PA UC tax documents - When will I get my 1099-G form for 2024 benefits?
Filed for unemployment back in March 2024 after my company downsized. I got benefits for about 4 months before finding a new job. This is my first time ever being on unemployment and I'm starting to gather tax stuff for next year. Will PA send me some kind of tax form for the UC benefits I received? I know they're taxable but I didn't request any withholding when I filed (probably a mistake). Anyone know when these forms typically arrive and what they're called? Also wondering if I'll owe a lot come tax time since nothing was withheld...

Yes, you'll receive a Form 1099-G from PA UC that shows the total benefits you received and any federal taxes withheld. They're typically mailed out by January 31st, but you can also access it online through your PA UC dashboard around the same time. Look for the 'View 1099-G' option under the 'More Services' tab. Since you didn't have taxes withheld, you will owe federal taxes on those unemployment benefits. They're fully taxable as ordinary income. Setting aside about 15-20% of your total benefits for taxes would be a safe estimate, but it really depends on your overall income for the year.

•Thank you! That's really helpful. So I'll need to wait until January to get this form before filing my taxes. Is there any way to check now how much I received total? When I log into my dashboard I can't seem to find payment history older than 2 months back.

THEY NEVER SENT MINE LAST YEAR!!! had to call like 50 times and finally got through in MARCH!!! By then I was already late filing my taxes and had to file an extension. The system is completely broken. Set a calendar reminder for feb 15th to start calling if u dont have it by then.

Just to add to what others have said - you can actually request a duplicate 1099-G for 2024 starting in February through your online account. Go to www.uc.pa.gov > log in > select "More Services" from the left menu > then click "View 1099G". And yes, they're typically mailed by January 31st, but the online version is usually available a week or two earlier. I always use the online version since mail can be unreliable. As for taxes - since you didn't elect to have federal taxes withheld (which would have been 10%), you'll need to pay those taxes when you file. Pennsylvania doesn't tax unemployment benefits at the state level, so that's at least some good news.

•Oh that's a relief about the state taxes! I'll definitely check online first then. Do you know if I need to do anything special when filing my taxes, or just enter the 1099-G info like I would with a W-2?

If you need your payment history before the 1099-G arrives, try this: Log into your dashboard > click on "View Payments" > then look for the date filter at the top - you can change this to show older payments. If that doesn't work, you might need to submit a request for your payment history through the message center. Select "Payment Information" as the subject. Also, just so you know, the tax situation isn't terrible. The 1099-G will just be entered as income on your tax return. Most tax software has a specific section for unemployment compensation where you'll enter this info. But since you didn't have taxes withheld, plan to either have extra withheld from your current job's paycheck or make an estimated tax payment to avoid a penalty.

•Thank you - I found the filter option! Looks like I received $9,840 total from March through July. I guess I should put aside about $1,500-2,000 for taxes on that amount. I appreciate everyone's help!

•I got regular UC benefits. I was completely laid off until I found a new job. But good to know partial benefits still require a 1099-G!

•Thank you for the tip! I definitely made less this year with the layoff so I'll look into that.
