Anyone receive DEO unemployment tax refund from IRS for 2025?

Just got my regular tax refund but nothing for the unemployment taxes i paid last year. DEO told me there was gonna be some kind of refund for unemployment taxes?? Anyone know if theyre still sending these out or if i need to do something else to get mine? I claimed about $6300 in unemployment benefits last year and pretty sure i paid taxes on all of it.

what tax refund are you talking about?? there's no special refund for unemployment taxes in 2025. you just claim your unemployment on your regular tax return like always. did someone at DEO actually tell you this or did you hear it somewhere else??

You might be mixing up different tax years. During the pandemic (tax year 2020), there was a federal exemption where the first $10,200 of unemployment benefits were tax-free. That was a one-time thing from the American Rescue Plan. For 2024 taxes (filed in 2025), all unemployment benefits are fully taxable unless there's new legislation I haven't heard about. Check your 1099-G form from DEO - that shows exactly how much unemployment you received and how much tax was withheld. If you opted for tax withholding, they should have taken 10% for federal taxes.

THE GOVERNMNET IS ABSOLUTELY NOT GIVING BACK UNEMPLOYMENT TAXES!! This is how they trick people. DEO TAKES our money then makes us THINK we'll get something back. I paid over $7,200 in taxes on my benefits last year and my tax guy says NONE of it is special or refundable this year. It's all just regular income tax like always. Don't hold your breath waiting for some magical refund that's NEVER coming!!!!

While you're right that there's no special unemployment tax refund this year, the standard 10% withholding that DEO takes out is just an estimate. Depending on your total yearly income, tax bracket, deductions, and credits, you might actually get some of that withholding back as part of your normal tax refund. Or you might owe more. Everyone's tax situation is different.

I had the same confusion last month! Called DEO about something else and the agent mentioned something about tax benefits, but she was talking about the Earned Income Tax Credit that some unemployment recipients qualify for, NOT a special refund on unemployment taxes themselves. Might be what you heard too?

The only way to actually find out if you're due any additional refunds or credits is to talk to someone at the IRS or DEO who can check your specific account. Good luck getting through to either one though - I've been trying to reach DEO for 3 weeks about an overpayment issue and keep getting disconnected or waiting for hours. I finally got through using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that somehow gets you past all the phone system issues. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/UzW_hbUy-ss?si=zORd51jeq1GX5Ldj It was the only way I could actually talk to a human at DEO who explained my situation. Might help if you need clarification on the tax stuff directly from them.

To summarize what others have said: 1. There is NO special unemployment tax refund for 2024 taxes (filed in 2025) 2. All unemployment benefits are fully taxable as regular income 3. The special $10,200 tax exemption was only for 2020 during COVID 4. If you had taxes withheld from your unemployment (the 10% option), that withholding is reflected in your regular tax return 5. Your 1099-G from DEO shows exactly how much you received and what was withheld If you're concerned about your specific tax situation, I'd recommend talking to a tax professional who can review your documents.

Has anyone checked if Florida is doing any state-level tax breaks for unemployment? I know we don't have state income tax, but just wondering if there might be something else at the state level I'm missing?

Florida doesn't have state income tax, so there's no state-level tax refund for unemployment benefits. The only tax considerations for unemployment in Florida are at the federal level through the IRS.

Thanks everyone for clearing this up! Gonna call my tax guy tomorrow and double check everything. Pretty sure i just misunderstood what the DEO person was saying on the phone. At least i know not to expect any extra refund now!
