NY unemployment benefits ended but account shows 14 days left - no payment released

I'm seriously confused about my NY unemployment benefits right now. My benefits supposedly ended on March 15th, 2025, but when I check my account it STILL says I have 14 days left?? I certified last night at midnight like I always do, but nothing was released to my payment card this morning. Usually the money hits by 9am but there's nothing there. Has anyone dealt with this before? Is this a glitch in the system or am I misunderstanding something? Do I need to call NYSDOL to fix this? I really need this week's benefits to pay my electric bill.

This happens a lot with the NY unemployment system. The 14 days left is referring to the time remaining to certify for those weeks, not actually how many benefit weeks you have left. If your benefit year ended on March 15th, that means you've reached the end of your claim period. You'll need to call and speak with an agent to see if you qualify for an extension or need to file a new claim. I had the exact same problem last month and couldn't get through on the phone lines for days. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an agent in under an hour. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE. Saved me from a week of constant redialing.

Wait so those 14 days don't mean I have 2 more weeks of benefits?? That's so confusing! My benefit year ending means I can't get any more money even tho it shows days left? I'll try calling tomorrow morning. Thanks for explaining!

The NYSDOL system shows two different things that often confuse people: 1) Your BENEFIT YEAR - this is the 12-month period during which you can collect benefits 2) Your EFFECTIVE DAYS - this is how many days of actual benefits you have remaining If your benefit year ended on March 15th, then regardless of how many effective days show in your account, you've reached the end of your claim period. The system should automatically send you an email about filing a new claim if you're still unemployed. For the payment you certified for last night - if that certification was for a week that ended BEFORE your benefit year expired, you should still receive that payment even though your benefit year has now ended. If it doesn't come through in 3 business days, you'll need to call NYSDOL.

I certified for the week ending 3/15, which I guess was the last week of my benefit year. So I should still get paid for that week? It's now been 36 hours and still nothing in my account. I'm going to try calling tomorrow.

Yes, you should get paid for that week if it ended on 3/15 (the same day as your benefit year). Sometimes payments take 2-3 business days to process, especially if there's any kind of system flag or review. If you don't see it by Thursday, definitely call. And remember to file a new claim if you're still unemployed - don't wait because there could be a gap in your benefits otherwise.

I just went through this EXACT same thing!!! My benefit year ended Feb 28 but showed 8 days remaining. The system let me certify for that last week but the money never came. I called and the rep said that because my BENEFIT YEAR expired, I had to file a new claim even though I had days left. She said those days basically disappear when your year ends - which is TOTALLY UNFAIR btw. The worst part is I had to wait 3 weeks for my new claim to be processed before I got paid again. Start a new claim ASAP!!!

3 WEEKS??? I can't wait that long! Did they at least backpay you?

Yeah they did backpay but I had to specifically request it when I finally got through to someone. Make sure you mention that you need backpay for all weeks since your previous claim ended. Document EVERYTHING - take screenshots of when you certify each week while waiting for the new claim to process.

This is a common misunderstanding with the UI system. The days showing in your account reflect potential maximum entitlement, but they're constrained by your benefit year end date. When your benefit year ends, you need to file a new claim if you're still unemployed, and you must meet the eligibility requirements again. For your specific situation: 1. You should receive payment for any weeks properly certified before your BYE date 2. The delay could be because the system flagged your account for review since it was the final week 3. You should file a new claim immediately if you're still unemployed 4. Continue certifying weekly while your new claim processes If your payment doesn't arrive by Thursday, call NYSDOL at 888-209-8124. Try calling right when they open at 8:00 AM for the shortest wait times.

I wish they would explain this better on their website! I had the exact same confusion last year and ended up missing out on 2 weeks of benefits because I thought I was done when my benefit year ended, even though I had days left. The whole system needs better explanations.

To follow up on my earlier comment - I checked with a friend who works at NYSDOL (not giving names obviously). She confirmed that the final week's payment often gets delayed because it triggers an automatic review. If you're desperate to get through to someone, that Claimyr service I mentioned before costs about the same as a lunch but saves hours of frustration. Just wanted to clarify that the 14 days showing in your account are essentially worthless once your benefit year ends.

Thanks for checking! I actually just got off the phone with NYSDOL (waited 1.5 hours). The rep confirmed what everyone here said - my benefit year ended so those 14 days don't matter anymore. She said my final payment is "pending review" and should be released in 2-3 more business days. I went ahead and filed a new claim while I was on the phone with her. Thanks everyone for the help!

the whole system is messed up they should just make it simple but they want people to give up and not get benefits thats why they make it so complicated

Glad to hear you got through and got some answers! That 1.5 hour wait is pretty typical unfortunately. Just wanted to add for anyone else reading this - when you file your new claim, make sure you have all your employer information from the past 18 months ready, not just your most recent job. The system looks at your entire base period to calculate your new benefit amount. Also, if your new claim gets approved for a lower weekly amount than your previous claim, you might be eligible to stay on your old claim through something called a "transitional claim" - definitely ask about that when you call. Hope your payment comes through soon!

This is really helpful info about the transitional claim! I had no idea that was even an option. My new claim got approved but it's about $50/week less than what I was getting before. Do you know if there's a deadline to request the transitional claim or can I still ask about it even though I already started collecting on the new claim? I've only received one payment so far on the new amount.
