How to report DEO unemployment income on 1040 tax form - FLORIDA
I received about $6,800 in Florida unemployment benefits last year along with my regular income from my job before I got laid off. Now I'm trying to do my taxes and I'm completely lost on where to put the unemployment info on the 1040 form. DEO sent me a 1099-G form but the instructions aren't clear. Do I just add this amount to my W-2 income or is there a special place for unemployment on the 1040? Does anyone know exactly which line it goes on? I'm trying to file myself to save money but now I'm worried I'll mess something up with the DEO reporting.

Unemployment benefits get reported on Schedule 1, Line 7 of Form 1040. You'll need to fill out Schedule 1 and attach it to your 1040. The amount from your 1099-G box 1 goes on that line. Then the total from Schedule 1 gets transferred to line 8 of your Form 1040. Don't add it to your W-2 income - they go in different places. Make sure you're looking at the current tax year forms since they change the line numbers sometimes.

•Thank you so much! I was about to add it to my W-2 amount which would have been wrong. Do I need to include a copy of the 1099-G form when I mail in my return or just put the amount on Schedule 1?

BE CAREFUL!! DEO messed up my 1099-G last year and showed I got $2,400 more than I actually received!! Double-check the amount on your 1099-G against your payment history in CONNECT before you file!!! I had to spend MONTHS getting them to issue a corrected form and had to file an amended return. The DEO tax department barely answers their phones!!

•Omg I didn't even think to check that! I'm going to log into CONNECT right now and make sure the amounts match. Thanks for the warning!

Just went through this last month. Besides putting it on Schedule 1, remember that Florida unemployment is subject to FEDERAL taxes but not state taxes (since FL doesn't have income tax). If you didn't have taxes withheld from your unemployment payments, you might end up owing money. Check box 4 on your 1099-G to see if any federal tax was withheld from your benefits.

•I think I did elect to have taxes withheld but I need to double check. Box 4 on my 1099-G shows $680 was withheld. Hopefully that's enough to cover what I owe! This is so complicated.

i just use turbotax and it asks about unemployment and i just type in the numbers from the 1099g form. way easier than trying to figure out all the forms yourself tbh

•That's probably smarter than what I'm doing lol. I was trying to save the TurboTax fee but maybe it's worth it to make sure everything's right.

I had the same problem last year trying to get through to DEO about tax questions. Could NOT get past the automated system. Finally used Claimyr to connect with an actual DEO agent (claimyr.com) and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/UzW_hbUy-ss?si=zORd51jeq1GX5Ldj. Got through to a real person in about 20 minutes instead of spending days calling. The agent was able to explain why my 1099-G amount didn't match what I thought I received (some payments were from the previous tax year).

•Does that service actually work? I've been calling DEO for weeks about my 1099-G and can't get a human. Might be worth trying if it actually gets you through.

•Yes it worked for me! The automated system is designed to basically prevent you from reaching agents, but this bypassed that whole thing. Saved me tons of frustration.

Don't forget that if you received unemployment in 2025, you don't get the tax break that they gave during the pandemic years. Back in 2020-2021, the first $10,200 of unemployment was tax-free under the American Rescue Plan, but that expired. Now 100% of your unemployment is taxable at the federal level.

•I didn't know there used to be a tax break. That would have been nice! Thanks for clarifying that it's all taxable now. At least I withheld some taxes along the way.

this is why our system is so messed up!!! regular working ppl get laid off, then get taxed on their unemployment while billionaires pay nothing! and florida deo makes everything 10x harder with their broken website and impossible customer service. the whole system is designed to confuse us!!

•For real! I spent 3 hours on hold with DEO last week just trying to get a basic question answered about my 1099-G. Complete waste of time.

To answer your second question - you don't need to mail in the actual 1099-G form with your tax return. The IRS already gets a copy directly. You just need to report the amount on Schedule 1. But definitely keep your 1099-G with your tax records for at least 3 years in case of an audit.

•Perfect, thank you! That saves me from having to make another copy. I'll definitely keep the original safe with my other tax documents.
