NY unemployment 1099G access issue after DSS made me file new claim - can't reach anyone by phone

So frustrated right now! DSS told me I had to file a new unemployment claim, which I did. Now I'm trying to access my 1099G for tax purposes and the system is giving me an error message saying I need to call NYSDOL directly. I've been calling non-stop for THREE DAYS and can't get through to a human being. Either get disconnected or stuck in an endless menu loop. Has anyone else dealt with this 1099G access issue after filing a new claim? Did you find a way to actually speak with someone? Tax deadline coming up and I'm starting to panic!

This is actually a common issue with NY unemployment when you file a new claim while still needing access to documents from a previous claim period. The system sometimes restricts access to older documents as a security measure. You have three options: 1. Keep calling but try at non-peak hours (Wednesday-Thursday between 7:30-8:30am or after 4:30pm) 2. Request the 1099G through your NY.gov ID account by going to the document section and specifically requesting an archived document 3. Visit your local career center in person - bring ID and your claim information Option 2 worked for me when I had a similar issue last year.

Thanks for the suggestions! I tried option 2 already and it still directs me to call. I didn't know about the career center option though - might try that tomorrow.

OMG the NYSDOL phone system is THE WORST!!!! I had to call for 2 weeks straight before someone picked up. And then they transferred me and I got disconnected again!!! It's like they're purposely making it impossible to talk to anyone. I feel your pain.

2 WEEKS??? I don't have that kind of time with taxes due soon. This is ridiculous!

I experienced this exact situation in January. The issue is that when you file a new claim, there's a temporary system freeze on accessing old claim documents while they verify there's no overlap or duplicate benefits. The quickest solution is actually to submit a message through your online account's secure messaging center. Be very specific - include your full name, last 4 of SSN, which tax year 1099G you need, and mention that DSS instructed you to file a new claim. They usually respond within 3-5 business days and will either fix the access issue or email you the 1099G directly. While waiting, you can also check if your previous year tax return has the information. If you already received unemployment in the prior year and included it on your taxes, you can use those figures as estimates until you get the official document.

Thank you! I just sent a message through the secure messaging center with all the details you suggested. Fingers crossed they respond quickly. I didn't think about checking last year's return - that's a smart backup plan.

I've been dealing with NYSDOL for years, and honestly, the phone system has only gotten worse in 2025. I was in a similar situation trying to access documents after filing a new claim. After wasting days trying to call, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in about 20 minutes. They actually have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The agent was able to immediately release my 1099G for viewing in my online account. Saved me so much frustration when I was on a deadline for my tax filing.

Have you tried the callback feature on the NYSDOL website? Sometimes it's hidden under 'Contact Options' rather than being obvious. You enter your number and they're supposed to call you back within 48 hours. I say *supposed to* because it's hit or miss. But worth trying alongside the other suggestions here. Also, have you checked if there's an option to download previous 1099Gs directly from the tax document section? Sometimes there's a separate archive section that's not obvious at first glance.

I looked all over for a callback option but couldn't find one! Is there a specific path to get to it? The tax document section just shows a message saying I need to call for previous years when I try to access the 1099G. So frustrating!

Hmm, they must have changed the website again. Last time I used it (about 2 months ago), the callback option was under Account Settings > Contact Preferences > Request Callback. But if you're not seeing it, they might have removed that feature. The NYSDOL seems to constantly change their system without telling anyone! 🤦‍♀️

When DSS told me to file a new claim they shoulda warned me about this document access problem!!! I bet the people at DSS don't even know they're causing problems when they tell people to file new claims. Classic government left hand not knowing what right hand doing ANYWAY I think you can also request 1099G by mail if you can't access online. There's a form somewhere on NYSDOL site but might take 2-3 weeks to arrive so probably not best option if your deadline soon.

UPDATE: I finally got this resolved! I ended up using that Claimyr service that someone mentioned above, and got connected to an agent in about 15 minutes. The agent explained that when DSS had me file a new claim, it created a temporary security hold on my previous claim documents. They removed the hold while I was on the phone, and I was able to access and download my 1099G immediately afterward. For anyone else dealing with this: make sure to explain that DSS directed you to file a new claim. Apparently that's important for them to know when resolving this specific issue. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!

Great to hear you got it resolved! Thanks for updating the thread - this information will help others with similar issues. One thing to remember for future reference: whenever a government agency tells you to take an action that affects unemployment, always ask them specifically how it might impact your access to previous claims or documents. This kind of cross-system issue happens surprisingly often.

The whole system is designed to be frustrating on purpose! They make it hard to talk to anyone hoping people will just give up. Glad you got it fixed but its ridiculous we have to jump through all these hoops for something that should be EASILY ACCESSIBLE!!
