NY unemployment 1099-G shows zero benefits but I collected until October - what gives?

Just logged in to check my 1099-G for tax season and I'm totally freaking out. The form says I received $0 in benefits for the entire past year, but that's completely wrong! I was collecting unemployment weekly until early October when I finally got a new job. I'm 100% certain I received payments because I literally paid my rent and bought groceries with that money for almost 10 months. Has anyone else noticed this error on their tax form? I'm worried this is going to mess up my tax filing and I'll either get audited or miss out on reporting the correct income. Already tried calling the NY unemployment office but can't get through to anyone. The website isn't helping either. Any advice on how to get this fixed ASAP?

Same thing happened to me! My 1099-G says I got nothing when I definitely collected about $11,700 last year. I've been trying to get through on the phone for THREE DAYS and keep getting disconnected. This is ridiculous. Has anyone managed to get this fixed yet?

Omg I thought I was the only one! Been trying to call since Tuesday and can't get a human on the line 😫

My sister had the same issue. She got thru by calling right when they open at 8am, but had to try for like 4 days straight.

Did ur sister get it resolved? Did they send her a corrected 1099? I'm so stressed about this

0 coins

Yeah they said they'd mail a corrected one within 14 business days. She's still waiting tho 🙄

After days of getting nowhere trying to reach NY unemployment by phone, I used claimyr.com to get a callback with an actual agent. Best decision ever! The agent looked into my account, confirmed the 1099-G error, and scheduled a correction to be sent to me next week. Talking to an agent got my tax form issue sorted so fast! They also said it's a known system error affecting lots of people. Check out this vid on how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

is this for real? i've been trying to get through for a week now

100% real. I was in the same spot - couldn't get through for days. Got a callback within 2 hours and actually fixed my problem.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? 🤔

0 coins

It actually works lol. They call on your behalf and stay on hold, then call you when a real person answers. Saved me hours of hold music and frustration.

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol but hey if it works, it works

IMPORTANT: Screenshot everything from your bank account showing the deposits! I had a similar issue last year (different problem but still needed proof). Without documentation they'll make you jump through even more hoops.

This is a KNOWN SYSTEM ERROR that's happening to thousands of people in NY right now. The system glitched when they were generating the 1099-Gs for people who collected both regular UI and extended benefits. I spoke to a supervisor who said they're working on fixing it, but you should definitely contact them to make sure your specific case gets resolved.

How did you manage to speak to a supervisor?? I can't even get past the automated system!

I used claimyr.com after my neighbor recommended it. Got a callback with an actual person after being stuck in phone hell for days.

Do you know how long the fix is gonna take? I need to file my taxes soon and this is holding everything up

They told me 2-3 weeks for corrected forms to go out. But if you call and get your case flagged they might expedite it.

Ok so here's what I found out from an agent (finally got through yesterday). There was a massive glitch in their system that affected anyone who received both regular and extended benefits. They're issuing corrected 1099-Gs but it could take up to 3 weeks. If you file your taxes before getting the corrected form, you'll have to file an amended return later. Also, SAVE ALL YOUR PAYMENT RECORDS as proof just in case there's an audit.

Thx for sharing! Did they say if we'll get notified when the corrected forms are ready or do we just keep checking?

They said they're mailing the corrected forms automatically, but knowing how slow the mail is... might be worth calling again in a few weeks if you don't get it

DO NOT FILE YOUR TAXES YET if your 1099-G is wrong!! If you report incorrect income, you'll just have to amend later which is a huge pain and could delay any refund.

But what if we need our refund NOW? I was counting on that money 😭

I hear you but trust me, filing an amended return is way worse. Plus if the IRS compares info and sees a mismatch they might flag your return for audit. Better to wait.

ugh this system is such trash. thanks for the advice tho

This exact thing happened to my roommate! He went to the actual office in person and they fixed it on the spot, but that was before covid restrictions came back. Not sure if that's an option for you now.

I work for a tax prep company (not gonna say which one) and we're seeing this A LOT with NY unemployment 1099s right now. It's a known issue. My advice: 1) Try to get a corrected form before filing 2) If you can't, keep detailed records of what you actually received 3) Consider talking to a tax pro about how to handle this correctly on your return

As another tax professional, I second this. Document EVERYTHING. Print bank statements showing the deposits.

Will the IRS come after me if I report the correct amount even tho the 1099 is wrong?

0 coins

That's tricky. Technically your return should match your tax docs. But if you file with the incorrect zero amount, you'd be underreporting income which can also cause problems. Best to get corrected docs.

After spending hours trying to reach an actual human being at the NY unemployment office, I finally found a solution! The team at claimyr.com helped me get connected to a live agent who confirmed there was a system-wide issue with the 1099-G forms. They're currently working to issue corrected forms to everyone affected. The agent was able to verify my correct benefit amount and flagged my account for priority correction. Here's what you need to know: - This is affecting thousands of NY unemployment recipients - The system error happened during the year-end processing - Corrected forms are being generated but could take 2-3 weeks - You can request yours be prioritized if you speak to an agent - DO NOT file taxes with the incorrect form - Keep records of all unemployment payments you received - If you use claimyr.com, you can skip the endless hold times Honestly, I wish I'd known about this service months ago. Would have saved me so much frustration dealing with ny unemployment issues throughout the year!

not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these never work 🙄

I get the skepticism, I really do. But after 3 days of not getting through, I was desperate. It's just a service that waits on hold for you then calls when they get an agent. Saved me hours of listening to that awful hold music.

0 coins

Dude this is EXACTLY what I needed! Just booked my callback. How long did it take to get through?

0 coins

I got my callback in about 1.5 hours! Way better than the 6+ hours I wasted trying myself

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I've tried EVERYTHING to get through to someone

0 coins

It's legit. I was skeptical too but was at my wits end. You pay a fee but tbh it was worth every penny to actually get my issue resolved.

I'm having the EXACT same issue! My 1099 says $0 but I got benefits from January through August. This is so stressful. Please update if you manage to get it fixed.

The whole ny unemployment system is a joke lmao. I had so many issues last year I started keeping a spreadsheet of every payment, date, confirmation number, etc. Guess who's glad they did that now? 👈😎👈

This is actually smart af. I'm gonna start doing this for everything government related from now on

Another option: Login to your account and check your payment history. You can print that out as proof of what you actually received if you need to dispute the 1099-G.

Emily Jackson

I tried that but the payment history only shows the last 3 months for me. Does anyone know how to see the full year?

0 coins

Natalie Adams

•

You can request your full payment history by submitting form TX100 - but it'll take forever to get it back 🙄

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

I thought the same thing but I was desperate after trying for days. Used claimyr.com and actually got through to someone who fixed my issue. Sometimes you gotta try something new when the old way isn't working.

0 coins

huh, ok maybe I'll check it out. I've been trying to get thru for like 2 weeks about this same 1099 bs

0 coins

I called the IRS about this (since its a tax form issue) and they said we should request a corrected form from the state agency and NOT file until we get it. If the deadline approaches and you still don't have it, they recommended filing for an extension.
