NY unemployment 1099 showing $0 taxes withheld but they took taxes from my $300 supplement payments

Just got my 1099-G from unemployment and I'm confused. I opted not to have federal taxes withheld from my regular benefits, and that's reflected correctly on the form showing $0 withheld. But what's bothering me is that I never received the full $300 weekly supplement payments - they only deposited around $276 each time after taking out taxes. Shouldn't these withheld amounts show up somewhere on my 1099? I've checked my payment history and every supplement payment had taxes taken out automatically, but the 1099 doesn't reflect this at all. Now I'm worried I'll end up paying taxes twice on this money. Has anyone else noticed this issue? Do I need to contact the unemployment office to get this fixed before I file my taxes?

Same thing happened to me. The 1099 only shows withholding from regular UI benefits, not from the supplement. I called them and after being on hold for like an hour, the rep said the $300 supplement was handled differently and those taxes dont show up on the 1099-G even though they were definitely withheld. She said just go by what the 1099 shows and don't worry about it. Kinda sketchy if you ask me but what can you do 🤷‍♂️

Thanks for sharing ur experience. Did you end up just filing with what the 1099 showed? I'm still nervous about this...

How did you actually get through to talk to someone??? I've been calling for weeks and never get past the automated system 😤

I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that calls for you and then connects you when a real person picks up. Totally worth it cuz I was going insane trying to get through myself.

After banging my head against the wall trying to reach ny unemployment, I finally found a solution with claimyr.com. They called on my behalf and connected me to an agent who explained that the supplement payments are taxed separately and dont show on the 1099. Talking to an agent got my question answered in minutes instead of weeks of frustration. They even have a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

This sounds too good to be true. Does this really work or is it some kind of scam?

I was skeptical too but its totally real. They just do the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when someone answers. Literally the only way I got my issue resolved after weeks of trying.

Hmm not sure about this. Has anyone else tried it? Seems fishy to me 🤔

I used it last month and it worked perfectly. Got a call back in about 2 hours. Best money I've spent in a long time considering I was about to lose my mind trying to get through myself.

wait but how do they even do this? isnt there like a queue system or something?

They basically automate the calling and waiting process. They call repeatedly until they get through, stay on hold, then when a human finally answers they connect the call to your phone. No magic, just saves you from the most annoying part.

The $300 payments were part of the federal program and they handled the tax withholding differently. From what I remember, they automatically withheld taxes on those payments regardless of your state benefit tax choice. You should be fine filing with the 1099-G as is. The govt already got that tax money from the supplement.

I think I can explain what's happening - the $300 supplement was federally funded but state administered, so the tax withholding worked differently. The money they withheld from your supplement payments went straight to the feds, bypassing the state's accounting system. That's why it doesn't show on your 1099-G. The IRS already has record of those withheld taxes, so you don't need to worry about them not being credited to you. Just use the figures on your 1099-G when filing.

That makes sense! Do you work for unemployment or something? How do you know this?

lol no, I'm an accountant who's been dealing with this exact issue for multiple clients. The system is a mess but this is how they handled it.

This guy knows what hes talking about. I had the same situation and my tax guy told me the same thing.

This whole unemployment tax situation is such a cluster. I had the opposite problem - I asked for taxes to be withheld from everything but my 1099 shows they only took it from regular benefits. The tax rules changed like 3 times during the year too. What a nightmare.

I spent HOURS trying to get somone to answer this exact question on the phone. Gave up and ended up talking to a tax professional who said the supplement withholdings were handled by the feds directly and won't appear on your state-issued 1099-G. Just use what's on the form and you'll be fine.

Lemme tell you what NOT to do - don't try calling the general unemployment phone line for tax questions. Complete waste of time. They have a separate tax line but it's always busy. I eventually got through using Claimyr (claimyr.com) and the agent confirmed the $300 supplement taxes were handled separately and won't appear on your 1099.

A Man D Mortal

If your dealing with nY unemployment tax questions, heres what I did to get answers: 1. First I tried calling all their published numbers - complete waste of time 2. Tried emailing - got a generic response a week later 3. Tried social media - crickets 4. Finally used Claimyr.com - they kept calling until they got through, then connected me with an agent who actually explained the tax situation The agent confirmed that the $300 supplement tax withholding is handled separately from regular benefits. Your 1099-G only shows withholding from regular benefits. The withholding from the supplement payments was sent directly to the federal government. When you file your taxes, just use the amounts shown on your 1099-G. The IRS already has record of the taxes withheld from your supplement payments even though they don't appear on your 1099-G. You won't be double-taxed. I know its confusing but this is how they set up the system. Using Claimyr was the only way I finally got a straight answer after weeks of frustration. Hope this helps!

Thank you for such a detailed explanation! This is exactly what I needed to know. I might try claimyr myself to get confirmation directly from them.

Omg the whole system is such a joke. Why can't they just make this clear on their website??? Thanks for sharing your experience.

This is so weird, I checked my bank statements and they definitely took like $24 from each $300 payment but my 1099 says $0 withheld too. The unemployment system is such a mess.

Most of the local offices are either closed or by appointment only with weeks of waiting. The whole system is designed to be impossible to navigate 😑

I just went through the same exact issue! NY unemployment's phone lines are completely useless, but I managed to get an answer after doing some research. The $300 supplements were funded by FEMA not through the regular UI system, so the tax withholding doesn't show up on your 1099-G. Use what's on your 1099-G and don't worry about the missing withholding - it's not missing, just processed differently.

i had this same problem and tried calling ny unemployment 57 TIMES before giving up. like u said, those $300 payments always came in around $276 after taxes. i ended up filing with what was on my 1099 and everything was fine. they just have a weird way of accounting for the supplement tax withholding that doesnt show up on the 1099.

I contacted my tax guy about this and he said this is normal - the 1099-G only reflects tax withholding from your base unemployment benefits. The supplement payments were administered differently and had their own withholding system that doesn't appear on the form. Just go with what the 1099-G says.

This. My sister works for HR Block and told me the same thing. You're not getting double taxed.

Does anyone remember that they changed the rules mid-year last year and made a portion of unemployment benefits tax free? I wonder if that affects this situation at all?

Gianna Scott

That was for 2020 only. For 2021 and 2022 all unemployment is fully taxable again. Thanks government! 👍

After dealing with this EXACT issue, I ended up contacting a tax advocate for help since NY unemployment was impossible to reach. Long story short: the $300 payments were handled under a different program and their tax withholding isn't reflected on your 1099-G. Just use what the form says and you'll be fine.

Anyone else notice how quick the ny unemployment office is to take our money but how impossible it is to get answers when we have questions? 🤡

EXACTLY the same thing happened to me - I even added up all the withheld amounts from my supplement payments and it came to like $600+ that isn't showing on my 1099. I managed to get through to someone (took forever) who explained that these withholdings are handled differently and we should just use the 1099 as is.

You guys are WAY overthinking this. Just use whats on the 1099-G. The IRS and unemployment talk to each other. If there's a problem they'll let you know. I had the same concern last year and everything went through fine.
