Can't access NY unemployment 1099-G form while abroad - website access issues

I've been living outside the US for almost a year now, and tax season is approaching. I need to get my 1099-G form from the NY unemployment website, but I can't seem to access the Department of Labor site at all. Every time I try to log in, I either get an error message or the page won't load completely. Is anyone else having trouble accessing the NY unemployment website right now? Or is this happening because I'm connecting from outside the country? I really need this tax document and don't know what to do!

The NY DOL website does have geographic restrictions and security measures that can block access from foreign IP addresses. This is to prevent fraud. Your overseas location is almost certainly the issue. You have a few options: 1. Use a VPN service with US servers to make it appear you're connecting from the US 2. Ask a trusted family member in the US to access it for you (though sharing login credentials has security risks) 3. Contact NYSDOL directly through their phone system to request they mail your 1099-G I'd recommend option #3 as the most official and secure solution.

Thanks for confirming it's probably my location! I was hoping that wasn't the case. I've tried calling their number several times but can never get through to a real person - just endless automated messages. The time difference makes it even harder since I'm 7 hours ahead. Do they have an email address where I can request the 1099-G be mailed?

I had the EXACT same problem last year when I was staying in Europe for a few months!! The DOL website totally blocks foreign IPs - it's super frustrating. I wasted so much time trying different browsers and clearing cache before figuring it out. I ended up using Claimyr to get through to an actual agent (claimyr.com) - they got me connected with someone who arranged to mail my 1099-G to my US address. Check out their demo video if you're curious how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE. Saved me hours of frustration with the phone system!

I've never heard of Claimyr before. So they help you get through to an actual human at unemployment? That sounds exactly what I need right now. I'll check out that video. Did they mail the form quickly once you got through to someone?

Yeah, once I actually spoke to a person, they were super helpful! The agent verified my identity, confirmed my mailing address, and sent the 1099-G out within a few days. It took about 10 days total to arrive at my US address. Just make sure you have somewhere in the US they can send it to.

True that. Their site goes down for maintenance ALL the time too. I swear they always pick the exact moment I need to certify 🙄

There's actually an official process for requesting your 1099-G if you can't access it online. Call the NYSDOL Tax Form Request Line at 1-877-342-0841. You'll need your NY.gov ID, SSN, and a mailing address where they can send it. It typically takes 7-10 business days to arrive. You can also make the request in writing to: NYS Department of Labor PO Box 1264 Albany, NY 12201 Be sure to include your full name, last 4 digits of your SSN, and the tax year you need (2025 for the current tax season).

Thank you for the detailed info! I'll try the Tax Form Request Line tomorrow during NY business hours. Hopefully I can get through. If not, I'll send a written request to that PO Box address. Appreciate the help!

Have you tried using a different browser? Sometimes their website acts weird on Chrome but works fine on Edge or Firefox. Also try clearing your cookies and cache first before giving up!

While browser issues can sometimes affect website functionality, in this case the problem is almost certainly due to geographic IP restrictions. The NY unemployment portal has security measures specifically designed to block connections from outside the US as an anti-fraud measure.

The NY DOL is DELIBERATELY making it difficult to access your information!!! They KNOW people need these tax documents but they put up all these barriers. I've been dealing with their nonsense for YEARS and it never improves. The whole system is designed to frustrate people so they'll give up trying to get what they're entitled to. It's disgusting how they treat us after we've paid into the system our whole working lives!!!!

The geographic IP restrictions are actually a security measure to prevent fraud, not to make things difficult. Unemployment fraud is a serious issue that costs billions annually. While the system certainly has flaws and can be frustrating, these particular security measures serve an important purpose in protecting both the system and claimants.

UPDATE: I was able to get through to someone at NY unemployment! I used the Claimyr service that someone suggested earlier and got connected to an agent within 25 minutes (which is miraculous compared to my previous attempts). The agent confirmed they can mail my 1099-G to my parents' address in New York. They said it should arrive within 7-10 business days. Just wanted to update in case anyone else has a similar issue. Thanks everyone for your help!

Glad you were able to get it resolved! For future reference, you can also request that they email you a PDF version of your 1099-G if you're still abroad when next year's tax season comes around. You'll need to specifically ask for this option as they don't always offer it upfront, but many agents can do this with supervisor approval if you explain your situation.
