive unemployment benefits?
I'm really confused right now. I just received a 1099-G form from Washington ESD showing $4,200 in unemployment compensation for 2024, but I never actually received any unemployment benefits. I filed a claim back in March but it was denied after adjudication due to insufficient work history. I never got a single payment, yet here's this tax form saying I did. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm worried the IRS will think I had income that I didn't report, but I literally never got any money from Washington ESD. Should I be concerned about this affecting my taxes?

This is actually more common than you'd think. Sometimes Washington ESD issues 1099-G forms even for claims that were later denied or had overpayment issues. The form reflects what their system shows as 'paid' even if you never actually received the funds. You'll need to contact them to get a corrected form.

•That's so frustrating! How am I supposed to contact them though? I've been trying to call for weeks about other issues and can never get through.

•Yeah the phone lines are impossible. I've been trying to reach someone about my adjudication for over a month.

Check your eServices account online. Sometimes there are payments listed there that you might have forgotten about, or payments that were issued but then clawed back due to eligibility issues.

•I checked and there's nothing showing any payments were ever made. My claim status just shows 'Denied' from back in April.

•Then definitely sounds like an error on their end. You'll need that corrected before filing your taxes.

Had a similar issue last year but found a service called Claimyr that actually got me through to someone at Washington ESD. They handle the calling for you - you can check it out at claimyr.com. There's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of trying to get through myself.

•How does that work exactly? Do you have to give them all your personal information?

Zara Malik
•Not really, it's pretty straightforward. They just need enough info to get you connected to the right department. Way easier than sitting on hold for hours.

•Sounds too good to be true. How much does something like that cost?

Washington ESD's computer systems are notorious for this kind of mistake. I work in tax prep and see incorrect 1099-G forms from them every year. The key is getting documentation that shows no benefits were actually received. Keep records of your denied claim status.

•Should I still file my taxes normally or wait until this gets resolved? I don't want to get audited over income I never received.

Nia Davis
•You can file normally - just don't report the unemployment income since you didn't receive it. But definitely get the 1099-G corrected ASAP in case the IRS questions the discrepancy.

this happened to my sister too!!! washington esd sent her a 1099-g for like $3000 but she never got unemployment either. took her months to get it fixed and she had to send them proof that her claim was denied

Diego Flores
•How did she finally get it resolved? Did she have to go through the appeal process or was there another way?

•she ended up having to mail them a letter with copies of all her documents showing the claim was denied. took forever but they eventually sent a corrected form

I'm dealing with the exact same thing right now! Filed in February, got denied after adjudication, never received a penny, but got a 1099-G for $2,800. It's like their left hand doesn't know what their right hand is doing.

•Have you been able to get in touch with anyone to fix it? This is so stressful with tax season coming up.

•Not yet. I've tried calling probably 50 times. Someone mentioned that Claimyr service - might have to try that at this point.

•Yeah, that's what I used. Really did work for getting through to the right person about 1099-G corrections.

Washington ESD is such a mess. How do they even issue tax forms for money they never paid out? This system is broken.

•It's probably some automated system that doesn't sync properly with their adjudication database. Typical government IT problems.

•Well it's causing real problems for people trying to file their taxes correctly. Someone needs to be held accountable for this.

For anyone dealing with this issue, you can also try contacting the Washington ESD 1099-G correction department directly. They have a specific process for correcting erroneous forms, but you'll need documentation proving your claim was denied and no benefits were paid.

•Do you know if there's a specific phone number for that department? Or do I have to go through the main line?

Anastasia Ivanova
•Unfortunately, it's usually through the main customer service line, which is why it's so hard to reach them. That's the main frustration with Washington ESD - everything funnels through the same overloaded phone system.

Check if you had any partial payments or waiting week payments that might have been processed and then reversed. Sometimes those show up on 1099-G forms even if you never actually received the money in your account.

Diego Flores
•I don't think so - my claim was denied pretty early in the process due to work history issues. But I'll double-check my bank statements to be sure.

Ethan Brown
•Good idea. Also check if there were any automatic deposits that got reversed. Sometimes those create phantom payments in their system.

This is why I keep detailed records of everything with Washington ESD. Screenshot your claim status, print out denial letters, save all correspondence. When stuff like this happens, you need proof.

Diego Flores
•That's really good advice. I do have the denial letter and screenshots of my claim status, so hopefully that will be enough documentation.

Yuki Yamamoto
•Yeah, that should be sufficient to get the 1099-G corrected. Just be persistent with them.

happened to me in 2023. had to file form 4852 with my tax return to report the correct amount of unemployment compensation (which was zero). then followed up with washington esd to get the corrected 1099-g

Diego Flores
•Form 4852? I've never heard of that. Is that something I file with the IRS directly?
0 coins
Carmen Ortiz
•yes its a substitute form when you have incorrect w-2 or 1099 info. your tax preparer should know about it or you can get it from irs.gov
0 coins
Nia Davis
•Correct - Form 4852 is the substitute for Form W-2/1099 when you receive incorrect information documents. Good backup option if Washington ESD won't fix the 1099-G in time for filing.

I wonder if this has something to do with their system upgrades last year. Seems like a lot of people are having issues with incorrect 1099-G forms this tax season.

Sean Murphy
•Wouldn't surprise me. Every time they 'upgrade' something it breaks ten other things.

•There were definitely some system issues during the migration. Could be contributing to these 1099-G discrepancies.

Update on the Claimyr thing - I actually used them again last week for a different issue and got through to someone within 30 minutes. They were able to help me start the process for getting my 1099-G corrected. Worth trying if you're stuck.

•I'm going to try that. I can't keep spending hours every day trying to call Washington ESD myself.

Diego Flores
•Thanks for the update. I think I need to look into this too since I'm not getting anywhere with regular calls.

Make sure you also check if there were any identity theft issues with your claim. Sometimes fraudulent claims can result in 1099-G forms being issued even if you never received benefits.
0 coins
Diego Flores
•Oh wow, I hadn't thought of that. How would I check for identity theft on my unemployment claim?
0 coins
Zoe Papadakis
•You can check your eServices account for any claims you didn't file, and also check your credit report for any unusual activity. Washington ESD has an identity theft reporting process too.

this whole thread is making me nervous about my own taxes. i got denied for unemployment too but haven't received any tax forms yet. should i be expecting one?

Anastasia Ivanova
•If you never received any payments and your claim was properly denied, you shouldn't get a 1099-G. But keep an eye out just in case - seems like Washington ESD's systems are glitchy this year.

For what it's worth, I had a similar issue with Washington ESD and it took about 6-8 weeks to get the corrected 1099-G after I first contacted them. So start the process as soon as possible if you need it fixed before filing taxes.
0 coins
Diego Flores
•6-8 weeks?! That's going to push me past the tax filing deadline. Did you have to file an extension?

•I ended up filing with the incorrect info and then amending my return when I got the corrected form. Wasn't ideal but it worked out.

Check the 1099-G form carefully - sometimes they'll show the amount in box 1 but then have an adjustment in box 2 that zeros it out. The net effect should be zero if no benefits were actually paid.
0 coins
Diego Flores
•I looked at mine and box 1 shows $4,200 but box 2 is blank. So it's definitely showing as if I received the full amount.
0 coins
Mei Liu
•Then yeah, that's definitely an error that needs to be corrected. Box 2 should show any repayments or adjustments.

washington esd really needs to get their act together. how many people are going to have tax problems because of their system errors? this is ridiculous

•Exactly! And we're the ones who have to spend hours trying to fix their mistakes.

•There should be some kind of penalty for government agencies that issue incorrect tax documents. This creates real problems for taxpayers.

Final thought - if you do end up needing to contact Washington ESD about this, make sure you have your Social Security number, the exact amount on the 1099-G, and documentation of your claim denial ready. They'll need all of that information to process the correction.
