Can I access my NY unemployment 1099-G from another country? Need tax docs while abroad

I'm currently traveling outside the US (will be gone for a few months) and just realized I need my 1099-G form from NY unemployment for my taxes. Can I access my unemployment account and download my 1099-G while I'm in another country? The NYSDOL website seems to detect I'm not in the US and I'm worried about security blocks. Has anyone successfully logged in from abroad? Any tips would be appreciated!

Yep, foreign IP addresses often get blocked for NY govt websites as security measure. U might need VPN to make it look like ur in the US. Worked for me when I was in Mexico last yr.

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm not very tech savvy - what VPN would you recommend that's simple to use? And is it legal to use a VPN for accessing my own tax documents?

You can definitely access your NY.gov account from abroad, but you may face some security challenges. Here's what you need to know: 1. Many government sites have geoblocking for security purposes 2. You may need to complete additional verification steps 3. If you're completely locked out, you can request your 1099-G by email To request by email, contact NYSDOL at 1099G@labor.ny.gov with your full name, last 4 of SSN, phone number, and mailing address. They can email you a secure copy. For direct portal access, a reputable VPN service is completely legal for accessing your own accounts and documents.

Thank you for the detailed information! I'll try the email option first since it seems simplest. If I email them, do you know roughly how long it takes to get a response? My tax deadline is coming up.

I had the same problem last year when I was visiting family in Europe!! So frustrating. I emailed that address they mentioned above and it took FOREVER (like 3 weeks) to get a response. And then they asked for more verification documents which was a whole other headache.

Oh no, 3 weeks is too long for me! My accountant needs this ASAP. Looks like I might need to try the VPN route after all.

I work with unemployment systems regularly, and there's actually a direct phone line for 1099-G assistance: 1-877-280-4541. This is specifically for tax document requests. Calling is usually faster than email. If you're struggling to reach an agent (which is common), I've had clients use Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to NY unemployment without waiting for hours. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Regarding VPNs: Yes, it's completely legal to use a VPN to access your own government accounts. NordVPN and ExpressVPN are user-friendly options with good mobile apps if you're not tech-savvy.

When I was in Canada last month I could access my NY.gov account but not the unemployment section specifically. Had to use my cousin's address and wifi when I got back to Buffalo. Weird system they have. Good luck!

Has anyone tried using their phone instead of computer? Maybe if you use mobile data instead of foreign wifi it might work?

Mobile data will still show a foreign IP address if you're connecting from outside the US. The carrier identification actually makes geolocation even more precise. The security protocols are checking your connection origin, not the device type.

I dont understand why these government sites make EVERYTHING so difficult!! It's YOUR information and YOUR tax documents that YOU need for filing taxes THEY require! The whole system is broken and backwards!!!!

I tried that Claimyr service someone mentioned above when I was having problems with my claim last month. It actually worked pretty well - got through to a real person in about 20 minutes instead of trying for days. The rep was able to email me my 1099-G right away once I verified my identity. Might be worth it if you're running out of time.

Thank you for sharing your experience! I might try that route since it sounds like the most direct solution and I'm running short on time. Did you have to provide any special documentation to get them to email the 1099-G?

They just asked for the standard verification - last 4 of SSN, address on file, and date of birth. Had to answer a couple security questions too. Pretty straightforward once I actually got through to someone.

Just to follow up on your timeline concern - if you're unable to get your 1099-G in time for filing, you can request an extension from the IRS using Form 4868. This gives you an additional 6 months to file (though not to pay if you owe taxes). Then you'll have plenty of time to secure the proper documentation.

Thanks for mentioning that option! I'm hoping to avoid an extension if possible, but it's good to know I have that as a backup plan. I think I'll try calling with that Claimyr service first, and if that doesn't work, I'll go the extension route.
