NY unemployment stopped 4 months before my end date - anyone else?

So I've been collecting unemployment since February and everything was going smoothly until my payments suddenly stopped after July 15th. My benefit end date is supposed to be November 23rd, so I'm really confused why this is happening 4 months early. Every time I certify online, the system says I've successfully certified but then adds that my benefits will be exhausted with this payment. Makes absolutely no sense! I've been trying to call NY unemployment for weeks but can't get through to an actual person. The automated system just keeps telling me to check my payment history online, which shows nothing after July 15th. Has this happened to anyone else? Need to figure this out ASAP since I'm still job hunting and counting on these payments for rent.

Same thing happened to me but in may! My benefits were supposed to go until september but they just randomly stopped. Turns out they had calculated my total benefit amount wrong and I'd already used up all my money even though the end date was still months away. You probably need to check your monetary determination letter and do some math to see if maybe you've already hit your maximum benefit amount?

thx for responding! i checked my monetary determination and youre right - i think thats whats happening. But it still doesnt make sense because i was getting the same amount every week, how could they mess up the calculation so bad? Did you have to appeal or anything?

Nope, nothing you can do really. The end date they give is just the maximum possible time, but if your weekly benefit × number of weeks exceeds your total eligible amount, you hit the ceiling early. It sucks but it's how the system works 😩

this is correct. the system is designed to confuse peple. end dates are meaningless if you hit your maximum benefit amount first.

I finally got someone on the phone using this service called Claimyr. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent after trying for WEEKS to get through. They connected me with an actual person at ny unemployment who explained exactly what was happening with my claim and fixed it on the spot. Seriously, talking to an agent got my money flowing again within days - check them out at claimyr.com or watch this: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

wait does this actually work? seems too good to be true after all the time i wasted trying to call them 🤔

100% worked for me. I was super skeptical too but I was desperate after trying to get through for almost a month. They basically stay on hold for you and then call your phone when a real person picks up. Honestly it was the best decision I made - talking to a human solved everything in one call.

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

No catch lol. You pay them to wait on hold instead of you. I spent like 40+ hours trying to call myself before I found them. Do whatever you want but I got my issue fixed in one day after using it 🤷‍♀️

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? The unemployment phone system is like the 9th circle of hell

It worked for me two weeks ago. Got connected with an agent who fixed my issue right away. Beats spending your whole day on hold or getting hung up on repeatedly.

you probably exhausted ur total benefit amount. NY unemployment has 2 limits: time limit (ur end date) and MONEY limit (ur total benefit amount). whichever comes FIRST is when ur benefits stop. check ur monetary determination letter and multiply ur weekly benefit amount by the number of weeks u've been paid - bet u hit the total maximum.

They did this to me too!!!! Their system is SO messed up. I swear they do this on purpose to save money. My benefit year wasn't supposed to end until December but they cut me off in August. When I FINALLY got through to someone (took 3 weeks of calling), they said I had used up my maximum benefit amount. But no one ever explained that to me when I applied! 😡

THIS!!!! The amount of information they DON'T tell you is criminal. They make it confusing on purpose.

you can actually calculate this yourself. Take your high quarter earnings, look at the benefit rate chart, and then see what your total benefit amount should be. Usually it's 26 times your weekly benefit amount but can be less depending on your work history.

Check your payment history on the website and see if it says "maximum benefits payable" or something like that. This is why I HATE the ny unemployment system - they don't explain anything clearly. Your benefit year ending date is NOT the same as when your money runs out.

just checked and yep, it says "maximum benefits payable" 😔 wish they had made this clearer from the beginning instead of showing an end date that doesn't even matter

Ran into something similar back in March. Here's what's probably happening: Unemployment in NY has two different limits that affect when your benefits end: 1. Benefit Year End date (the October date you mentioned) - this is the MAXIMUM time you could potentially receive benefits 2. Total Benefit Amount - this is the MAXIMUM money you can receive Whichever limit you hit FIRST is when your benefits stop. Most people hit their total benefit amount before they reach their benefit year end date. The total benefit amount is usually 26 times your weekly benefit amount (WBA). So if your WBA was $504, your maximum would be $13,104. Once you've received that much, you're done regardless of the end date. To fix this, you need to: - Call and confirm you've exhausted benefits (good luck getting through - I used claimyr.com to finally reach someone) - See if you qualify for any extensions (though most have ended) - If you've worked since your original claim, you might be able to file a new claim The system is incredibly frustrating and explains things terribly. Hope this helps!

Thank you for this detailed explanation! Makes sense now, even though it's super frustrating. I'll try that claimyr site since calling clearly isn't working.

This is the most helpful explanation I've seen on here. I went through the exact same thing and wasted weeks trying to figure it out.

Do the extensions still exist? I thought all those pandemic programs ended?

You're right - most extensions have ended. Regular UI is back to just the standard 26 weeks maximum in most cases. The system reverted to pre-pandemic rules.

i think they jus dont want to pay people anymore lol. ny unemployment is the WORST. took me 3 months to even get approved then they cut me off 4 weeks early. the whole system is rigged against us 🤮

Classic ny unemployment move - they give you an end date but then cut you off early with no warning. When you try to call, you can't get through. When you send a message through the portal, they never respond. It's like they design the system to be as frustrating as possible so people just give up.

Seriously! I'm convinced they make it difficult on purpose to discourage claims. Less claims = less money they have to pay out.

It's all about da Benjamins baby 💰 The harder they make it, the more people give up, the more money they save.

You've hit your maximum benefit amount. The end date doesn't matter if you run out of funds first. It's super confusing but that's how the NY system works. You need to check your monetary determination letter to confirm.

Have you checked all your messages in the system? Sometimes they send you notices that explain why benefits stopped but they're buried in that awful interface. Also make sure you didn't miss answering any questionnaires they might have sent.

I've checked everything - messages, emails, even my physical mail. Nothing explains why it stopped early. From what others are saying it sounds like I hit my max benefit amount but they never communicated that clearly.

The only way to truly resolve this is to speak with an agent. After trying for weeks to get through the regular phone lines, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and actually got through to a real person who fixed my similar issue in minutes. It saved me so much frustration and the cost was nothing compared to getting my benefits straightened out. You can also try contacting your state representative's office - sometimes they can help push things through.

Quick question - when you go to your payment history, does it show any pending payments or does it just show nothing for those weeks? Also, have you been answering all the work search questions correctly? Sometimes they stop payments if they think you're not looking for work.

0 coins

-

Ava Martinez

It shows nothing for those weeks - like the certification was accepted but no payment was processed. And yes, I've been documenting all my work searches exactly the same way I have been for months.

Definitely sounds like you hit your maximum benefit amount then. The system accepts your certification but doesn't pay because there's no money left in your 'account'. Super annoying they don't make this clearer!

omg this JUST happened to me too!!!! i was supposed to get benefits until december but they stopped in august. when i FINALLY got through to someone (took foreverrr) they said i had used up my maximum benefit amount. the worst part is they neverrr explain this clearly when you apply!!! 😭

Ur BENEFIT YEAR END DATE is different from ur MAXIMUM BENEFIT AMOUNT. U only get 26 weeks max of regular UI in New York (unless there are special extensions which mostly ended). So if ur weekly benefit amount was $400, ur max total would be $10,400. Once u hit that, ur done regardless of the end date they gave u.

This makes sense, thank you. Wish they explained this upfront instead of showing an end date that doesn't actually matter if you hit the maximum amount first.

Contact your state assembly person or senator! Seriously, this worked for me when I had issues. Their offices have direct contacts at unemployment and can often get things fixed when you can't get through the normal channels.

yo this happened to me 2! ny unemployment system is straight garbage. biggest thing that helped me was using claimyr to get through to an agent (regular phone lines are impossible). once i talked to someone they explained i'd hit my maximum benefit amount even tho my end date was later. stupid system design fr 👎
