Need phone number to reach IRS while waiting on NY unemployment - both systems impossible to reach a human!
So I've been dealing with NY unemployment for 3 months now, and while that's a nightmare on its own, I also need to talk to someone at the IRS about my tax return which affects my unemployment calculation. I've tried calling the main IRS number like 37 times over the past two weeks and can't get through to an actual person. It's always 'due to high call volume' then disconnects me. Does anyone know a direct number or extension that works? Or any tricks to get past their phone system? Dealing with both unemployment and tax issues at the same time is making me lose my mind.

Try calling 1-800-829-1040. When the automated system asks for your SSN, DO NOT ENTER IT. Then press 1 for English, then 2 for tax questions, then 1 for personal tax questions, then 3 for all other questions, then 2 for all other questions again. That should get you to a human eventually, but be prepared to wait at least an hour. Sometimes I've been on hold for 3+ hours.

omg thank you! I'll try this tomorrow morning. Did you have to wait on hold long when you tried this method?

Yeah still had to wait like 90 minutes but at least I got through. Call first thing in the morning like 7:01am when they open!

I was dealing with both IRS and ny unemployment issues last month. Literally couldn't reach either one for weeks. Then I tried this service called Claimyr for unemployment (claimyr.com) and got a callback with a real person who helped resolve my case. Saved me weeks of stress. For the IRS, I ended up making an in-person appointment at my local office which was actually way faster than trying to call. https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? š

No catch - it's a service that calls them for you and waits on hold, then connects you when a human answers. Talking to an agent got my benefits unlocked so fast after weeks of trying myself. Best decision I made during this whole unemployment mess.

wait this sounds interesting. does it work for the IRS too or just unemployment?

I only used it for unemployment but it was the only way I could talk to a live agent after trying for weeks. For IRS I did the in-person appointment route.

I used it last month after being on hold myself for 3 hours and getting disconnected twice. It was the best money I've ever spent to finally get my benefits paid. Had my issues resolved in one call after waiting for months.

The IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service can sometimes help if you're facing financial hardship because of delayed refunds etc. Their number is 1-877-777-4778. They're separate from regular IRS customer service and might be easier to reach.

Both systems are COMPLETELY BROKEN. I spent 6 weeks trying to reach someone at NY unemployment and 3 weeks with IRS. It's like they deliberately make it impossible to talk to a human. America in 2023 y'all! š¤”

THIS!!! I swear they design these systems to make us give up. I've literally been rejected for jobs because my tax transcript is delayed and my unemployment was miscalculated.

fr tho system is designed to be impossible to navigate. And then they have the nerve to say ppl don't want to work š

EXACTLY. And both systems are understaffed on purpose so we just suffer. I hate it here sometimes.

For IRS calls: Call early (7am EST), select language, then press 2-1-3-2 in sequence when prompted. Don't enter your SSN. Wait until tue-thurs if possible, those days have shorter hold times. For unemployment, honestly Claimyr.com saved me weeks of frustration - it was the only way I finally got through after 24+ failed attempts. The whole system is designed to be frustrating and difficult. They count on people giving up. Don't! Your money matters and persistence eventually pays off. Good luck!

Have you tried contacting your local congressperson? Both IRS and unemployment issues can sometimes be resolved through congressional caseworkers.

Yes! Great point - I actually did reach out to my congresswoman's office for the IRS issue after 3 months of nothing. They have special channels and managed to get my refund processed within 2 weeks after I contacted them.

I was in the same situation last month. Here's what worked for me with the IRS: Call 800-829-0922 (the automated collections system) instead of the main number. Press 1, then wait through all the options without selecting any. Eventually it transfers you to a human who can help or transfer you to the right department.

Let me tell you my full experience trying to deal with both these nightmare agencies at once. After 6 weeks of trying to reach NY unemployment with no success and getting disconnected by the IRS 9 times, I was ready to scream. What finally worked: 1) For unemployment - I stopped wasting hours calling and used Claimyr.com. They kept calling, stayed on hold for me, then connected me when a real person answered. Took about 1.5 hours but I finally got my claim fixed. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent. 2) For IRS - I called the Taxpayer Advocate Service (877-777-4778) and explained I was facing financial hardship because of the delays. They assigned me a caseworker who got things moving within days. 3) I also emailed my state representative about both issues as a backup plan. Their office can sometimes cut through red tape. Both systems are designed to wear you down so you'll give up. Don't. Your money matters and there are workarounds to the broken systems if you know where to look.

Appreciate this detailed breakdown! Just curious - did TAS actually resolve your issue or just take info? I've heard mixed experiences.

They actually resolved it! Took about 2 weeks, but my caseworker called me with updates twice and handled everything. Way better than the main IRS line.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this claimyr thing different? I've wasted so much money on 'help' that didn't help

With Claimyr you're not paying for help with your claim - just for them to get through the phone system and connect you to an actual unemployment agent. Then YOU talk to the agent yourself about your specific situation. It just saves you from the calling/waiting nightmare.

I thought the same thing but the claimyr thing legitimately worked for me. Had a real unemployment agent on the phone within an hour after trying for weeks myself.

Another tip for the IRS - if you have a local IRS office, you can make an appointment online. Sometimes in-person is way faster than phone. https://www.irs.gov/help/contact-your-local-irs-office

Have you tried calling your local congressman or representative? Their offices often have connections with both unemployment AND the IRS. I did this last year when I couldn't get through to either and my rep's office fixed both issues within 2 weeks.

Just a heads up - NY unemployment has a separate number for claims with specific issues. Depending on what your problem is, calling that number instead of the main one might be more successful. You can find the different department numbers on their website.
