DEO 1099-G shows $6k but only received $2700 - Tax form discrepancy help needed!

Has anyone else noticed a HUGE error on their 1099-G tax form from Florida DEO this year? According to my records, I only collected about $2700 total in unemployment (that includes the extra federal money) during the 6 weeks I was on unemployment last fall. But I just downloaded my 1099-G form and it shows they paid me over $6,000!! That's more than DOUBLE what I actually got! I've already called DEO twice about this discrepancy. First time I waited 3 hours just to have the call drop. Second time I got through after 1.5 hours and the rep just said they'd "make a note" and someone would contact me. That was 2 weeks ago and still nothing. I'm freaking out because I need to file my taxes soon and don't want to report incorrect income. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a specific department I should ask for when calling? This is a complete nightmare!!!

Omg yes!!! Same issue here! My 1099G says $9200 but I swear I only got like $4500. I've tried calling 3x already and can't even get through. Ughhh

Have you tried emailing them? I sent something to the general inquiries address but no response yet. This is so stressful!

This happened to me last year. The issue is usually that the 1099-G is showing the GROSS amount they approved before deductions. Did you have taxes withheld or any other deductions? If you elected to have the 10% federal tax withholding, that would account for some of the difference. Also, did you have any weeks where benefits were approved but later adjusted? The DEO system sometimes counts the original approval amount on the 1099-G even if they later reduced it. You should look at your payment history in your CONNECT account - go to "View and Maintain Account Information" then select "Payment History". Compare the weekly details there with what actually hit your bank account. If there's still a huge discrepancy, you need to formally request a corrected 1099-G. Call and specifically ask for the "tax document department" or "1099-G corrections" - regular agents often can't help with this.

Thank you! I did have taxes withheld but that would only account for about $270, not over $3000 difference. I'll check the payment history again - I'm wondering if they're counting weeks that were initially approved but then I got hired and reported wages? I'll try asking specifically for the tax document department when I call again.

THE DEO IS DOING THIS ON PURPOSE TO SCREW US WITH THE IRS!!! This is the 3rd post I've seen about incorrect 1099-Gs this month. They KNOW the forms are wrong but don't care because they're too busy "catching fraud" and making honest people suffer. I had a similar issue and had to call FOURTEEN TIMES before I got someone who could actually help. And guess what? They admitted it was THEIR ERROR but said it would take 8-12 WEEKS to issue a corrected form!!! If you file your taxes with the wrong amount, YOU will be the one the IRS comes after, not the DEO. Complete garbage system.

I don't think they're doing it on purpose... the system is just really outdated. But I agree it's frustrating. Did you end up getting your corrected form after the 8-12 weeks?

check if they included any overpayment amounts. my brothers 1099 included $4300 that deo says he was overpaid even tho he's appealing it and hasnt paid it back. they still count it as "paid to you" on the tax form which is so messed up

I didn't get any overpayment notices that I know of, but I'll definitely check my determination letters again. That would explain it! This system is so confusing.

I had this exact situation last year. After spending weeks trying to get through to someone at DEO who could actually help, I found a service called Claimyr that got me connected to a DEO agent in about 20 minutes instead of waiting hours or getting disconnected. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/UzW_hbUy-ss?si=zORd51jeq1GX5Ldj When I finally got through, I had to specifically request the tax department. They confirmed there was an error in my 1099-G and issued a corrected one within 3 weeks. The mistake on mine was they had included weeks that were initially approved but later denied after I reported wages. The system counted the original approval amounts even though I never received that money. Make sure you have all your payment records ready when you call - bank statements showing the actual deposits you received will be essential.

Thank you! I hadn't heard of Claimyr before but at this point I'm desperate enough to try anything. I cannot keep spending hours on hold just to get disconnected. Did you have to provide anything special to get them to issue the corrected form?

When I called, I had to provide my claimant ID, the last 4 of my SSN, and dates of employment/unemployment. The most helpful thing was having screenshots of my payment history from CONNECT and my bank statements showing the actual deposits. They compared those and saw the discrepancy right away. Make sure to be very clear that you're calling about a 1099-G correction specifically, not just a general question.

To answer your question about specific things to ask for: When you call, immediately say "I need help with an incorrect 1099-G tax form" as soon as you get a person. If the agent says they can't help, ask to be transferred to the "Tax Documents Unit" or "1099-G Corrections Department." For anyone dealing with this issue, here's what you'll need to have ready: 1. Your Claimant ID number 2. Your complete payment history from CONNECT 3. Bank statements showing the actual deposits received 4. A calculation of the discrepancy amount 5. Your current 1099-G (note the form number in the top right corner) If your request for correction is approved, get the confirmation number and the agent's ID number. It typically takes 2-4 weeks for a corrected form, though some people have reported longer waits. Also important: If you're close to the tax filing deadline and haven't received the corrected form, you can file IRS Form 4852 (Substitute for Form 1099-G) with your tax return. This allows you to report the correct amount while documenting your efforts to get the proper form from DEO.

This is incredibly helpful! Thank you so much for all the details. I'm going to gather all these documents tonight and try calling again tomorrow. I didn't know about Form 4852 - that's a huge relief since I was worried about the tax deadline approaching.

Has anyone tried going through their state representative instead of dealing with DEO directly? When I had a different issue with my unemployment last year (not 1099-G related), I contacted my state rep's office and they have liaisons who can escalate issues with DEO. Just a thought if you're not getting anywhere with the regular channels.

YES! This actually works! My cousin had her issue resolved in 4 days after her state rep got involved. The regular DEO channels had her waiting for MONTHS with no solution.

im so confused about all this. do i need to wait for a corrected 1099g to file my taxes or can i just report the amount i actually got? will the irs know the difference?

You should never just report a different amount than what's on your 1099-G without proper documentation. The IRS receives a copy of the 1099-G from the state, so they will notice the discrepancy. Either wait for a corrected form from DEO, or file using Form 4852 (Substitute for Form 1099-G) where you can explain the situation. Keep all your records of attempts to get the form corrected.

UPDATE: I finally got through to DEO today! After asking specifically for the tax document department like many of you suggested, I was transferred to someone who could actually help. Turns out they were counting weeks that were approved but then I reported wages from my new job, so I never actually received those payments. They're sending me a corrected 1099-G that should arrive in 3-4 weeks. For anyone else dealing with this - be persistent and specifically ask for the tax document department. And thank you all for your help and suggestions!

Great news! Make sure to follow up if you don't receive the corrected form in the timeframe they promised. Glad you got it resolved!
