Was unemployment taxable 2021 - Washington ESD tax confusion help needed

I'm just now getting around to doing my 2021 taxes (I know, I know) and I'm totally confused about whether my Washington ESD unemployment benefits from that year were taxable or not. I received about $8,200 in regular UI benefits between March and August 2021. Some people are telling me there was some kind of tax break that year but I can't figure out what forms I need or if I owe taxes on this money. Did anyone else deal with this situation? I'm worried I'm going to owe a bunch of money I don't have.

Yes, unemployment was taxable in 2021 BUT there was a special provision that excluded up to $10,200 of unemployment compensation from federal taxes for people with adjusted gross income under $150,000. Since you received $8,200, all of it should be excluded from your federal taxes. You should have received a 1099-G form from Washington ESD showing the amount you received.

Thank you! I do have the 1099-G form somewhere. So I don't owe federal taxes on any of it?

0 coins

Correct, as long as your total adjusted gross income was under $150K. The exclusion was part of the American Rescue Plan Act.

wait hold up, i thought ALL unemployment was tax free in 2021??? i never paid taxes on mine and now im freaking out

0 coins

Only the first $10,200 was excluded from federal taxes, and only if your income was under $150,000. If you received more than that or had higher income, you may owe taxes.

0 coins

oh crap i got like 15k that year... do i need to file an amended return?

0 coins

I had the same confusion! The IRS was supposed to automatically process refunds for people who filed before the law changed, but it was a mess. I ended up having to call them multiple times to sort it out. If you're just filing now though, you should be able to claim the exclusion directly on your return.

Did you have trouble getting through to anyone at the IRS? I've been trying to call about other tax issues and can never reach a human.

0 coins

It was horrible - spent hours on hold. Actually found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to government agencies faster. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Wish I'd known about it then!

Don't forget about state taxes too. Washington doesn't have state income tax so you're lucky there, but if you moved to another state during 2021 you might owe state taxes to that state on your unemployment benefits.

0 coins

I stayed in Washington the whole time, so I think I'm good on state taxes. Thanks for the reminder though!

UGH the whole 2021 tax situation was such a nightmare. The government made unemployment benefits taxable then gave us a break but only told us AFTER most people already filed. I had to amend my return twice because of all the confusion.

0 coins

Same here! Filed in February 2021 and then had to wait months for the IRS to process the automatic adjustment. What a mess.

0 coins

And don't even get me started on trying to reach anyone at the IRS for help during all that chaos.

For 2021 specifically, here's what you need to know: Regular unemployment benefits (like what you received from Washington ESD) were taxable income, but the American Rescue Plan Act provided an exclusion for up to $10,200 per person ($20,400 for married filing jointly) if your AGI was under $150,000. This exclusion applied to all types of unemployment compensation including regular UI, PEUC, and PUA.

0 coins

This is super helpful! Since I only received $8,200 and my income was way under $150K, sounds like I'm in the clear for federal taxes.

0 coins

What about if someone received unemployment in 2020 and 2021? Does the exclusion apply to both years?

0 coins

No, the $10,200 exclusion was only for 2020 unemployment benefits. The 2021 exclusion I mentioned was a separate provision just for 2021.

0 coins

I'm a tax preparer and saw so many confused clients about this. The key thing to remember is that even though you don't owe federal taxes on the excluded amount, you still need to report the full amount of unemployment benefits you received on your return. The exclusion is taken on a separate line.

0 coins

So I still enter the full $8,200 on my tax return but then claim the exclusion somewhere else?

0 coins

Exactly! Report the full amount from your 1099-G, then claim the exclusion on Schedule 1. Most tax software should handle this automatically if you answer the questions correctly.

0 coins

ok so im definitely screwed then since i got more than 10,200... how much trouble am i in for not paying taxes on the excess amount?

0 coins

You'll need to file an amended return (Form 1040-X) and pay the taxes owed on the amount over $10,200, plus any penalties and interest. The sooner you file the amended return, the less the penalties will be.

0 coins

ugh this is gonna cost me so much money i dont have

0 coins

Another thing to watch out for - if you had federal taxes withheld from your unemployment benefits during 2021, you might actually get a refund even if you owe taxes on part of it. Check your 1099-G to see if any taxes were withheld.

0 coins

Good point! I think I did elect to have taxes withheld when I was filing my weekly claims. I'll check the form.

0 coins

For anyone still dealing with IRS issues from 2021, I had success using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. They helped me get through to the IRS when I needed to check on my amended return status. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

0 coins

how much does that cost? im already gonna owe money i dont have

0 coins

It's way cheaper than you'd think, and they have the service at claimyr.com. Definitely worth it if you need to actually talk to someone at the IRS.

0 coins

Just to be clear about the timeline - the $10,200 exclusion for 2021 unemployment was different from the 2020 exclusion. For 2021, it was specifically for people who received unemployment compensation and had AGI under $150,000. The IRS didn't automatically process these like they did for some 2020 returns.

0 coins

So since I'm filing late, I should be able to claim the exclusion directly on my 2021 return without needing to amend anything later?

0 coins

Correct! Since you're filing after the law was in effect, you can claim the exclusion directly.

0 coins

The whole thing was such a cluster. First they tell us unemployment is taxable, then they change their minds halfway through tax season. I swear the government just makes this stuff up as they go along.

0 coins

Tell me about it. And then good luck getting anyone on the phone to explain what's going on.

0 coins

One more important detail - if you received other types of income in 2021 that pushed your AGI over $150,000, you wouldn't qualify for the unemployment exclusion at all. It's not prorated, it's all or nothing based on your total income.

0 coins

My only income in 2021 was the unemployment and maybe $2,000 from a part-time job, so I should definitely qualify.

0 coins

Also remember that even though Washington doesn't have state income tax, if you moved during 2021 or lived in multiple states, you might have different rules to deal with. Each state handled the unemployment tax exclusion differently.

0 coins

Good point! I had friends who moved from Washington to Oregon during 2021 and had to deal with Oregon's rules too.

0 coins

update: i looked at my 1099-G and i had $2,400 in federal taxes withheld so maybe i wont owe as much as i thought

0 coins

That should help! You'll still owe taxes on the amount over $10,200, but the withholding will be credited toward what you owe.

0 coins

This thread is super helpful! I was putting off my 2021 taxes too because I was confused about all this. Sounds like I need to dig up my 1099-G and just get it done.

0 coins

Same! I feel so much better about tackling this now. Thanks everyone for the explanations.

0 coins

Quick tip - if you can't find your 1099-G, you can download it from your Washington ESD account online. Way faster than waiting for them to mail you a copy.

0 coins

Perfect! I'll check there if I can't find my paper copy.

0 coins

For anyone who needs to talk to the IRS about 2021 unemployment tax issues, seriously check out Claimyr. I tried calling the IRS directly so many times and could never get through. With their service I was connected to someone within 20 minutes. Game changer.

0 coins

How does that even work? Do they have some special number or something?

0 coins

They have a system that monitors wait times and calls you back when an agent is available. Check out the demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ - it explains everything.

0 coins

Final reminder for everyone - even if your unemployment benefits are excluded from federal taxes, they still count as income for purposes of other tax credits and deductions. So they might affect your Earned Income Credit, Child Tax Credit, etc.

0 coins

Good to know! I don't have kids so probably doesn't affect me, but important for others to consider.

0 coins

Hope this helps everyone get their 2021 taxes sorted out. The unemployment tax situation that year was confusing for everyone, including tax professionals. Don't feel bad about being confused - just make sure you file correctly now that you have the right information.

Thanks so much everyone! This thread saved me from making a big mistake on my taxes.

Agreed! Super helpful information all around.
