NY unemployment benefit amount increased after 26 weeks - what does this mean?

I'm confused about my NY unemployment benefits and hoping someone understands what's happening. I know I've used my 26 weeks already, and my benefit year ending (BYE) date is February 2025. But something weird happened with my account. Up until my last weekly claim, the maximum amount payable was always showing $14,616 (which matches the full 26 weeks). But this morning I checked my payment history and saw I received both the regular $564 and the supplemental $350 payments even though that would technically be my 27th week. I was surprised to get anything at all! Even stranger, now my maximum amount payable shows $21,924. Does this mean I somehow qualified for another 13 weeks through some extension program? Or does it just mean that IF they create a new extension program, I'd be eligible for more weeks until my BYE in Feb 2025? Has anyone seen their account do this? I'm confused but also don't want to call and accidentally trigger some review that takes away money I've already received.

The same exact thing happened to me last week! My balance went up by like $8000 even though I thought I'd hit my max weeks. I was too scared to call and ask lol. Did you get a message or anything in your inbox about qualifying for an extension? I didn't get any notifications but the money is definitely there in my account.

No messages at all! That's why I'm so confused. I checked my inbox and documents section and there's nothing explaining the change. Did you continue certifying? I'm worried about certifying again if I'm not actually eligible.

This sounds like you've been automatically enrolled in Extended Benefits (EB). NY recently triggered on EB because of the state unemployment rate. When that happens, eligible claimants can receive up to 13 additional weeks beyond their regular UI. The system should have sent you a notification, but sometimes those messages get delayed or go to spam. The increase in your maximum payable amount ($21,924) represents those additional 13 weeks at your weekly benefit rate. You should continue certifying as normal as long as you meet all eligibility requirements.

Thank you SO much for explaining! I was really confused. So I should just keep certifying weekly like normal? I don't need to do anything special to activate these extended benefits?

Yes, just continue certifying weekly as you've been doing. The system has already applied the extension to your claim automatically. Make sure you're still meeting all regular eligibility requirements (actively seeking work, able and available, etc.). You should eventually receive a letter confirming the extension, but the system processes the payments before the notices sometimes.

i think its a glitch in there system. my cousin had somethin similar happen but then they made him pay it ALL back 6 months later!!! be careful man

Oh no, that's exactly what I'm worried about! Did your cousin call them when it happened or just keep claiming?

he just kept certifying and getting paid. then boom they sent him a letter saying he wasnt eligible for some reason and needed to pay back like 8k. nightmare

The DOL might have activated the EB program, but you need to CHECK YOUR EMAILS and MESSAGES in your account!!! They usually send an official notice. Don't just assume you're eligible because the system shows more money!!! The NY unemployment system is NOTORIOUS for computer errors that they later try to reclaim. Trust me, I've been through this before.

I've checked my emails and messages multiple times - there's nothing there about this change. Should I just not certify until I get official notice? I really don't want to end up with an overpayment.

I work at a legal aid office that handles unemployment cases. What you're describing is consistent with the Extended Benefits program that was just activated in NY for 2025. The maximum benefit amount increase is exactly 13 weeks worth at your weekly rate, which confirms this. A few important points: 1. EB has additional work search requirements - you must complete and document at least 5 work search activities each week 2. You should receive formal notification within 7-10 days, but the system often applies the benefits before sending notices 3. The qualification is automatic if you exhausted regular UI and meet the eligibility criteria I would recommend continuing to certify but strictly documenting all your work search activities. The DOL has been conducting more audits of EB claims.

Thank you for the detailed information! I'll make sure to do 5 work search activities and keep detailed records. Is there a specific way I should be documenting these for EB versus the regular UI requirements?

The documentation method is the same, but be more thorough. Use the work search record on the NY DOL website or app to log each activity with complete information. Include contact names, application confirmation numbers, and detailed descriptions of networking activities. If you're called for an audit, having this level of detail will protect you from potential overpayment claims.

I had the EXACT same question last month!! I couldn't get through to ANYONE at unemployment to explain what was happening. I tried calling for THREE DAYS STRAIGHT and either got disconnected or was on hold forever and had to hang up because of work. It was making me so anxious. Finally I tried a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual agent in about 25 minutes! The agent confirmed I was automatically enrolled in Extended Benefits since the state's unemployment rate triggered the program. They explained everything and confirmed I should keep certifying. They have a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Such a relief to finally get a straight answer instead of guessing what was happening with my benefits!

That's super helpful, thank you! I've been hesitant to call because I've had the same experience with hours on hold. I'll check out that service since I would feel much better getting official confirmation before I claim any more weeks. Did they tell you anything about increased work search requirements for EB?

Yes! The agent specifically mentioned I needed to do 5 work search activities each week instead of the usual 3. She also said to keep detailed records because they audit EB claims more frequently. The peace of mind from speaking to an actual agent was totally worth it.

My experience with NY unemployment has been HORRIBLE. I wouldn't trust anything that shows up in your account without official confirmation. Their systems are ancient and constantly glitching. Call them directly and get confirmation before you certify for additional weeks - otherwise you could end up with an overpayment notice and they'll take it all back with penalties.

Ugh so true. My neighbor had to pay back like $5000 because of some glitch where the system let her keep claiming after she was supposed to be done. The stress isn't worth it!

I'm definitely getting anxious about this situation. Seems like half the people say it's legit Extended Benefits and half say it could be a system error that'll come back to bite me later.

had something similar with my claim last year...showed extra money but turned out i actually qualified for a different tier of benefits based on my previous employment or something. just keep certifying, if ur not eligible theyll let u know. unemployment is confusing af lol

Did you have to pay anything back when that happened to you? That's what I'm most worried about.

Update for everyone following this thread: NY Department of Labor just issued a press release confirming that Extended Benefits have been triggered due to the state unemployment rate. They're automatically enrolling eligible claimants who have exhausted regular UI. The additional 13 weeks will be available to those who meet criteria. Additional requirements include: - Must have exhausted regular UI benefits - Must be within your benefit year end date - Must complete 5 work search activities weekly (increased from 3) - Must document all work search activities The press release says notification letters are being mailed out in batches over the next 2 weeks, so many of you may not have received official notice yet, but the benefits are already being applied to eligible accounts.

Thank you for sharing this update! This makes me feel so much better about the situation. I'll definitely make sure to do the 5 work search activities each week and document everything carefully.

UPDATE: I got an official letter in my online inbox today confirming I've been enrolled in Extended Benefits! It explained the additional work search requirements (5 activities per week) and confirmed I'm eligible for 13 more weeks. Thanks everyone for your help with this confusing situation!
