Can I access my ny unemployment 1099-G while traveling abroad?

So I'm currently traveling overseas and realized I need to get my tax documents for filing. I can't access my unemployment account to download my 1099-G form. Every time I try to log in from here (Thailand), the site seems to block me or gives me an error. Has anyone successfully accessed their NY unemployment account from another country? Is this a security feature or just bad luck with the website? I really need that form for my taxes and won't be back stateside for another 2 months. Any workarounds?

I had the same issue when I was in Mexico last year. Its definitely a security thing - they block foreign IP addresses to prevent fraud. Your best bet is to use a VPN that has US servers. I used NordVPN and connected to a New York server, worked perfectly after that.

Thank you! I'll try that. Any specific VPN you'd recommend that worked well for you?

I've used both NordVPN and ExpressVPN with good results. Just make sure to connect to a NY server specifically, as sometimes connecting to other states can still trigger their security.

VPNs can be sketchy tho. Be careful what you download, lots of fake ones out there that just steal your data 👀

True, stick with the well-known ones. And dont use free VPNs for anything important like unemployment!

After trying for weeks to access my account while overseas, I found a service called claimyr.com that helps with all kinds of NY unemployment issues including accessing your account from abroad. They actually helped me get through to a live person who unlocked my account for international access. Best money I ever spent to get my tax docs sorted without waiting til I got home. Check them out here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

This sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this service?

I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying everything. The service connects you with actual unemployment reps who can override the system blocks. Worth it for the peace of mind.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

0 coins

The difference is they don't do anything with your account themselves - they just get you connected with an actual NYSDOL rep. You talk directly to the government person who can help.

not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these never work

So I used this service last month when my account was locked. It's basically just a way to skip the phone wait times. Talking to the actual agent got my issue fixed in like 5 minutes after weeks of frustration.

You can also request them to mail the 1099-G to your address on file. Call the ny unemployment tax form request line at 1-877-329-8969. Have your ssn, zip code ready. They might be able to email it too if you explain your situation.

Why not just have someone you trust in the US log in for you? Give them your info (if you trust them) and have them download the PDF and email it to you. That's what I did when I was stuck in Europe last year.

I thought about that but wasn't sure if that would violate any terms of service. Don't want to risk any issues with my account.

Technically youre right, its probably against TOS. But realistically, how would they even know? Just don't broadcast it lol.

Bad advice. Identity theft is no joke. Never give your login info to anyone - even family members. Too risky.

The system is DESIGNED to be impossible from overseas. They do this on purpose to prevent fraud from international scammers. Your only real options are a solid VPN or getting someone to help you reach an actual human who can override the block. I was in Brazil for 3 months and went through this nightmare.

This 100% ☝️ NY unemployment system treats everyone like a criminal these days

wait hold up - does this VPN thing actually work or is it just the usual BS?

VPN worked for me about 60% of the time. Sometimes the site would still know somehow. If VPN fails, contacting a rep is your only option.

I work in IT and can explain what's happening. The NY unemployment site uses geofencing to block foreign IPs as a security measure. Your options are: 1. Use a reliable VPN with US-based servers (NordVPN, ExpressVPN, etc) 2. Call the dedicated tax document line (though international calls can be expensive) 3. Use a service like claimyr.com to connect with an agent who can override the restriction 4. Request mail delivery of your 1099-G through the automated phone system 5. If you have a trusted friend/family in the US, set up a remote desktop session (TeamViewer, etc) and have them navigate while you watch - this way you're not sharing credentials The system is frustrating but these blocks exist because of the massive fraud that happened during the pandemic. Hope this helps!

This is super helpful, thank you! Will try the VPN route first and then maybe the claimyr option if that doesn't work.

The remote desktop idea is genius! Never thought of that - lets you control everything without sharing passwords.

just wait till you get back tbh. too much hassle and not worth risking account security issues. the IRS will understand if you file a bit late with explanation.

Bad advice. IRS doesn't care about your travel plans. File on time or pay penalties.

You can file for an extension tho... 🙄

True but you still gotta PAY what you owe by the deadline even with extension.

Okay so I literally just dealt with this exact situation last week!!!! I'm in Costa Rica right now and needed my 1099-G. The VPN didn't work for me cause they have other ways of detecting foreign access. What DID work was using claimyr.com to get me through to an actual person at unemployment who manually sent me my 1099-G via email. Took like 20 minutes total. The phone service was great for connecting me directly to someone who could help!!

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol

Call it what you want but I've got my 1099-G now so 🤷‍♀️ sometimes you just need the right tool for the job

am I the only one who plans ahead for this stuff? I always download ALL my tax docs before international travel. lesson learned I guess

Not helpful but thanks for the lecture 🙄 Sometimes trips come up unexpectedly.

fair enough. didn't mean to be a jerk. hope you get your docs!

This happens to me every time I visit family in India. NY unemployment hates when people travel lol. Biggest hack I found is using a friends phone in the US - have them hotspot to their computer and then do a zoom screen share while you tell them what to click. Weird workaround but it works!

Hey, the NY Dept of Labor has a specific email for 1099-G requests if you can't access online. Try emailing 1099G@labor.ny.gov with your full name, last 4 of SSN, and current mailing address. Explain you're traveling. They usually respond within 5-7 business days.

This is great info, thank you! Will try this route too.

I tried this in December. They replied asking for ID verification and then ghosted me for 3 weeks. YMMV 🤷‍♂️

They're definitely hit or miss. Depends who gets your email I guess.
