Can't access my 1099G after filing new claim - NY unemployment phone system is impossible
Filed a new unemployment claim last month because my DSS caseworker said I had to. Now I'm trying to get my tax documents together and when I try to access my 1099G on the website, it keeps giving me an error telling me to call customer service. I've been calling for almost 2 weeks straight and can't get through to anyone. Either get disconnected automatically or stuck on hold for hours until the system hangs up on me. Tax deadline coming up soon and I really need this document. Has anyone else had this problem or know how to actually talk to a real person?

Welcome to the ny unemployment hellscape 🙃 I had the exact same issue back in February. Tried for THREE WEEKS to get my 1099G. The website is completely useless and the phone system is designed to make you give up.

•Did you ever get your form? What finally worked?

•Yeah I eventually got it. Had to call at exactly 7:58am right before they open. Still waited 45 mins but at least got through.

•That 7:58 trick is hit or miss. I tried it 4 days in a row and still got nowhere. System is broken beyond repair.

After weeks of being stuck in the same situation, I tried this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that basically waits on hold for you then calls you when a real agent picks up. Worked like magic - got my 1099G issue resolved in one day after trying for weeks on my own. Best thing I spent money on all year considering how much I need those tax docs! Here's a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•This sounds sus af... does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•Not a scam at all. I was desperate after trying for like 3 weeks straight. They just hold your place in line and then connect you when someone answers. Saved me hours of waiting on hold.

•wait so you just pay them to wait on hold instead of you? that's kinda genius ngl

•another day, another unemployment 'miracle solution'... what makes this any different from the other garbage services?

•The difference is it actually worked lol. I was skeptical too but I got my tax forms the same day after weeks of nothing. They don't solve your problem - they just get you to a real person who can.

if u need a workaround you can estimate your unemployment income from your bank statements and file anyway. Then do an amended return later when u finally get the 1099G. Not ideal but better than missing the deadline and getting hit with penalties 🤷♂️

I've been a tax preparer for 7 years and deal with this NY unemployment nonsense EVERY SINGLE YEAR. The system is fundamentally broken. If you need immediate help, try contacting your state representative's office. They often have direct lines to unemployment office management and can help expedite document requests. I've had clients get results within 48 hours this way.

•Thanks for the tip! Any specific way to approach contacting the state rep? Should I email or call their office?

•Definitely call first, then follow up with an email that includes your contact info and claim number (if you have it). Be polite but emphasize the tax deadline urgency. Most reps have staffers dedicated to unemployment issues.

NYSDOL is a complete joke. Their whole setup is designed to frustrate people into giving up. I literally called 47 times in one day last month trying to get my 1099G (kept track on a notepad lol). Never got through. Eventually went to the physical office and STILL got sent home without help.

•Wait there's a physical office you can go to?? Where??

•There's a few NYS Career Centers that sometimes have DOL staff. But don't waste your time - they just tell you to use the website or call the same number we're all trying 🤡

Here's what worked for me to get my 1099G: First, try the technical support line instead of the regular unemployment line - sometimes there's less wait and they can transfer you. Second, request a callback through the website (doesn't always work but worth trying). Third, try calling right at 7:30am before they're technically open. Fourth, if all else fails, I recommend trying claimyr.com - they basically wait on hold for you and call when a real person answers. Worked perfectly for me after weeks of frustration. Lastly, contact your state assembly member or senator - their offices can sometimes expedite your request. Don't give up! The system is designed to make you quit, but persistence pays off eventually. Good luck!

•Can vouch for the state rep approach. My assemblywoman's office got me through in 2 days after I spent 3 weeks getting nowhere.

•Yeah it worked great for me! Literally had been trying for 3 weeks with no luck, then had my issue resolved same day using their service. I was skeptical too but was desperate to get my tax docs.

Have u tried looking for the 1099G in your message center on the website instead of where they normally keep em? For some reason mine showed up there this year instead of in the tax documents section 🤷♀️

FYI you can file for a tax extension if you're still waiting on your 1099G. Gives you until October to get everything sorted. Just make sure you PAY any estimated taxes by the regular deadline to avoid penalties.

•Good point, might have to do this as a last resort

Ok so hear me out - this might sound weird but try calling from a different phone number if you can. I was getting automatically rejected for WEEKS then borrowed my mom's phone and got through on my second try. I think their system tracks your number and deprioritizes frequent callers 🤔

•Wait is this actually a thing? That's messed up if true

•No idea if its official but it worked for me. Tried calling 50+ times from my cell = nothing. Called twice from my mom's phone = got through. Too coincidental.

•That's some conspiracy theory stuff but honestly wouldn't put it past NY unemployment at this point 😅

Try this special number that sometimes works for document requests: [redacted for privacy]. It's not the main line but connects to the same department. It's been working better for some ppl recently

•This number doesn't work anymore. Tried it twice today and got automated message saying it's no longer in service

Not to be that person, but why did DSS tell you to file a new claim? That sometimes causes issues with accessing old docs since the system treats you as a new claimant. Did they explain why you needed to file again?

•My benefits had ended about 8 months ago, but I'm still getting some assistance through DSS. During my recertification appointment they told me I needed to file for unemployment again to show I wasn't eligible before they could continue my benefits.

•Ah that makes sense. Classic bureaucratic mess - one agency requires you to do something that causes problems with another agency. Good luck getting it sorted!

I'm an accountant and deal with this every year. If you absolutely can't get your 1099-G, you can fill out Form 4852 (Substitute for Form 1099-G) and attach it to your return. You'll need to estimate your unemployment compensation as accurately as possible from bank statements.

Unpopular opinion but try looking for your 1099G on the IRS website directly through their transcript service. Sometimes they have it even when the state won't give it to you.
