Missing $950 from NY unemployment tax refund even though I don't owe child support or debts
I checked my unemployment tax records and noticed I'm missing about $950 from what I should've received. Been getting partial payments that don't match what I'm owed. I definitely paid taxes on all my unemployment benefits but received less than what was withheld. Don't have any child support obligations or outstanding debts, so there's no reason for money to be taken out. My federal tax return was also about $950 less than what should've been refunded based on my calculations. Not sure if they've already processed my refund adjustment or if it's still pending somewhere in the system. Has anyone else experienced this? How do I figure out where my money went? Getting pretty frustrated with the whole process.

Did you check your payment history on the NYSDOL website? Sometimes they withhold more than they should, happened to me last August. You might wanna call and ask them directly because they won't fix it automatically.

I tried calling like 15 times and cant get thru to a real person. just automated messages and then it hangs up on me 😤

That's because trying to call them directly is just asking for pain. Try Claimyr.com - they'll call for you and connect you when someone answers. Saved me hours of frustration.

100% worked for me. I was in the same boat - needed to talk to someone about missing money. Got a callback within 2 hours and got it resolved the same day.

After 3 weeks of trying to reach NY unemployment about missing money, I finally got through using claimyr.com - they called for me and put me through to an agent when they answered. talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast, can't believe I wasted so much time before finding this. Check out how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

This sounds too good to be true... how does this even work? Are you sure its not a scam?

Not a scam at all. They basically stay on hold for you and call you when a real person picks up. I wasted like 20+ hours trying to call before finding this.

wait so ur saying some app can get thru the phone lines faster than me doing it myself? how tho?

They don't get through faster - they just do the waiting for you. So instead of you being on hold for 3 hours, their system does it. Then they connect you when someone answers.

I used it last month, worked exactly as advertised. Had been trying for weeks on my own with no luck. Got a callback in about 90 mins.

There's a good chance they applied some of your refund to previous tax debts or other State of NY obligations you might not even remember. They will rarely tell you about this unless you specifically ask. Call the Tax department directly, not unemployment.

CHECK YOUR MAIL CAREFULLY! I almost threw away what looked like junk mail but was actually a notice explaining why they reduced my refund. Turns out they claimed I had a $600 overpayment from 2021 that I never knew about.

omg i should do that. I probably threw it away with all the other mail 🤦♀️ they should email this stuff

If u threw it away, you can still login to ur online account and check notices section. Should be there too.

Here's what I would do to find your missing $950: 1. First, check your online account for any notices or explanations about adjusted payments 2. Look at your bank statements to confirm exactly what you received vs what was expected 3. Call NY unemployment directly to ask about the discrepancy - but getting through is nearly impossible on your own 4. Use claimyr.com to get a callback from an actual agent (this is what finally worked for me after weeks of trying). They call for you and connect you when someone answers. 5. Ask specifically about any offsets, adjustments, or withholdings on your account 6. Request a written explanation of all deductions 7. If they can't explain it, file a formal appeal (you only have limited time to do this) In my experience, there's almost always an explanation, but getting someone to tell you what it is requires actually talking to a human. The online system just doesn't show these details clearly. Good luck! The system is frustrating but persistence pays off.

This is really good advice. I'd add that you should also check with the IRS directly because sometimes it's a federal issue, not NY state.

Did u check if they took out money for health insurance? Sometimes they automatically deduct for that and dont make it obvious.

No i didnt have health insurance thru them. opted out of all that

Same EXACT thing happened to me. Turned out I had a parking ticket from 3 years ago that somehow turned into a $800 debt with penalties. NY unemployment automatically garnishes for ANY state debt. Check with DMV too.

the tax witholding rate on unemployment benefits is often lower than your actual tax rate, so at tax time you might owe more than was withheld. cud be why ur return is less

but I should have gotten money BACK because of the tax law change for unemployment benefits, not owed more...

Gotta vent - ny unemployment system is BROKEN AF and will rob you blind if you don't watch them like a hawk 🤬 Everything's "automated" until it's time to fix their mistakes, then suddenly nothing can be done without 50 phone calls

Literally the worst system I've dealt with. And I once had to renew my passport during a government shutdown lol

yo I had same issue actually turned out to be a good thing. They hadn't processed my adjustment for the unemployment tax exemption yet. Got a random check about 8 weeks after my regular refund for the difference. Maybe you'll get yours separately too??

like 2 months after my regular tax refund? it was weird cuz they sent zero notification, just a random check in the mail lol

anybody else noticed how they're SO FAST to take money when they think you owe them but take MONTHS to give you what they owe you? 🤔 make it make sense

It's by design. They count on people giving up.

fr tho. i was owed backpay for 6 weeks and they were like "8-12 weeks processing time" but when they thought I was overpaid by $200 they IMMEDIATELY reduced my payments 💅

Have you moved recently? They might have sent an important notice to old address. Also check spam folder if you signed up for electronic communications.

Honestly from what I understand the whole unemployment tax refund thing is still a mess. Some people got their adjusted refunds automatically, some got separate checks, some had to amend returns... there's no consistency AT ALL with how NY is handling it
