EDD Form 1099-G showing zeros for all 2024 unemployment benefits - tax filing issue

I'm completely confused about my 1099-G form from EDD. I received unemployment for about 5 months in 2024 (roughly $12,500 total), but when I downloaded my 1099-G from UI Online, every box shows $0.00! I need this for my taxes and the deadline is coming up fast. Has anyone else had this problem? I've been trying to call EDD for 3 days straight but can't get through to anyone. I'm worried about filing my taxes without the correct information and getting in trouble with the IRS. Is this a system glitch or am I looking at the wrong form somehow?

This is actually a common issue right now. EDD's system had a processing delay this year for 1099-G forms. If you look at the date on your form, it might have been generated before all your payments were processed. Try going back to UI Online and requesting a new 1099-G form. There should be an option to 'View 1099G Information' under the 'More Services' menu. Make sure you're looking at tax year 2024, not 2023.

Thank you!!! I just checked and I was actually looking at my 2023 form that shows zeros because I didn't receive benefits that year. When I selected 2024 specifically, it shows a different form with the correct amounts. I feel so stupid now but appreciate the help!

This is why I hate the EDD website. They make everything so confusing! Same thing happened to me last year and I ended up filing late because of it.

If you can't get it resolved through the website, you NEED to talk to an EDD rep. I had this issue and it turned out there was an issue with my identity verification that was affecting my tax documents. I wasted 4 days trying to call them directly before I found Claimyr (claimyr.com). They got me through to an EDD agent in about 20 minutes. Saved me so much frustration! There's a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km

I second this recommendation. The EDD phone system is absolutely overwhelmed this time of year with tax document issues. If you need to speak with someone quickly, this is definitely an option worth considering. Just make sure you have your claim details ready when you do get through to an agent.

This happened to me but for a different reason. My 1099-G showed zeros because my benefits were under appeal during the time they generated the forms. After my appeal was approved, I had to specifically request an updated 1099-G by calling EDD. So it could be a timing issue with when benefits were paid vs when the form was generated. DID YOU CHECK IF THE FORM IS MARKED AS 'CORRECTED' at the top? Sometimes they issue a preliminary one with zeros then a corrected one later.

No, mine doesn't say 'corrected' anywhere. Another commenter helped me figure it out - I was just looking at the wrong year's form. But your situation sounds complicated! Glad you got it resolved.

For everyone experiencing 1099-G issues: the EDD has a dedicated 1099-G phone line that's separate from their regular customer service: 1-866-401-2849. You can also request a corrected form online through your UI Online account. Remember, even if your 1099-G isn't correct by tax filing time, you still need to file your taxes on time - you can file an amended return later if needed. Don't risk penalties by filing late.

THAT NUMBER DOESN'T WORK EITHER!!! I tried it 3 times this week and it just says they're experiencing high call volume and hangs up. The EDD is completely useless.

btw does anyone know if we have to pay taxes on unemployment this year? i thought i heard something about a tax break but maybe that was just during covid??

Yes, unemployment benefits are fully taxable for 2024. The temporary tax break that excluded a portion of unemployment benefits from taxation was only for the 2020 tax year during COVID. For 2024, you need to report and pay taxes on all unemployment compensation you received as shown on your 1099-G.

UPDATE: Problem solved! As someone pointed out, I was looking at my 2023 form instead of 2024. The UI Online interface is really not intuitive. There's a dropdown menu to select the tax year that I completely missed. When I selected 2024, I got the correct form with all my benefit amounts. Thanks everyone for your help!

Glad to hear you got it resolved! This is actually one of the most common issues people face with 1099-G forms. For future reference, EDD typically makes the forms available by January 31st each year, so if you're checking before then, you might not see the correct information.
