IRS taxing unemployment benefits for 2021 - Washington ESD tax questions

Got my 1099-G from Washington ESD yesterday and I'm confused about the tax situation. I collected unemployment for about 6 months in 2021 and didn't have taxes taken out at the time. Now I'm reading conflicting info online about whether the IRS is taxing unemployment benefits for 2021. Some sites say there was an exemption but I can't figure out if it applies to Washington state. Has anyone dealt with this yet? I'm worried I'm going to owe a huge tax bill.

Yes, unemployment benefits are generally taxable by the IRS. However, there was a special provision for 2020 tax year where the first $10,200 of unemployment benefits were tax-free for people with adjusted gross income under $150,000. But that exemption didn't carry over to 2021. You'll need to report your Washington ESD benefits as income on your 2021 tax return.

Wait so the exemption was only for 2020? I thought it applied to 2021 too. This is going to hurt my refund badly.

0 coins

Correct - the $10,200 exemption was a one-time thing for 2020 only. All unemployment benefits received in 2021 are taxable income.

0 coins

i didnt have taxes taken out either and now i owe like $2000 to the irs. shouldve elected to have washington esd withhold taxes when i was filing my weekly claims

0 coins

Ugh that's exactly what I'm afraid of. Did you end up setting up a payment plan with the IRS?

0 coins

yeah they let me do monthly payments. wasnt too bad to set up online

0 coins

This is why I always recommend having 10% withheld for federal taxes when you're setting up your unemployment claim. You can change this election when filing your weekly claims through the Washington ESD website. The 1099-G will show both your total benefits and any taxes that were withheld.

0 coins

I wish I had known this earlier. Is it too late to have taxes withheld if I'm still collecting benefits?

0 coins

No, you can change your withholding election at any time by logging into your Washington ESD account and updating your tax withholding preferences for future payments.

0 coins

This is good advice. I learned this the hard way during the 2020 tax season.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask about your 1099-G or tax withholding, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get connected to an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

0 coins

Never heard of that before. Does it actually work for reaching Washington ESD?

0 coins

Yeah it worked for me when I needed to verify some information on my 1099-G. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

0 coins

Interesting, I might have to try this. I've been trying to reach someone at Washington ESD for weeks about my tax documents.

0 coins

THE IRS IS SCREWING UNEMPLOYED PEOPLE AGAIN! First they make it impossible to find work during the pandemic then they tax us on the benefits we needed to survive. This whole system is rigged against working people.

0 coins

I understand the frustration, but unemployment benefits have always been taxable income. The 2020 exemption was actually unusual.

0 coins

Maybe they've always been taxable but that doesn't make it right when people are struggling to get by

0 coins

Thanks everyone for the info. Sounds like I need to prepare for a tax bill. Does anyone know if there are any deductions I can take related to job searching while I was unemployed?

0 coins

Job search expenses used to be deductible but that changed with the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. For tax years 2018-2025, you generally can't deduct job search expenses as miscellaneous itemized deductions.

0 coins

Of course they took that away too. Thanks for letting me know though.

0 coins

just a heads up that if you moved states while collecting unemployment, you might need to file returns in multiple states. i collected from washington esd but moved to oregon and had to deal with both state tax systems

0 coins

Thankfully I stayed in Washington the whole time. That sounds like a nightmare to deal with.

0 coins

it wasnt fun but tax software like turbotax handled most of it automatically

0 coins

One more thing to consider - if you received any overpayment notices from Washington ESD and had to pay money back, that can affect your taxes too. The amount you actually kept after repayments is what gets reported on your 1099-G.

0 coins

Luckily I didn't have any overpayment issues. But good to know for anyone who did.

0 coins

I had to pay back $800 and it was reflected correctly on my 1099-G. Washington ESD was actually pretty good about adjusting the tax document.

0 coins

Does anyone know if the state of Washington taxes unemployment benefits too? Or is it just federal?

0 coins

Washington state doesn't have a state income tax, so you only need to worry about federal taxes on your unemployment benefits.

0 coins

Oh right, forgot about that. One less thing to worry about then.

0 coins

my tax preparer told me that even though unemployment is taxable, its still better than not having any income at all. the tax burden is usually manageable compared to being completely broke

0 coins

That's true, I'm grateful I had the benefits when I needed them. Just wish I had planned better for the tax implications.

0 coins

exactly, and if you cant pay the full amount the irs is usually pretty reasonable about payment plans

0 coins

Another Claimyr update - I used them again this week to ask Washington ESD about getting a corrected 1099-G because mine had the wrong address. The agent was able to send me a new one electronically within a few days. Super helpful when you need to actually talk to someone instead of just using the website.

0 coins

That's good to know. I've been waiting weeks for a response to my message about my 1099-G having incorrect information.

0 coins

Yeah the messaging system through the website is pretty slow. Direct phone contact is way faster when you can actually get through.

0 coins

i made the mistake of not saving any money for taxes while i was collecting. spent every penny just trying to get by. now i owe money i dont have

0 coins

That's a tough situation but very common. The IRS has payment plan options, and you can often negotiate a manageable monthly amount.

0 coins

thanks ill look into that. better than ignoring it i guess

0 coins

For anyone still confused about this, the key thing to remember is that unemployment benefits are treated just like wages for tax purposes. If you received a W-2 showing $30,000 in wages, you'd expect to pay taxes on that. Same principle applies to your 1099-G from Washington ESD.

0 coins

That makes sense when you put it that way. I guess I was hoping there would be more tax breaks for people who were unemployed.

0 coins

I understand the hope, but from the IRS perspective, it's income regardless of the source. The 2020 exemption was really unusual.

0 coins

quick question - does anyone know if the extra $300 weekly payments from federal programs are also taxable? or just the regular state unemployment benefits?

0 coins

All unemployment benefits are taxable, including the federal supplemental payments. It should all be included on your 1099-G from Washington ESD.

0 coins

ok thanks, thats what i figured but wanted to make sure

0 coins

this whole thread is making me realize i need to be more proactive about financial planning. never thought about tax implications when i was just trying to pay rent

0 coins

Don't beat yourself up about it. Most people don't think about taxes when they're in survival mode. The important thing is learning for next time.

0 coins

true, and hopefully there wont be a next time anyway

0 coins

I used Claimyr last month when I couldn't figure out why my 1099-G showed a different amount than what I thought I received. Turns out there was an overpayment from 2020 that got deducted from my 2021 benefits. The Washington ESD agent was able to explain the whole situation and send me a breakdown. Worth using when you need actual answers instead of generic website info.

0 coins

That's exactly the kind of situation where talking to a real person makes all the difference. Good to know it worked out.

0 coins

Yeah, I was stressing about it for weeks thinking there was some mistake. Turned out everything was correct, just more complicated than I realized.

0 coins

does turbotax or other tax software handle unemployment benefits automatically if you import your 1099-g? or do you have to enter it manually?

0 coins

Most tax software can import 1099-G information directly, but it's always good to double-check that the amounts match what's on your actual form.

0 coins

perfect, that should make it easier. thanks

0 coins

Bottom line for anyone still reading this thread: unemployment benefits from 2021 are fully taxable, there's no exemption like there was for 2020, and you'll need to report everything on your 1099-G as income. If you didn't have taxes withheld, set aside money or set up a payment plan with the IRS. And next time, elect to have taxes withheld from your weekly claims to avoid this situation.

0 coins

Thanks for this summary. Really helps clarify everything that's been discussed here.

0 coins

No problem. Tax season is stressful enough without being confused about the basics.

0 coins

agreed, this thread has been super helpful for understanding the whole situation
