ESD reported wrong tax years on my 1099-G forms - how to fix for IRS reporting?
I'm freaking out a bit about my taxes right now. I received unemployment benefits for 2020-2022, but ESD didn't actually pay them until last year (2022). I just logged into my ESD Claimant Services account to get my 1099-G forms, and they're showing completely wrong years! Instead of 2020-2021-2022, the forms say 2010-2011-2012 (a full DECADE off!). To make matters worse, I just noticed ESD reported over $4,000 more than what I actually claimed according to my payment history in the Claimant Services portal. Has anyone dealt with incorrect 1099-G forms from ESD? How do I make sure the IRS gets the correct information? Tax deadline is approaching and I'm stressing out.

I had a similar issue but with different years (mine showed 2018 instead of 2022). You need to contact ESD to have them issue a corrected 1099-G ASAP. Print out your payment history from the portal to prove the discrepancy in amounts too.

•Thanks. Have you tried calling them about this? I've been calling the main number for 2 days and can't get through to a real person.

This is actually a potentially serious issue that needs correction. The IRS and ESD match these records, and misreported years could trigger audits or tax issues. Here's what you need to do: 1. Download and save all your payment history records from your ESD account as proof 2. Request a corrected 1099-G through ESD's dedicated tax document correction process 3. If you've already filed taxes with incorrect information, you may need to file an amended return Don't panic - this happens more often than you'd think and there's an established correction process. The important thing is documenting everything and getting it fixed before any IRS notices arrive.

•The ESD tax document correction process is a JOKE. I requested a corrected 1099-G last February and STILL haven't gotten it fixed. They keep saying "it's processing" but nothing happens. OP is right to worry!

•Yeah, there was a huge backlog from the pandemic. My claims got stuck in adjudication forever, then they denied them, then I appealed, and finally got approved in late 2022. The whole process took forever.

I work with tax issues professionally. When ESD issues a 1099-G with incorrect years, it creates a mismatch in the IRS system. The IRS uses the YEAR on the 1099-G to determine which tax year the income applies to, not when you actually received the money. Having a 2010-2012 1099-G issued in 2022 is a significant error that could trigger automated notices from the IRS. You need to: 1. Call ESD's dedicated tax line at 360-486-5339 (not the regular unemployment line) 2. Request a written correction specifically stating the proper tax years 3. Get the corrected 1099-G before filing your 2022 return if possible The amount discrepancy is equally important - document everything carefully.

•Thank you for this detailed advice. I've been trying that tax line number too but it just rings forever. Is there any other way to reach them about tax documents? I'm worried about filing with incorrect information but also missing the deadline waiting for ESD.

I went through something similar with ESD last tax season. After weeks of trying to get through their phone lines and getting nowhere, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual ESD agent within about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The ESD agent was able to submit a request for a corrected 1099-G for me on the spot. Saved me so much time and frustration compared to the weeks I spent trying on my own.

•That sounds promising, I'll check it out. At this point I'll try anything to get this fixed before I have to file.

Hold on, this sounds fishy. Did you actually file unemployment claims back in 2010-2012? Because if you did, maybe those are legitimate 1099-Gs from back then that you never saw, and your recent ones are still coming? The ESD system sometimes pulls up old records when you log in.

•OMG you might be right... I just checked my records more carefully and I did receive some benefits way back then during the recession. I completely forgot about that period. Let me look more deeply into my account to see if the recent 1099-Gs are separate. This might explain everything! I feel silly now for panicking.

The ESD tax document system is THE WORST. They completely botched my 1099-G last year too - wrong SSN, wrong amount, everything. Took me FIVE MONTHS to get it fixed and I had to file for a tax extension. Make sure you document EVERYTHING. Take screenshots, record call reference numbers, and get names of anyone you talk to. Trust me, you'll need that paper trail when they inevitably mess up the correction too!

FINAL EDIT: Mea culpa! I had forgotten I received benefits in 2010-2012. Please ignore this post. Sorry! I just wanted to update everyone. After digging deeper into my records as someone suggested, I realized those 1099-Gs ARE actually from 2010-2012 when I received benefits during the recession. I completely forgot about that period! My recent 1099-Gs should be available separately, I just didn't look in the right place. Sorry for the confusion and thanks everyone for your help.

•No worries! This happens more often than you'd think. Make sure you check under the tax documents section specifically for the more recent years. ESD should have your 2022 1099-G posted there, though sometimes they're late uploading them. Glad you got it sorted out!
