NY unemployment system incorrectly calculating my income way higher than actual hours worked

Completely confused by what's happening with my NY unemployment claim. I submitted my certification yesterday and reported that I worked only 14 hours last week at my part-time job. But when I checked my account today, the system shows I earned $592 which is absolutely wrong! I only made around $210 total. This incorrect calculation is causing me to not receive any benefits for the week. I double-checked my entries multiple times and everything was entered correctly. I've tried calling the unemployment office but can't get through to a real person. Has anyone else experienced this kind of calculation error? It's seriously stressing me out because I need that unemployment money to pay rent next week.

Yep, happened to me too! System showed I made $630 when I only worked 12 hours at $16/hr. No way I made that much. Had to call like 50 times before getting through to fix it. The system is completely broken rn 🤦‍♂️

Did you finally get it fixed? How long did it take? I'm freaking out because rent is due next week.

0 coins

It took like 3 weeks total. But after I talked to someone they were able to fix it within a few days and I got backpay. Keep trying to call!

3 WEEKS?? omg I can't wait that long. Did you try any tricks to get through faster?

I actually used this service called claimyr.com that got me a callback from unemployment. Saved me hours of redial hell. Got a real person on the phone same day.

After dealing with this EXACT same problem for weeks, I finally found a solution! Used this service called claimyr.com that got me connected with an actual person at unemployment in under an hour. They fixed my incorrect wage calculation on the spot and released my payment. Honestly it was the best decision I made after wasting days trying to get through on my own. I was skeptical at first but talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast. Check out this video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

wait seriously? does this actually work? i've been trying to reach someone for 2 weeks now 😫

100% worked for me. I was connected with a real human who actually fixed my problem right away. I was shocked after weeks of frustration.

another miracle solution that probably doesn't work 🙄 nothing works with NY unemployment

I get the skepticism - I felt the same way. But it's literally just a service that does the waiting on hold for you, then calls you when a real person picks up. Saved me from losing my mind hitting redial all day.

not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these never actually work in real life

This isn't a hack though. It's just a service that waits on hold so you don't have to. When an agent answers, they connect you. Pretty simple but saved me hours of frustration.

This is a widespread systemic issue right now. The NY unemployment system is using some kind of flawed calculation for partial benefits. I'm an accountant and I've seen this with multiple clients. They're somehow multiplying hours worked by a default rate that's way higher than what people actually make. Your best option is to keep detailed records of your actual hours and pay, then dispute it.

0 coins

Thanks for the explanation! Do you know if they'll eventually fix it system-wide or do I need to contact them individually?

0 coins

You definitely need to contact them individually. I've seen no indication they're fixing it system-wide. Document everything - hours, pay stubs, etc.

0 coins

The exact same thing just happened to me!!! System says I made $576 but I only worked 15 hours at $14/hr which is only $210. This is the third week in a row with this issue. I've been surviving on credit cards. NY unemployment is a complete disaster 😡

So I work in IT (not for unemployment lol) but I think what's happening is the system is multiplying your hourly rate by 4x because of some software glitch. That would explain why everyone's seeing amounts that are roughly 4x what they actually earned. Classic case of someone putting a decimal in the wrong place in the code or something equally stupid.

0 coins

That actually makes sense! My calculation was almost exactly 4x my actual earnings. Wonder if anyone at NYSDOL has noticed this pattern 🤔

Bureaucracy moves at a glacial pace. They probably know but fixing it requires approval from 12 different departments plus the governor's second cousin twice removed 😂

Here's a comprehensive solution based on what worked for me and others in this situation: First, document EVERYTHING. Keep all paystubs, timesheets, and take screenshots of your certifications. Second, you need to speak with an actual claims specialist who can override the system calculation. Regular call center people usually can't help with this specific issue. Calling the regular line almost never works because of the volume. After trying for weeks, I used claimyr.com which got me a callback from an actual agent. They manually adjusted my income calculation and released my payment. If you can't get through by phone, try the secure message system on the portal, but be extremely specific about the calculation error. Include your exact hours worked and actual pay. As a last resort, contact your state representative's office. They often have direct lines to unemployment office management. Hang in there - this is fixable but requires persistence!

Thank you so much for the detailed advice! I'll start with documenting everything and try to get through to an agent.

I second this advice. I had to do almost exactly this process. The key is getting to a claims specialist not just any random agent.

im in the same boat 😩 system says i made like $680 when i only worked 16 hrs at the grocery store. cant pay my electric bill now. ny unemployment = 🗑️

I actually just resolved this exact issue yesterday! It was a nightmare but here's what worked: you need to request a "wage recalculation review" - those exact words. Regular agents will just tell you to wait, but if you specifically ask for this, they have to process it. Got my correct payment 2 days later.

0 coins

Is that really a thing? I've never heard of a "wage recalculation review" before

0 coins

Yep! It's buried in their procedures manual but it's definitely a real thing. The agent I spoke with knew exactly what I was talking about when I used that specific phrase.

0 coins

Cool thx - gonna try that tomorrow!

Ok so PSA everyone: THIS IS A KNOWN GLITCH that started about 3 weeks ago. I have a friend who works at NY unemployment (not posting their name for obvious reasons). They told me there was a software update that messed up the partial benefit calculation. They're aware of it but the fix is taking time to implement. If you get through to an agent, they can manually override it.

0 coins

OMG thank you for this info!! Do you know when they expect to have it fixed?

0 coins

My friend wasn't sure exactly when it'll be fixed system-wide. Could be days or weeks. Best to get individual help if you can.

0 coins

This happened to me too! I think they're deliberately messing up the calculations to deny benefits. My conspiracy theory brain is ON FIRE 👀

0 coins

Not everything is a conspiracy lol. Government IT systems are just notoriously bad. Never attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence.

0 coins

idk man, seems REALLY convenient that the "glitch" always works in their favor and never overpays us 🤔

0 coins

Fair point actually lol

0 coins

GUYS! I just got off the phone with unemployment (miracle of miracles) and they confirmed it's a system-wide issue they're working to fix. In the meantime, they can manually adjust your weekly certification if you can actually reach someone. The problem is getting through...

0 coins

How'd you manage to get through? I've been calling for days!

0 coins

Honestly? I used claimyr.com and had a callback within 45 minutes. After days of trying to call myself, it was worth every penny.

0 coins

I used to work at the call center (quit 6 months ago). Here's what's probably happening: There's a default override rate in the system that activates if certain fields don't translate correctly between systems. It's supposed to be a failsafe but obviously it's creating more problems. You NEED to talk to a Tier 2 specialist to fix this - regular agents can't access that part of the system.

0 coins

Am I the only one who finds it completely INSANE that we're all just accepting this broken system?!! In what world is it ok that we can't reach anyone, the system makes errors that cost us money we need for FOOD AND RENT, and we're all just sharing workarounds? The whole thing needs to be rebuilt from scratch!

0 coins

tell me about it. i've been dealing with unemployment issues for 8 months now. its a complete dumpster fire 🔥

Welcome to government in America lolol. First time?

0 coins

😂😭 NOT my first time but somehow I'm still shocked every time by how bad it is
