NY unemployment 1099-G form showing $0 paid when I received benefits for 6 months - system error?

So frustrated right now. I went to download my 1099-G for my tax filing and the system is showing I received $0 in benefits for 2021. This is completely wrong! I was laid off from my job in February 2021 when our company downsized, and I collected unemployment until August 2021 when I found a new position. I definitely received around $2,400 per month for those 6 months and had taxes withheld each payment. When I try to access the form online it shows this weird message saying "No payments were made to you for the tax year requested" which is total BS. I've checked my bank statements and can verify the deposits. Has anyone else run into this? I've tried calling NY unemployment but can't get through to anyone. Tax deadline is coming up fast and I need this document!

Same exact thing happened to me! My 1099 shows zero but I collected from January through July last year. About $14,000 total that I DEFINITELY received. I've tried emailing them through the contact portal but no response after 3 weeks. The worst part is that the IRS still knows you got the money, so you HAVE to report it or you'll get flagged for audit. I ended up having to manually calculate my benefits from my bank statements. Such a headache.

Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. Did you end up getting it resolved or did you just file with your own calculations?

I just filed with my own calculations and kept all my bank statements as proof in case I get audited. I couldn't wait any longer for them to fix it. šŸ˜

this is actually scary af. how are we supposed to know the exact amount with taxes taken out? i'm terrible at math lol

I downloaded all my bank statements and made an excel sheet. Took me like 3 hours but at least I know its accurate. The withholding was usually about 10% of each payment for me.

After 2 weeks of trying to call NY unemployment with zero luck, I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me connected to an actual human at unemployment in less than an hour. The agent told me there was a system-wide glitch with the 1099-G forms and they're working on fixing it. Apparently loads of people are having this issue. They manually sent me a correct 1099-G in the mail after I spoke with them. Talking to an agent got my tax form issue fixed in one day after weeks of nothing. https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

is this for real? sounds too good to be true tbh. the unemployment phone system is like trying to win the lottery

Yeah it actually works! I was skeptical too but I was desperate. They basically just stay on hold for you and call you when they get an agent. Worth every penny to not waste hours on hold.

I don't remember exactly but it was worth it to finally get my tax form. I tried calling on my own for TWO WEEKS straight and couldn't get through. This got me talking to someone in under an hour and my issue was solved the same day.

Yep! Best money I've spent to get this tax mess fixed. The time I saved not being on hold was worth it alone.

this is a known issue with the NY unemployment system right now. there was an announcement about it somewhere on the website but its buried in like 5 pages deep. they had some kind of computer glitch when generating the 2021 1099-G forms. if you call them they can mail you a corrected form but GOOD LUCK getting through on the phone lol. I tried for days and gave up.

YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO REPORT EVEN IF THE 1099 IS WRONG!!! The IRS already knows how much you got paid. If your reported amount doesn't match what they have on file you'll get flagged for audit. This happened to my cousin last year with a different issue and he had to pay penalties. Just calculate what you received from your bank statements and report it accurately even if the 1099 is wrong. SAVE ALL YOUR DOCUMENTATION.

Thanks for the heads up! I've started going through my bank statements already. Such a pain though - shouldn't have to do this manually.

Is this tru for real? How would the IRS know if the state unemployment office reported $0? That doesn't make sense.

The system glitch is just on the forms they generated for us. Their internal reporting to the IRS is probably correct. Trust me, you don't wanna mess with this - my cousin paid like $800 in penalties for a similar mistake.

yall why does it feel like the NY unemployment system is INTENTIONALLY broken?? like they make it impossible to talk to anyone, the website is from 1997, and now they cant even generate basic tax forms correctly. i swear they do this on purpose to make people give up on benefits they deserve. smh my head šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø

FOR REAL! this is the third major issue I've had with them in the past year. its almost like they want us to fail šŸ˜¤

It's not intentional, it's just decades of underfunding and outdated technology. Most state unemployment systems run on COBOL which is a programming language from the 1950s. Hardly anyone knows how to program it anymore.

whatever the reason, it's still BS that we have to deal with this. other states seem to manage just fine!

Let me share what I learned after dealing with this exact same issue (and eventually solving it). The NY unemployment 1099-G error is affecting thousands of people who received benefits in 2021. Here's what I found out and how I fixed it: ā€¢ This is a confirmed system-wide glitch - NOT your error ā€¢ The DOL is aware but overwhelmed with cases ā€¢ The online system may show $0 but their internal records are correct ā€¢ You MUST report your actual benefits on your taxes regardless of what the 1099-G says ā€¢ Getting a corrected form requires speaking to an actual agent After multiple failed attempts to reach anyone, I finally used claimyr.com which got me connected to a live agent. The agent confirmed this is a known issue and manually generated a corrected 1099-G for me that showed the right amount (about $11,600 in my case). They mailed it within 3 days. If you're in a hurry for tax filing, you can calculate your benefits from bank statements, but I highly recommend getting the official corrected form for your records in case of audit. The phone service was a lifesaver after wasting days trying to get through myself. Hope this helps someone else caught in this frustrating situation!

i filed my taxes already with the incorrect $0 amount because i didn't know what else to do...am i screwed? should i file an amendment? šŸ˜°

You definitely need to file an amendment! The IRS will notice the discrepancy and you could end up with penalties or worse. Don't wait.

fuuuuuuck. that's gonna cost me more money to have my tax person do an amendment. this whole system is a joke.

Yeah definitely amend ASAP. It's better to pay a little now to your tax preparer than deal with IRS penalties later.

FYI - I just got off the phone with unemployment (took me 2 hrs to get through) and they said this is affecting about 40% of all people who received benefits in 2021. They're sending out corrected forms but it could take up to 30 days. The agent told me we can request an extension on tax filing if needed. Just thought everyone should know.

-

Zoe Gonzalez

Thanks for the update! Did they say if we need to specifically request the corrected form or if they're automatically sending them?

They said they're automatically sending them out but if you want to expedite you need to specifically request it by calling. Such a mess!

Sorry you're dealing with this. Just to add some context - I work in tax preparation and we're seeing this issue with MULTIPLE states, not just NY. There seems to have been some kind of nationwide glitch in the unemployment reporting systems. If you're affected, you should: 1. Calculate your actual unemployment income from bank statements 2. Report the CORRECT amount on your tax return regardless of what the 1099-G says 3. File IRS Form 4852 as a substitute for the incorrect 1099-G 4. Keep ALL documentation of your unemployment payments 5. Try to get a corrected 1099-G from your state for your records Don't delay filing just because of this issue - the IRS will understand as long as you report accurately.

I had exact same problem!!! I just got my corrected 1099-G in the mail yesterday after calling NY unemployment non-stop for a week. Keep trying the phone number at exactly 8:00 AM when they open - that's the only time I've ever gotten through. Once I got someone on the phone, they fixed it in like 5 minutes and mailed me the corrected form.

This whole system is such a joke. These incompetent agencies collect crazy amounts of our tax money yet can't even handle basic functions like sending out correct tax forms. And then WE have to deal with the consequences and potentially get in trouble with the IRS because of THEIR mistakes. Make it make sense!!! šŸ¤¬

YES! It's like their system is programmed to hang up after a certain amount of time. I got disconnected twice after 45+ minutes on hold. I'm about to lose my mind.

Protip: if you cant get your corrected 1099-G in time, you can use your bank statements + the weekly benefit amount confirmation emails they sent when you certified each week. Add it all up, and make sure to account for the tax withholding (usually 10% if you opted for withholding). That's what my accountant told me to do.

The system is showing zero for everyone who stopped claiming before December 2021. It's some kind of calendar year programming error. If you claimed through December 31, your form is fine. If you stopped before then (like you did in September), it shows zero. Complete trash programming but that's NY unemployment for ya! šŸ—‘ļø
