Can ESD tell me if I filed my 1099 from 2021 unemployment income?

I'm kinda freaking out right now. I just realized I can't remember if I ever filed my 1099-G form from unemployment benefits I received back in 2021. I was going through some old tax stuff and can't find any record of including it in my taxes. Does anyone know if ESD can tell me whether I properly reported this income? Is there a way to check? I'm worried about getting hit with penalties or something if I didn't report it correctly. Also, is it too late to fix this if I missed it? Really don't want to deal with tax problems on top of everything else right now.

You can request a duplicate 1099-G from ESD if you need it. Login to your eServices account, go to the 1099 section, and you can view or print past forms. But ESD won't know if you actually filed it with your taxes – they just issue the form. The IRS would be the ones who know if you reported the income.

Thanks for the info! So ESD just provides the form but doesn't track whether I actually included it on my tax return? That makes sense. I'll check my eServices account right away. If I find out I didn't report it, do you know if I need to file an amended return?

i had the same panic last year lol. technically you should amend your return if you didnt report it. the irs gets a copy of your 1099-g so they already know you got benefits. you can file a 1040x to fix it but u might owe interest depending how much $ it was.

Oh no, that's what I was afraid of. I can't even remember how much it was for! Ugh this is stressing me out.

THE IRS ALREADY KNOWS!!! They have had that info since 2022. ESD reports all unemployment payments to the IRS directly. If you didn't report it and owed taxes, you would have gotten a notice by now. Check your mail history carefully.

Not necessarily true. The IRS is EXTREMELY backed up since covid. They're still processing stuff from years ago. I just got a notice about my 2019 taxes last month! OP should definitely check and file an amendment if needed rather than wait for the IRS to catch up.

Just want to point out that the 1099-G is what ESD provides you showing how much unemployment you received, but you don't "file" the actual 1099-G form itself. You're supposed to use the information from it to report that income on your tax return. So your question isn't really if you "filed your 1099" but rather if you reported your unemployment income on your tax return. As others said, log into eServices, go to the 1099 section and you can see your historical forms. Compare that amount to what's on your tax return (look at line 7 on Schedule 1 of your 1040 from 2021). If you missed it, file a 1040X amended return.

Ohh that makes more sense - thank you for explaining! I'm not great with tax terminology. I'll check my 2021 return and see if I included it on that Schedule 1 line. Appreciate the specific guidance!

I went through this exact situation. Trying to call ESD or the IRS directly is an absolute nightmare - I spent weeks trying. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an ESD agent who helped me access my past 1099-G forms and explained what I needed to do. They have a good video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. The agent confirmed that even though it's been a few years, I could still file an amended return to correct the issue.

That's really helpful, thank you! I've been trying to call ESD too but just get disconnected. I'll check out that service if I can't figure this out through the website. Did you end up having to pay penalties when you amended your return?

I did have to pay some interest on the tax I owed, but it wasn't as bad as I expected. The ESD agent I talked to through Claimyr also helped me understand exactly what documentation I needed for the amendment, which saved me a lot of time and confusion.

why are you worrying about taxes from 4 years ago? the irs is so backed up they probably haven't even looked at your 2021 return yet lol. but ya check your eservices account if your really worried about it

This is dangerously incorrect advice. The IRS has a 3-year window to audit returns, but there's no time limit if they believe you substantially underreported income. And penalties/interest continue to accrue the longer you wait to correct it. Taking a "they probably won't notice" approach to tax compliance is setting yourself up for much bigger problems down the road.

One thing to remember is that the rules were different for 2021 because of COVID relief programs. Depending on WHEN in 2021 you received unemployment and how much income you had overall, some unemployment benefits might have been tax-exempt under the American Rescue Plan. So even if you did forget to report it, you might not actually owe anything additional.

That's a really good point I hadn't considered! I think my unemployment was early 2021, so maybe some of it was covered under that exemption. I'll definitely look into this - maybe the situation isn't as bad as I feared.

Update us after you figure it out! I'm curious what happens. I've been paranoid about my taxes too lol

Will do! I'm going to check eServices tonight and then compare to my tax return. Fingers crossed I actually did include it and just forgot!
