Can't access my 1099-G for ny unemployment tax filing - login keeps failing
So tax season is here and I need my 1099-G form from unemployment benefits I received last year. The problem is I can't login to my account on the NY unemployment website at all. Every time I try to login, it gives me an error saying 'we cannot verify your information at this time.' I've tried resetting my password at least 6 times since February, but nothing works. I've called the main number literally 30+ times but can never get through to a human being. Just lots of automated messages and then disconnects. My tax appointment is in two weeks and I'm starting to panic. Has anyone else had trouble accessing their 1099-G? Is there another way to get this form without logging in? The IRS is gonna come after me if I don't report this income correctly but I can't get the document I need!

Dude I had the same exact issue trying to get my 1099G. After banging my head against the wall for days, I finally found this service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual human at unemployment. They basically call for you and then connect you when someone picks up. Talking to an agent got my tax form sent to me within days - it was the only way I could talk to a live agent. Best money I ever spent to avoid IRS trouble. Check them out: claimyr.com Also here's a video that explains it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•yeah it totally works! I was super skeptical at first but I was desperate. They called and stayed on hold so I didn't have to, then my phone rang when they got a person. No more busy signals or dropped calls!

•I thought the same thing but it literally saved me from missing my tax deadline. I was at my wits end after trying for weeks. Just sharing what worked for me 🤷♂️

•hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

•they dont ask for any of your personal unemployment info - they just make the call and connect you when someone answers. then you handle everything yourself with the agent. that's why i felt comfortable using it

•I used them last month when I couldn't get my backpay. Was on hold for like 2 hours with them but still better than the 37 calls I made on my own that got me nowhere

I had this same problem. What worked for me was going to my local library and using their computer. For some reason the NY unemployment site sometimes has issues with certain browsers/devices. The librarian helped me print everything too. Worth a shot before your appointment!

•That's actually a really smart idea, didn't think of that. I'll try the library tomorrow, thanks!

•This! Their website is straight out of 2005. It works better on Internet Explorer which tells you everything you need to know 🤣

The most comprehensive way to solve your 1099-G problem with NY unemployment: 1. First, try requesting it by mail instead of online. Call 1-888-209-8124 and use the automated system to request a paper copy. This sometimes works even if you can't log in. 2. If that fails, you can submit a written request to: NYS DOL, PO Box 1975, Albany NY 12201. Include your full name, last 4 of SSN, mailing address and phone number. 3. Visit your nearest NY Career Center in person - they often can help with account issues and print forms on the spot. Bring ID! 4. For immediate help, use claimyr.com to get connected to a live agent. Many of us here have had success with this when all else fails. 5. If you absolutely can't get it before filing taxes, you can still file using your best estimate of unemployment income from bank statements. Then file an amended return later when you get the exact amount. Don't panic - the IRS is generally understanding about documentation issues with government agencies as long as you make a good faith effort to report accurately.

•This is super helpful, thank you! I hadn't thought about estimating the amount from my bank statements - smart backup plan.

NY unemployment is the WORST. Their website is always broken, their phone lines are always busy, and nobody seems to care. I had to file my taxes late last year because of this exact issue. The government creates these problems and then penalizes US for them. It's absolute BS.

Have you tried contacting your state representative? When I had a similar issue they were actually really helpful and could escalate things. Just Google your district and reach out to their office.

•I hadn't considered that route. Do you just call their office or is there a specific way to contact them for unemployment issues?

•Just call their main office number and explain the situation. They usually have staff that handles constituent services specifically for govt problems like this. They helped me get my issue fixed in about a week!

•This is the way. I got nowhere for months until I contacted my assembly person. They have special contacts at these agencies.

you can also request your 1099-G by email! send your full name, last four of ssn, and mailing address to 1099G@labor.ny.gov - they'll send you a copy. might take a week or two but it does work

•i wouldn't recommend emailing your SSN, even partial. email isnt secure

•It's just the last 4 digits which is standard practice for most agencies. But yeah, if youre worried about it, the mail option others mentioned is safer

•Thanks for the suggestion! I might try this if the other options don't work out quickly enough.

I feel your pain... the exact same thing happened to me in march. the only thing that worked was using claimyr.com to get through to someone on the phone. once i got a real person they fixed my account AND emailed me the 1099G that same day

If your trying to file taxes without the 1099-G, you can look at your bank statements and add up all the deposits from "NYS DOL" for last year. That's what my accountant had me do when I couldn't get mine. Not ideal but it works in a pinch!

•This is what I did too. As long as you're close it's fine, and then amend later if needed.

The NY unemployment website is GARBAGE 🗑️ It's like they purposely make it difficult so people give up trying to get benefits or documents. I bet they save millions by making the system so frustrating that people just walk away.

•100% this. It's not an accident, it's by design. They don't want to pay us.

Try clearing your cache and cookies or using incognito mode. Sometimes their website has issues with saved login data. Worked for me when I had similar problems.

•I tried all that already 😩 Even tried on my phone, tablet, and laptop. Same error message every time.

LPT: file an extension with the IRS while you sort this out. Form 4868 gives you until October to file your return. Better than filing incorrect info or missing the deadline altogether.

A friend works for the DOL and told me they're super understaffed right now. Your best bet is either showing up in person at an office (bring ID and prepare to wait) or using a service like claimyr to get through the phone lines.

wait why do u even need a 1099G? I never report my unemployment on my taxes and never had a problem

•ARE YOU SERIOUS? Unemployment is 100% taxable income. The IRS gets a copy of your 1099-G. If you haven't been audited yet, consider yourself lucky 😬

If u have a tax preparer like H&R Block they can sometimes request the 1099G info directly from the IRS database. Costs extra but worth it in this situation.

•I didn't know that was an option! I'll ask my tax person about this. Thanks!

Try calling RIGHT when they open at 8am. I got through after only 20 minutes on hold that way. Any other time of day is basically impossible.
