Does anyone have a working NY unemployment phone number for the tax advocate office?

I've been trying to reach someone about my tax issues with my benefits for weeks now. My 1099-G form shows I received $3,450 more than I actually got, and now the IRS wants me to pay taxes on money I never received! I've called the regular unemployment line at least 15 times, and they keep transferring me to the tax department, but then I get disconnected. Tried the number listed on the website for the taxpayer advocate but it just rings forever with no answer. Sent emails to three different departments with zero response in the past month. Has anyone successfully reached a human being who can actually fix tax document issues? This is stressing me out since tax deadline is coming up and I can't file with incorrect information.

I'm in the same hell right now. Been trying for 3 weeks to reach someone about my incorrect 1099-G. Shows almost $4k more than I actually received. Every time I call the main line they transfer me and then *click* disconnected. I've started taking screenshots of my call log to document how many times I've tried. Currently at 23 attempts 🤦‍♀️

omg 23 attempts?! I thought my 15 was bad. This is honestly ridiculous. Have you tried emailing them too?

Yep, sent 4 emails. Got one automated response saying they'll get back to me in 5-7 business days. That was 18 days ago 🙃

Try calling exactly at 8:02am. That's when I finally got through last week after trying for days. The queue is shortest right after they open.

After spinning my wheels for weeks with the regular phone lines, I finally got help using claimyr.com - it's a service that calls and waits on hold for you, then rings your phone when a real person picks up. Talking to an agent got my tax issue resolved in one call! Check out this video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

sounds like one of those ads that pops up everywhere. anyone ACTUALLY try this? seems fishy to me...

I get the skepticism - I was hesitant too. But it literally saved me hours of my life. They just call and wait on hold, then connect you when a human answers. Seriously the only way I resolved my issue.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? the unemployment system is SO BROKEN that I'm willing to try anything at this point 😫

It worked for me! Talking to the agent got my tax forms corrected right away. The alternative was me sitting on hold for 3+ hours... again. Best decision I made after weeks of frustration.

I used this last month for a different issue. After 5 failed attempts calling myself, I tried claimyr and got through to someone who fixed my claim that same day. Their worth every penny when ur benefits r on the line.

The NYS Taxpayer Advocate can be reached at 518-530-XXXX but they've been overwhelmed lately. I got through by calling at exactly 8:30am on a Wednesday. Took 7 attempts spread over 2 weeks, but finally got my 1099-G corrected. Keep trying!

Thank you! I'll try that number tomorrow morning. Did they fix your 1099-G right away or did it take time to get corrected?

Took about 10 days to get the corrected form in my online account. The agent I spoke to was actually helpful tho - she confirmed they'd made a mistake on their end.

LOL good luck. Been dealing with this exact issue for 2 months now. NY unemployment tax department is basically a black hole 🕳️ Called 40+ times, sent registered mail, even had my accountant try. Still waiting for a corrected 1099-G with proper amounts.

Here's what worked for me: I submitted a formal complaint through the Governor's office website. Got a call back from a supervisor at unemployment 3 days later who fixed my tax form issue. Sometimes you gotta go over their heads! Try this link: https://www.governor.ny.gov/content/governor-contact-form

THIS!!! 💯 I did something similar by contacting my state representative. Their office has special contacts at unemployment offices and can often cut through the red tape.

Thank you, I'll definitely try this route as well! Didn't even think about going through elected officials.

try 518-457-5181. I reched a real human after only 35 minutes on hold! The key is to call on Tuesday or Thursday between 10-11am. For some reason those days/times have lower call volume from what the agent told me.

That's the old number that doesn't work anymore. They changed their phone system in February.

Here's a comprehensive guide to resolving tax document issues with NY unemployment: First, double-check your payment history in your online account against the 1099-G to identify the specific discrepancy. Take screenshots as evidence. If calling directly, use 888-209-8124, then press 1 for English, then 6 for tax questions. Be prepared to wait 2+ hours. Alternatively, use claimyr.com to have them wait on hold for you (that's what finally worked for me). If that fails, try these escalation paths in this order: 1) Email both ui.customerservice@labor.ny.gov AND 1099G@labor.ny.gov with your documentation 2) File a formal dispute through your online account 3) Contact your state representative or the Governor's office 4) File a complaint with the NY Department of Taxation Don't wait until the last minute since corrected forms can take 2-3 weeks to process. If tax deadline approaches and you still don't have it resolved, file for an extension to avoid penalties. Good luck!

Claimyr was the only thing that worked for me too after weeks of trying. Finally got a real person who could actually help instead of being disconnected for the 100th time lol

File your taxes anyway and include a letter explaining the discrepancy. My accountant said thats whut he does for clients with incorrect 1099-Gs. Then you can amend later if needed. Better than missing the deadline!

I know this feeling all 2 well. The regular unemployment line is useless for tax issues. When they transfer you it goes to the void. I ended up having to file an identity theft form with the IRS because my 1099-G showed benefits I never received!! Check if someone filed for benefits using your SSN. It's happening a lot in NY lately.

Oh no, I didn't even consider identity theft! How do I check if that happened to me? Did you have to file a police report too?

Yeah unfortunately had to file police report AND submit IRS form 14039 (Identity Theft Affidavit). If the amount is WAY off from what you received, definitely check into this possibility.

ive been through this nightmare. after 30+ calls got nowhere. used claimyr.com and finally got through to someone who fixed my 1099 in minutes. they just handle the waiting on hold part and connect you to a live agent when they pick up. worth every penny cuz my tax forms got fixed.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

its literally just a service that waits on hold for you. they dont touch ur personal info or anything. they just call and when a human answers they connect the call to your phone. saved me hours of hold music and getting disconnected.

The ny unemployment system is completly broken. I've been trying for MONTHS to get an advocate or anyone who cares about fixing my tax docs. The IRS says talk to the state, the state gives me the runaround. The whole system is designed to make you give up.

Hey so I'm an accountant and deal with this often. If your dispute isn't resolved by the tax deadline, file Form 4852 as a substitute for the incorrect 1099-G. Attach documentation showing your actual unemployment deposits. The IRS will accept this while you continue fighting with the state.

This is super helpful advice, thank you! I'm going to look up Form 4852 right now. At least this gives me a backup plan if I can't get through to anyone.

Happy to help! Just make sure you have bank statements or other proof of the actual amounts received. The IRS may follow up to verify.

my neighbor werks for unemployment (not tax dept tho) and says they r extremely understaffed right now. like 5 people handling thousands of tax doc issues. its not an excuse but explains why noone answers. he suggested trying claimyr if ur desperate cuz its the only way to guarantee talking to someone.

I get the skepticism, but my neighbor literally told me they're using it internally when they need to reach other departments 😂 The system is THAT broken!

I can believe it. My sister works for a different state agency and said they can never get through to unemployment either. The whole system is a mess.

Just be careful - there's a huge backlog of tax form corrections happening right now. File for an extension if your deadline is coming up soon. I eventually got my corrected 1099-G but it took 6 WEEKS after I finally reached someone.
