Anyone else struggling to get their 1099-G from NY unemployment?
So frustrated with this whole tax season thing. I've been trying to get my 1099-G since early February but keep hitting roadblocks. I moved apartments in November and updated my address on the portal, but somehow the system shows my old address. When I logged into my account last week, I tried to request a copy of my 1099-G but kept getting an error message saying "system currently unavailable." Called the automated line about 20 times and it just disconnects me. Tried emailing them twice with no response after 3 weeks. I need this form to file my taxes! Has anyone actually managed to get their 1099-G mailed to them this year? My tax person is getting really annoyed with me and I might have to file an extension if I can't get this sorted soon.

I'm in the exact same situation! Been waiting since mid January for my 1099-G. The online portal keeps giving me errors and when I call the automated system it just hangs up on me after the menu options. Starting to wonder if they even sent them out this year.

•It's beyond frustrating! Did you also move recently? I'm wondering if that's what's causing the issue.

•Nope, same address for 3 years now. I think their system is just broken. Like everything else with ny unemployment 🤦♂️

After spending WEEKS trying to get through to someone at unemployment, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it was a game changer. They got me connected to a live agent within 30 minutes who was able to manually request my 1099-G be mailed out. Talking to that agent saved me hours of frustration and got my tax docs faster than I thought possible. Check out this video that explains how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Is this for real? Sounds too good to be true honestly. The NYSDOL phone system is basically designed to keep you on hold forever.

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Was about to file an extension but the agent I talked to fixed everything in like 10 minutes. Best decision I made this tax season.

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I've tried calling like 50 times already 😩

•Yeah it works! The difference is they have some tech that keeps dialing and stays on hold for you, then calls your phone when a real person picks up. My 1099-G showed up in the mail 5 days after I talked to someone.

Here's a trick I used - request it through the messaging center on your account. Go to your online account, click on messages, then start a new message. Choose "Tax Form" from the dropdown menu. Ask them specifically to mail a paper copy to your current address (make sure to provide your CURRENT address in the message). I did this and got mine in about 10 days. Also screenshot everything just in case!

I had the same issue with the portal showing my old address even tho I updated it months ago! So infuriating. What worked for me was calling the tax form specific number (888-209-8124) and pressing 2 then 5 then 2 again. You have to call super early though like 7:55am right before they open. That's the only way I got through.

•Thanks for the tip! What time do they open? I'll try this tomorrow morning.

•They open at 8am. But seriously call at 7:55 and wait in the queue. If you call after 8:05 you probably wont get thru. Good luck!

OMG THE NY UNEMPLOYMENT SYSTEM IS SUCH TRASH 🗑️ I literally had to file my taxes without the 1099-G and now I'm probably gonna get audited or something. Been waiting since JANUARY. The whole system is designed to make you give up.

•Don't file without it! You'll definitely get a notice from the IRS. Just file an extension instead, it's free and gives you till October.

•Too late lol. Already filed. My tax guy just estimated based on my bank deposits. We'll see what happens I guess 🤷♀️

Pro tip for anyone still struggling: If you collected unemployment last year, you should be able to see your 1099-G online. Log in to your NY.gov ID account, go to My Online Services, then Unemployment Services, then View 1099-G Information. You can print it directly from there if the mailing system is failing you. Worked for me after 3 failed attempts to get it by mail.

•I tried that but keep getting an error message whenever I click on View 1099-G Information. Just says "system unavailable at this time" 😡

•Dang that sucks. Their website is so hit or miss. Maybe try a different browser? I had to use Firefox because Chrome kept giving me errors.

I've dealt with unemployment for 3 years now and here's what I've learned about these tax form issues: 1. Their online system is consistently broken during tax season because everyone tries to access it at once 2. Phone lines are deliberately understaffed - they literally don't have enough people to handle the call volume 3. The most reliable way to get ACTUAL help is to speak with a live agent who can override the system issues I wasted weeks trying to get my tax forms using "official" channels before finding claimyr.com. It's a service that calls unemployment for you, stays on hold, then connects you when a real person answers. Worth every penny because the agent I spoke with was able to immediately see that my address was wrong in their system (despite me updating it online) and manually triggered a new 1099-G to be sent. The frustrating part is that once you actually talk to a person, these issues are usually fixed in minutes. It's GETTING to that person that's nearly impossible without help. Also - file an extension if you're still waiting! It's free and gives you until October to get this sorted out.

•yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

Savanna Franklin
•No catch - it just saves you from spending hours on hold. You still talk to the same NY unemployment agents, but without the holding part. My experience was totally worth it - got my tax issue resolved in one call.

•hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

•The difference is you're not giving them any personal info - they just handle the calling and holding part, then connect you directly to the agent. You're the one who talks to unemployment. Saved me hours of frustration.

I gave up and went to my local Department of Labor office in person. Waited 2 hours but at least got someone to print my 1099-G right there. Sometimes you gotta do it the old fashioned way when tech fails.

•Which office did you go to? Didn't know you could do this in person!

•I went to the one in downtown Brooklyn. Just bring ID and they can look it up. The wait was brutal but better than the endless phone game.

For anyone in this situation: you can actually download your 1099-G from the IRS website directly! Go to irs.gov, create an account (or login), go to Tax Records, then Get Transcript Online, then choose Return Transcript, and your 1099-G info should be there even if NY unemployment is being useless.

•This doesn't work if you haven't filed taxes yet and are waiting on the 1099-G to file...

•True good point. It only works for getting last year's info, not current year. My bad!

Does anyone else feel like they deliberately make this difficult? Like they dont WANT us to be able to file our taxes correctly? The whole unemployment system in NY is just set up to frustrate ppl so they give up on getting benefits they're entitled to.

•100% this. They know exactly what they're doing. Make the system broken enough that a percentage of people just give up. Saves them money.

•THIS!!! I've been saying this for years. The inefficiency is by design.

I had the EXACT same issue with my address being wrong despite updating it. So annoying. After like 50 calls I finally got through to a human who told me that address changes for 1099-G specifically have to be done by DECEMBER 15th for tax forms!!! Nobody tells you this! If you change your address after that date, it doesn't apply to tax forms being mailed out. Such a stupid system.

Friendly reminder that you can file your taxes WITHOUT the 1099-G if you know how much you received in benefits. Just report that amount on your tax return. The 1099-G is just for verification, but you don't technically need the physical form to file.

•This isn't completely accurate. You need the 1099-G to know the amount of taxes they withheld, if any. Otherwise you might overpay on your taxes.

•Good point, forgot about the withholding part. That would be important to know.

Not to be that person, but this is why I always screenshot EVERYTHING related to ny unemployment. Payment amounts, confirmation numbers, correspondence, everything. Their system is so broken that you need your own records.

So I was about to throw my phone after 3 hours on hold when my friend told me about claimyr.com - at first I was like "yeah whatever another scam" but I was desperate. Turns out it actually connected me to an agent who helped me! They have this thing where they call FOR you and then ring YOUR phone when they get through. The agent I talked to said they're getting tons of 1099-G issues calls right now and manually requested mine be sent. Got it last week!

•I get the skepticism, I was the same way. But it literally just handles the hold time for you. The only thing I regret is all the hours I wasted trying to call them myself before using it.

•How long did it take to get a callback? Been trying to reach them for weeks

•I got the call in about 40 minutes. Way faster than I expected honestly. And then the agent fixed my 1099-G issue in like 5 minutes. Such a relief after weeks of stress.

I think there's actually a major glitch in their system this year. My neighbor and I both had the same issue - updated addresses not showing up correctly. My theory is they're using an old database for the tax forms that doesn't sync with address updates properly.

Whatever you do, don't miss the tax filing deadline waiting for this form! File an extension NOW if you haven't gotten your 1099-G yet. It's free to file an extension and gives you 6 more months. Just go to irs.gov and fill out Form 4868.

•Extension is the way to go. Just remember you still have to PAY what you estimate you owe by the regular deadline, the extension is just for filing the paperwork.

Just wanna say THANK YOU to whoever recommended claimyr. After reading this thread yesterday I decided to try it and actually got through to someone who helped me! They said my address was showing differently in two different parts of their system (wat???) and that's why my 1099-G went to my old place. Agent sent a new one and gave me a confirmation number to track it. FINALLY some progress after months of frustration!
