How do I report DEO unemployment benefits on my 2025 tax return? So confused!
I received unemployment benefits for about 3 months this year after being laid off from my warehouse job. Now tax season is approaching and I have NO IDEA how to report this on my taxes! Do I just put it as regular income? Will DEO send me some kind of form? I've never had to deal with unemployment taxes before and don't want to mess up my return. Anyone know the process? Thanks for any help!!!

The DEO will send you a Form 1099-G by January 31st showing the total unemployment benefits you received and any taxes that were withheld. You'll use this form when filing your taxes. It should be mailed to your address on file with CONNECT, but you can also access it electronically through your CONNECT portal under the 'Determination, Monetary & Issue Summary' section around late January. Unemployment benefits are considered taxable income for federal taxes, so you'll need to report it on your tax return. The 1099-G will have all the information you need for filing.

•Thank you! That's exactly what I needed to know. I was worried I'd have to keep track of all the payments myself. Do you know if I need to pay state taxes on unemployment in Florida too?

MAKE SURE you actually get the 1099-G!!! DEO is NOTORIOUS for sending these forms late or to old addresses. I didn't get mine last year and ended up with a tax nightmare because I didn't report the income correctly. If you don't have it by February 10th, call them immediately!!! Which is basically IMPOSSIBLE since they NEVER answer their phones and I spent 3 WEEKS trying to get through!!

Just to add to what others have said - if you didn't elect to have taxes withheld from your unemployment payments (there was an option when you first filed your claim), you might owe taxes when you file. Unemployment benefits are fully taxable by the federal government. Florida doesn't have state income tax, so you only need to worry about federal taxes on your unemployment benefits. Also, when you get your 1099-G, double-check that the amount looks correct based on what you received. If there are discrepancies, you'll need to contact DEO to get it corrected before filing.

•I think I did choose to have taxes withheld, but now I'm not 100% sure. Guess I'll find out when I get the 1099-G. Good to know FL doesn't tax unemployment!

my sister works for h&r block and she says LOTS of people mess up their unemployment tax stuff. the big mistake is not reporting it at all which can cause an audit later. just wait for your 1099g form and give it to your tax person or enter it in turbotax or whatever you use

•This is exactly right. And if you're using tax software like TurboTax or H&R Block online, they'll actually walk you through entering the 1099-G information step by step. It's pretty straightforward once you have the form. One thing to remember is that if you did have taxes withheld from your unemployment payments (usually it's 10% if you opted for withholding), that will be reflected on your 1099-G and will count as taxes you've already paid.

I had the same question last year and couldn't get through to DEO on the phone for weeks. I found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to a DEO agent within 30 minutes! They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/UzW_hbUy-ss?si=zORd51jeq1GX5Ldj The agent was able to confirm my 1099-G was already available in my CONNECT account and walked me through how to download it. Saved me so much frustration.

•Does this actually work? I've been trying to get ahold of someone at DEO for 2 weeks about my 1099-G showing the wrong amount! I'll try anything at this point.

To directly answer your original question: 1. Wait for your 1099-G (available by January 31st) 2. Report the amount from Box 1 of the 1099-G on Schedule 1, Line 7 of your Form 1040 3. The amount in Box 4 shows federal income tax withheld, which you'll include with your other withholdings If you use tax software or an accountant, just provide them with the 1099-G and they'll know exactly where to put the information. The unemployment income gets added to your other income sources and taxed at your normal tax rate.

•This is incredibly helpful! I appreciate the clear explanation of exactly where the information goes on the tax forms. I'll be using TurboTax so hopefully it'll guide me through it, but it's good to know what to expect.

•YEP! And if you didn't have taxes withheld when receiving benefits, you can get hit with a HUGE bill! I owed almost $1,200 because I didn't have withholding on my benefits. It's such a scam - they tax you when you're already struggling!

One last thing to be aware of: if you can't find your 1099-G or haven't received it by early February, you can call DEO at 1-833-FL-APPLY (1-833-352-7759) to request a copy or check if it's available online. You'll need your Social Security number and PIN to verify your identity. You can also check if your 1099-G is available in your CONNECT account by logging in and going to "View and Maintain Account Information" then "Determination, Monetary & Issue Summary" and looking for the 1099-G link. They're usually uploaded there before the paper copies are mailed out.

•Thank you for this additional information! I'm going to set a reminder to check my CONNECT account at the end of January. I'd rather get it electronically than risk missing the mail.
