Can't access NY unemployment 1099-G form and taxes due soon - what are my options?

I've been trying for MONTHS to download my 1099-G form from the NY unemployment website and it's just not working at all! Every time I log in and try to access the tax documents section, it either crashes or says 'service unavailable'. Tax deadline is coming up on April 15/18 and I'm freaking out. I've called the Department of Labor literally 30+ times and can never get through to a real person. Just endless hold music or disconnects. What are my options at this point? Can I still file my taxes without the 1099-G? Will I need to file for an extension? This is so frustrating!

You definitely have options here! First, try requesting the 1099-G through the automated phone system at 888-209-8124. If that doesn't work, you can file for a tax extension using Form 4868 which gives you until October 15, 2025. That should give you plenty of time to get the form. You can also estimate your unemployment income from your bank statements if you received direct deposits. The DOL should have sent the 1099-G by mail as well - did you check if they mailed you a paper copy?

Thanks for the suggestions! I never got anything in the mail (checked carefully) and the automated phone system just keeps transferring me back to the main menu when I select the tax document option. I guess I'll have to file for an extension. :( Do you know if there are any penalties for filing late even with an extension?

It's ridiculous right? Have you figured out any solution yet? I'm getting desperate with the deadline so close.

I had this exact same issue last month. The website wasn't working and I couldn't get through on the phones for weeks. After trying everything, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and actually got through to a DOL agent in about 20 minutes. They were able to send my 1099-G to my email while I was on the phone with them. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE It was such a relief to finally get the form and be able to file my taxes. Much better than having to file an extension and worry about it for another 6 months.

I've never heard of Claimyr before. Did you really get through that quickly? I've been on hold for hours multiple times with no luck. I'll check out that video, thanks!

sounds 2 good 2 be true tbh. does it actually work?

This happens EVERY SINGLE YEAR with NYSDOL!! The system is deliberately broken to make it harder for people to file taxes properly. I've been dealing with their incompetence for years. Last year I had to file THREE amendments because they kept sending corrected 1099-Gs after I already filed. The website crashes constantly during tax season because they don't invest in proper servers or IT support. Your best bet is to keep calling until you get through or file an extension and try again in May when their systems aren't as overwhelmed.

While I understand your frustration, filing an extension is definitely the safest approach if you can't get the form in time. There's no penalty for filing with an extension as long as you've paid any estimated taxes owed by the original April deadline.

Have you tried logging in super early in the morning? Like 5am? That's when I finally got my 1099-G to download. The website seems to work better when fewer people are using it. Also, check your spam/junk folder - sometimes they email it and it gets filtered out.

I haven't tried that early - good idea! I'll set an alarm for tomorrow morning and see if that works. Already checked all my email folders including spam but nothing there unfortunately.

my brother had this problem to. he said he had to go to the office in person to get it printed out. maybe try that?

Going in person doesn't work anymore unless you have an appointment, and guess what? You can only make appointments BY PHONE! It's a complete catch-22 designed to frustrate people into giving up.

i think u can estimate ur income on taxes and then amend later when u get the form. thats what my tax guy told me to do last year when i had a similar issue. just make sure u dont underreport or ull get penalized.

This is actually reasonable advice. If you have your bank statements showing deposits from NYSDOL, you can use those to estimate your unemployment income. Just be aware that this doesn't show tax withholding, if any was taken out. Filing with your best estimate and then amending later when you get the official 1099-G is a valid approach.

After trying Claimyr that I mentioned earlier, I got through to an agent who told me there's actually another option - you can request a duplicate 1099-G through your NY.gov ID account under "Unemployment Services" and then "Get Your NYS 1099-G". It's a different path than the regular tax documents section. Have you tried that specific route?

I just tried your suggestion and it worked!!! I was able to download my 1099-G through that alternate path! Thank you so much for this tip - you saved me from having to file an extension. I don't know why they make this so complicated with multiple ways to access the same document.

ok i just tried that other way too and it worked for me too!! finally got my form after months of trying the wrong way i guess. this system is so confusing!!

I'm so glad it worked for you too! What a relief to finally have this sorted out.

Glad to see you got your form! For anyone else reading this thread with the same issue: 1. Try the alternate path through NY.gov ID → Unemployment Services → Get Your NYS 1099-G 2. Try early morning or late night when server traffic is lower 3. If those don't work, file an extension (Form 4868) by April 18, 2025 4. You can also request the form via the automated phone system 5. If all else fails, estimating from bank statements and amending later is an option Hope this helps future tax filers!

Thank you for summarizing everything! This will definitely help others who run into the same problem.
