NY unemployment system showing benefit year ended but I've only collected 8 out of 14 weeks?

I checked my ny unemployment account this morning and suddenly it's saying my benefit year has ended. I've only collected benefits for 8 weeks so far, and when I initially filed back in September they told me I qualified for 14 weeks total. I'm really confused because I should still have about 6 weeks of benefits remaining. Is this just a system glitch? The website has been acting weird lately. I tried calling the unemployment office but gave up after being on hold for over an hour. Has anyone else experienced this where your benefits suddenly get cut off before you've received your full entitlement amount? Should I just keep certifying anyway to see what happens?

I had the same problem last month! My benefit year wasn't supposed to end until July but suddenly in April the system showed it as expired. Turns out it was just a glitch in their system. Keep certifying each week and call them to fix it on their end. The ny unemployment system is notorious for these kinds of errors.

Did you eventually get it resolved? How long did it take them to fix it?

Yeah, took about 3 weeks tho. They backpaid me for the weeks I missed once they fixed it. Keep all your certification records!

I used this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual person at unemployment when I had this exact problem. They stayed on hold for me and then called my phone when they got an agent. Best money I ever spent to get my benefits flowing again! The agent was able to fix the system error in just one call. Check out their explanation video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

This sounds like a scam. Has anyone actually used this service before?

Not a scam at all. I was skeptical too but after 3 weeks of not getting through I was desperate. They don't ask for any personal info - they just call the unemployment office and connect you when someone answers. Saved me hours of hold time.

I've used it twice now. It works exactly as advertised - they call and wait on hold, then transfer you when a real person picks up. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? ive tried so many 'solutions' that were complete wastes of time

It 100% works. Their website is claimyr.com if you wanna check it out. All they do is handle the frustrating hold time so you don't have to.

I dont think its a glitch. My friend had the same thing and it turned out her benefit year really did end even tho she hadn't used all her weeks. Something about how they calculate the year from when you first applied not when you start collecting. Its stupid but thats NY unemployment for ya 🤮

The NYSDOL website is absolute garbage. Half the time it crashes when I try to login and the other half it gives me incorrect information. Your benefit year expires 1 year from when you initially filed, regardless of how many weeks you've actually collected. BUT you should still be entitled to those remaining weeks - you just might need to file a new claim to access them.

So do I have to completely start the application process all over again? Or is there a simpler way to just extend my current claim?

You'll probably need to file a new claim, but your remaining benefits from the old claim should carry over. The system wont let you do this automatically tho - you HAVE to talk to a rep.

Theres actually a whole process for this specific situation. When your benefit year ends but you still have unclaimed weeks, you need to file something called a transitional claim. Its not well advertised but I had to do it back in february. You def need to talk to someone though becuz the online system cant handle it right.

This 👆 is the correct answer. Had the same issue in March.

Have you tried logging in from a different browser? Sometimes the NY unemployment site has weird compatibility issues with certain browsers. Try Chrome if you're using Safari or vice versa. Might be worth clearing your cache too before you panic.

To clarify one important point: your BENEFIT YEAR is different from your BENEFIT ENTITLEMENT. The benefit year is a 12-month period from when you first file. Your entitlement is how many weeks you can collect within that period. If your benefit year ends with unused weeks, you generally need to reapply, but those extra weeks aren't automatically lost. Here's what you should do: 1) Take screenshots of everything showing your remaining benefits 2) Continue certifying weekly even if it looks like you can't 3) Contact an agent directly - this is absolutely necessary I was in the same boat and wasted weeks trying to figure it out myself. The online system can't properly handle year-end transitions with remaining benefits. I finally used claimyr.com to get through to a live agent who fixed it in minutes. They just call NYSDOL for you and connect you when someone answers - saved me hours of hold time. The agent can see your remaining entitlement in their system and can manually adjust things. Be prepared with your claim details and exactly how many weeks you've certified vs. how many you were approved for. They'll likely need to file what's called a transitional claim for you. Don't wait on this - the longer you go without resolving it, the more complicated the backpay can become.

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! I'll definitely take screenshots and keep certifying. I'm going to try that Claimyr service to reach someone since I can't afford to sit on hold all day.

Happy to help! Just make sure you have all your info ready when you talk to the agent. The more organized you are, the quicker they can fix it. Good luck!

This happened to me and I had to call like 37 times before I got through. The lady told me they had flagged my account for some random reason and that triggered the system to think my benefit year had ended. Took her like 2 minutes to fix once I finally reached someone. The whole system is just designed to make us give up.

Check yr email - sometimes they send notices about benefit year ending that explain what to do but they go to spam. I missed mine for like 3 weeks lol

I checked my spam folder but there's nothing from them. These departments really need to get better at communication.

Ngl those 6 weeks might be gone 4ever bro. I had a similar issue and despite everyone saying they'd fix it, I never saw that money. NY unemployment is a complete joke. They make it IMPOSSIBLE to get what youre owed.

Not true. I got all my remaining weeks after my benefit year ended. You just have to actually talk to someone who knows what they're doing.

whatever u do, DONT STOP CERTIFYING! even if the system says ur benifit year ended, keep doing ur weekly certification. When they fix ur account they can only backpay for weeks u actually certified for.

^^^THIS!!! So important. I learned this the hard way and lost 2 weeks because I didn't certify thinking my claim was over.

I work for a nonprofit that helps people with unemployment issues. This is a known problem in the system. Your benefit year is the 12-month period starting when you first applied, but your benefit entitlement (# of weeks) is a separate thing. If you've only used 8 of 14 weeks, you're entitled to the remaining 6. You need to speak directly with a claims specialist who can file a transitional claim for you.

Do you have any advice on the fastest way to reach a claims specialist? The phone lines are impossible.

Honestly, many of our clients have been using claimyr.com lately. It's one of the only reliable ways to get through. Otherwise, try calling right at 8am when they open or just before they close.

Dude the SAME thing happened to me last week!! Like exactly the same - 8 weeks used out of 14 weeks eligible and then suddenly "benefit year ended." I spent 4 hours on the phone and finally got through. They said it was a system error on their end. The rep reset something and my remaining weeks showed back up the next day.

you might have triggered a review flag in the system. did you start working part time or have any change in your income reporting? that sometimes causes the system to mistakenly end your benefit year early.

I did pick up a small side gig last month but reported the income on my certifications. Maybe that triggered something?
