NY Unemployment effective days reset to zero? Can't pay rent next month!
I just checked my NY unemployment account and my effective days suddenly RESET to zero! I was supposed to have at least 42 days left according to my calculations. I've been claiming weekly since March 2025 without any issues until now. My last payment hit my account last Tuesday, but when I tried to certify yesterday, the system let me complete everything then showed 'You have 0 effective days remaining' at the end. I NEED this money to pay my rent next month! Has anyone else had their days reset randomly? Is this a glitch or did they cut me off? I've been trying to call for 2 days but can't get through to anyone. What should I do???

This happened to me back in January. It turned out that my benefit year had ended, and I needed to file a new claim. Check when you first applied - if it's been close to a year, that's probably what's happening. You'll need to reapply but there shouldn't be a gap in payments if you do it right away.

But I only started claiming in March of this year, so it's definitely not been a year. Could there be some other reason? I'm really freaking out about this!

Check if you got any messages in your online account inbox. Sometimes they send notices about exhausting regular UI benefits but you might qualify for an extension. Also, make sure you didn't miss answering one of the certification questions correctly - one wrong answer can cause your benefits to stop. You should keep trying to call, but early morning (7:30am) is the best time to get through.

Thanks, I checked my inbox and don't see anything new. I'm sure I answered all the certification questions right because it let me complete the whole process. I'll try calling at 7:30 tomorrow but I've already tried for 2 days with no luck :

I did pick up a few gig jobs in April, but I reported all the earnings each week. Would that really make ALL my remaining days disappear at once? Seems extreme...

This is actually a common issue. There are a few possibilities: 1. You may have exhausted your regular UI benefits and need to be automatically transitioned to Extended Benefits (EB) which is available in NY in 2025. This transition sometimes shows as 0 days temporarily. 2. There could be an identity verification flag on your account that needs to be cleared. 3. If you reported earnings over a certain threshold for several weeks, the system might have automatically closed your claim. 4. There could be a quarterly review happening on your claim. You definitely need to speak with a claims specialist. Keep calling the main number (888-209-8124) and pressing the options for 'existing claim' and then 'payment questions'.

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! This makes me feel a bit better. So it could just be the transition to Extended Benefits? How long does that usually take to sort itself out if that's the case?

If it's an EB transition, it usually takes 1-2 weeks to process automatically, but I wouldn't wait for that. You really need to speak with someone to confirm what's happening and make sure it's handled correctly. The transition isn't always automatic despite what their website claims.

After trying to call NYSDOL for 3 days straight with no luck, I used Claimyr.com to get through to an agent in about 20 minutes. They have this service where they call and wait on hold for you, then call you when they reach an agent. Totally worth it for me because I had a similar issue with my effective days disappearing. Turns out it was just a system glitch they fixed while I was on the phone. Check out their demo: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Is this a legit service? Sounds kinda sketchy to pay someone to call unemployment for you...

THIS SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY BROKEN!! I had the EXACT same thing happen in February and it took me 6 WEEKS to get it resolved!!!! The DOL is PURPOSEFULLY making it hard to reach them so people give up. They reset my days to zero with NO WARNING and then I couldn't get anyone on the phone. By the time I got it fixed I was already behind on my electric bill and car payment. The whole system is designed to FAIL US!

While I understand your frustration, I want to clarify that the system isn't designed to make people give up. They're understaffed and dealing with outdated technology. That said, it's absolutely critical to be persistent and document everything when dealing with benefit issues.

UPDATE: I finally got through to someone! Used the Claimyr service that was suggested and it actually worked - got connected to an agent in about 30 minutes. Turns out it was a system glitch related to the gig work I reported in April. The agent was able to fix it while I was on the phone and my effective days are showing correctly now (43 days). She said my payment for last week should process within 2-3 business days. Such a relief!!! Thank you all for your help!

Great news! Glad it was resolved quickly. I'd recommend continuing to take screenshots of your claim status and payment history just to be safe. System glitches can sometimes recur.

I had something similar happen last year, but mine was because I answered a certification question wrong. Just one mistake and they shut everything down. Make sure you're answering everything correctly each week. The wording can be tricky especially on the availability to work questions.

Thanks for the tip! The agent did mention they've updated some of the certification questions recently, so I'll be extra careful going forward.
