NY unemployment benefits showing $0 but 26 weeks remaining - what's going on?

I checked my NY unemployment account this morning and I'm completely confused! It says I have 26 weeks of benefits remaining, but the weekly benefit amount is showing $0.00. I was approved just last week and my monetary determination letter said I would get $504 weekly. I triple-checked all my work history entries and everything was correct when I applied. Has anyone else seen this before? Is this some kind of system glitch or did I do something wrong during my application? I tried calling but gave up after being on hold for 2 hours...

yea this happened to me too! the system is so messed up right now. mine showed $0 for almost 10 days then suddenly updated with the right amount. didnt get any notification either, it just fixed itself

That's somewhat reassuring. Did you have to call them or do anything to make it update?

nope, just waited. the website is trash tbh

Check if you got a message in your inbox about needing to verify identity. The same thing happened to my cousin last month and it was because they needed extra verification docs.

Thanks for the suggestion. Just checked and don't see any messages asking for verification. My inbox is completely empty actually, which seems weird.

This is actually a common issue in the NY unemployment system in 2025. There are two likely explanations: 1. The system may still be processing your claim despite showing approval. This happens when there's a discrepancy between the automated approval and the final review process. 2. There could be a wage verification hold that wasn't clearly communicated to you. The system sometimes places a temporary $0 while verifying employment details with previous employers. In either case, you need to speak with an actual claims specialist to resolve this. The system won't correct itself in all cases, contrary to what some might experience.

Thank you for this detailed explanation! Do you know how long the wage verification usually takes? I'm getting worried because I have bills coming up next week.

Wage verification typically takes 5-7 business days, but with the current backlog it can stretch to 14 days. For your bills situation, I would recommend trying to reach a specialist as soon as possible rather than waiting for the system to update automatically.

UGH. The NY unemployment system is GARBAGE!!! I had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM in January and spent WEEKS trying to get it fixed!! This is how they operate - approve you then make it impossible to actually get money. Classic bureaucratic nonsense. They're HOPING you'll give up.

That's what I'm afraid of! Did you eventually get it resolved? If so, how?

0 coins

Yeah but only after I finally got through to an actual person. Took forever. The website will NEVER fix itself no matter what people tell you. They say that to keep us from calling and overwhelming their understaffed call center.

I work with unemployment cases frequently, and I can tell you this is almost always due to one of two things: either (1) a wage discrepancy between what you reported and what your employer reported, or (2) an identity verification flag in the system. In both cases, your claim looks approved because it technically is, but the payment is held at $0 until these issues are cleared. Unfortunately, this requires speaking with a claims specialist directly. Call first thing in the morning (7:55am) right before they open at 8:00am. The queue fills up quickly.

Thank you for this! I'll try calling first thing tomorrow morning. Is there anything specific I should mention when I get through to jump straight to resolving this issue?

When you get through, specifically ask for a "payment hold review" rather than just explaining the problem. This directs them to check the specific flags on your account that might be causing the $0 amount. Also have your monetary determination letter handy so you can reference the approved amount.

I've been dealing with NY unemployment since 2024 and honestly I've tried everything to reach them when I had issues. After countless failed attempts calling at different times, I found this service called Claimyr that got me through to an agent in less than 30 minutes when I'd been trying for days! You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - their website is claimyr.com. It was such a relief to actually talk to someone who fixed my $0 balance issue right on the call.

Is this legit? Seems sketchy that a third party can get you through faster

Totally legit. They use some tech that holds your place in line I think. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for days. It worked exactly as advertised - got through to an actual NYSDOL agent who fixed my claim.

Thank you for sharing this! After trying to call all morning with no luck, I might give this a try. Did the agent actually fix your issue on the spot?

0 coins

Yes! The agent saw that there was a wage verification flag on my account that was preventing payments. She removed it right while I was on the phone and my account updated to the correct amount the next day.

This happens alot ugh. One thing nobody mentioend - check if your claim shows "effective date" correctly. Mine said $0 but it was becus the effective date was wrong and it was trying to pay me for weeks I hadn't even claimed yet lol. The whole system is a mess. When you get someone on the phone (good luck with that) make sure they check the effective date of your claim.

Interesting point about the effective date - mine shows last Monday which seems correct. But I'll definitely ask them to verify that too when I get through.

i just remembered another thing - do you work multiple jobs? my friend had this happen because he had 2 jobs and one of the employers didnt respond to the wage verification thing

I did have two part-time jobs last year! That could definitely be it. One of them was a small company that isn't very responsive with paperwork.

Update - Were you able to get through to someone? If you had multiple employers, that's very likely the issue. The system will show $0 until all employer wage verifications are complete. If one employer doesn't respond within the timeframe, you'll need to provide additional documentation such as W-2s or paystubs from that employer.

I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned above and actually got through! You were right - it was because one of my employers hadn't responded to the wage verification. The specialist manually verified with my documentation and said my account should update in 48-72 hours. Thank you all for the help!

Glad you got it fixed! SAVE THAT AGENT'S DIRECT NUMBER if they gave you one!!! That's GOLD for future problems (and there WILL be future problems lol

Just wanted to add for anyone else reading this - I had a similar issue last month where my account showed $0 despite being approved. In my case, it was because I had moved recently and there was an address verification flag that wasn't clearly communicated. The system basically put a hold on payments until I could verify my current address with documentation. Once I provided a utility bill and lease agreement, it was resolved within 2 days. So if you've moved recently or have any address discrepancies between your application and your ID, that could be another reason for the $0 amount!

0 coins

That's a really good point about address verification! I didn't even think about that as a potential issue. It's crazy how many different things can trigger these payment holds and they don't clearly communicate what's wrong. Thanks for sharing your experience - this whole thread has been super helpful for understanding all the different reasons this $0 issue can happen.

This thread is incredibly helpful! I'm dealing with a similar issue right now - approved for benefits but showing $0 weekly amount. Based on what everyone has shared, it sounds like there are so many different reasons this can happen (wage verification, identity verification, address issues, multiple employers not responding, etc.). It's frustrating that the system doesn't clearly tell you WHY it's showing $0 or what specific steps you need to take to fix it. The fact that @Laura Lopez got it resolved by actually talking to someone confirms what others have said - you really do need to speak with a specialist rather than hoping the system fixes itself. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and solutions!

Exactly! This thread really shows how broken the communication is in NY's unemployment system. They'll approve you but then leave you guessing about why you can't actually get paid. It's like they designed it to be as confusing as possible. I'm bookmarking this thread because it covers pretty much every scenario that can cause the $0 issue. Hopefully more people find this when they're searching for answers instead of spending days on hold trying to figure out what went wrong!
