NY unemployment suddenly shows 100 effective days out of nowhere - what happened?

So I logged into my account yesterday to certify like I always do, and noticed something really strange. Last week my effective days remaining was at 0, but now it's suddenly showing 100 days! I've been on regular UI since April after my marketing position was eliminated. I haven't received any emails or notifications about this change. Is this a glitch or did they automatically extend my benefits? I'm worried about claiming this week in case there's some system error and they make me pay it all back later. Has anyone else experienced their effective days suddenly increasing without warning? I tried calling the hotline but kept getting disconnected after waiting 45+ minutes.

Ella Cofer

This happened to me last month! I went from 0 to 104 effective days. I was freaking out thinking they made a mistake and I'd get in trouble. Called and the agent said they implemented an automatic extension for people who exhausted their benefits. It's legit, don't worry. Just keep certifying like normal.

Oh that's a relief! Did they make you do anything different for the certification process after the increase?

Ella Cofer

Nope! Everything stayed exactly the same. Just certify like you've been doing all along.

wait really? I've been at 0 for 3 weeks now and nothing changed for me 🤔

It's rolling out in phases from what the agent told me. Some people get it right away, others might take a few more weeks. Keep checking your account!

After spending WEEKS trying to get through to someone at unemployment, I finally found a service that actually works! Used claimyr.com and they got me a callback with a live agent within an hour. Talking to the agent got my $ unlocked so fast - seriously the only way I actually reached a human. Check out their explanation video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

0 coins

-

Savannah Glover

No catch - just a service that calls and waits on hold for you. When they get through to an agent, they connect you. Saved me literal hours of hold music torture!

sounds like one of those ads that pops up everywhere. anyone ACTUALLY try this?

I used it last week after being on hold for 2+ hours myself with no luck. The callback came in about 40 mins and my issue got resolved same day. wish I knew about this months ago tbh

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

It's not some magic fix for your claim - it just gets you talking to an actual agent instead of endless hold music. That's it. Check their site claimyr.com

The system is so broken. I swear they do stuff like this on purpose to mess with us. One week everything's fine, next week some random change and no explanation. Classic NY unemployment 🤦‍♂️

From what I understand, this is the extension that was announced back in February. My brother works in government (not unemployment but adjacent) and he said they're rolling it out now because of the increased unemployment numbers. Should be totally fine!

0 coins

-

Ryder Everingham

This is correct. The extension applies specifically to claimants who exhausted their initial benefit period during the current fiscal year. It's part of the updated budget allocation.

wait but I thought they ended all the special extensions after the pandemic programs expired???

0 coins

-

22d

Aisha Jackson

This isn't related to the pandemic programs. It's a regular state extension that they implement when unemployment rates hit certain thresholds. Different program entirely.

I'm an expert on NY unemployment issues and can provide some clarity on this situation. What you're seeing is almost certainly the Extended Benefits (EB) program kicking in automatically. Here's what you need to know: The EB program activates when the state unemployment rate crosses a specific threshold for a sustained period. When this happens, people who've exhausted their regular UI benefits become eligible for additional weeks. What to do: - Continue certifying weekly as normal - You don't need to submit a new application - The payment amount should remain the same as your regular UI - You still need to fulfill work search requirements If you want to confirm this directly with NYSDOL (which I recommend), using claimyr.com is the fastest way to reach an agent without the hours-long wait times. They'll stay on hold for you and connect you with a live person. Also check your Message inbox on the unemployment portal - sometimes they send notifications there that don't come through email. Hope this helps!

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I didn't even think to check my message inbox.

Do I need to do anything special if I already started receiving the extended benefits?

0 coins

-

22d

Leo Simmons

Nope! Just keep certifying weekly like you normally would. The system should handle everything else automatically.

Is there a way to check if I'm eligible for this extension? My effective days are still at 0.

0 coins

-

22d

Leo Simmons

The system should automatically enroll you if you're eligible, but there can be delays in processing. If it's been more than 2-3 weeks since hitting zero, definitely call NYSDOL to check your status. Use claimyr.com to avoid the hold times.

Don't touch it!!! The same thing happened to my cousin and when she certified they flagged her account for fraud investigation! Took 3 months to fix!

0 coins

-

Taylor To

Oh no, that's exactly what I'm worried about. Did she have to pay anything back?

0 coins

-

22d

Kayla Morgan

Yeah she had to repay 2 weeks before they sorted it out. The system is such a mess rn

This is ridiculous advice. The extension is LEGITIMATE. Don't scare people with anecdotes that probably happened for completely different reasons.

I'm just sharing what happened to my cousin! Maybe it was for a different reason but better safe than sorry IMO

Your cousin probably had other issues with her claim. The auto-extension is a normal program feature.

take screenshots of EVERYTHING. everytime I log in to ny unemployment I document it all. they tried to say I didnt certify properly once and I had the receipts to prove them wrong.

Scarlett Forster

THIS!!! 💯 Document everything. I keep a folder with screenshots + dates. Saved my butt twice already.

Did you get a letter in the mail about this? I remember when I got an extension they sent me something in the mail first.

0 coins

-

Taylor To

No letter yet, that's part of why I'm confused. Maybe it's still coming?

0 coins

-

22d

Arnav Bengali

Probably. Their mail system is slooooow. I got my letter like 2 weeks after the change showed up in my account.

Actually its a common glitch in there system recently, happened to a few people I know. Won't affect your payments but if you try to claim all 100 days they'll hit you with an overpayment later. Call them ASAP to fix it.

Just call and check. No one here knows for sure what's happening with YOUR specific account. I used claimyr.com when I had a weird issue - they connected me to an agent in like 45 minutes when I had been trying for DAYS on my own.

0 coins

Derek Olson

what's claimyr? never heard of it

0 coins

-

22d

Rachel Tao

It's a service that calls unemployment for you and stays on hold. When they reach an agent, they call you and connect you. Saved me like 4 hours of hold time.

oh wow that sounds useful. gonna check that out

Congrats on the free money lol. Spend it before they realize there mistake 🤣

0 coins

This is terrible advice. They WILL make you pay it back if it's an error, plus penalties.

my effective days went from 7 to 107 last month with no explanation. I called and they said I qualify for Extended Benefits because the unemployment rate hit some trigger. You're good! Just keep claiming like normal.

Niko Ramsey

I haven't seen this specific issue but when I had problems with ny unemployment last month I finally got through using claimyr.com - they waited on hold and then connected me to an agent when one was available. Only way I could actually talk to someone after trying for weeks on my own.

not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these never work

0 coins

-

It's not a hack, just a service that waits on hold for you. Totally saved my sanity after trying to get through myself for days.

I can confirm this actually works. Used it twice, got through both times.

check your email spam folder. I bet they sent you something about an extension but it ended up in spam. happened to me.

Good idea! Just checked but nothing there unfortunately.

Lucky you! My account is still at 0 and I can't get through to anyone to figure out why I'm not getting an extension. Been trying for WEEKS.

0 coins

Try claimyr.com - it's the only way I could get through after trying for days. They wait on hold for you.

I work at a job center (not NYSDOL directly but we deal with them). This is almost certainly the EB program activation. New York's unemployment rate triggered the extension recently. It's legit - just keep certifying like normal.

Katherine Shultz

So let me get this straight, you're complaining about getting MORE unemployment days? Some of us can't even get our initial claims processed... 🤦‍♀️

0 coins

-

Taylor To

Not complaining! Just confused and worried there might be a mistake that could cause problems later.

Fair enough, sorry for jumping to conclusions. The system has us all stressed out.

omg this EXACT thing happened to me too!! logged in yesterday and BAM suddenly had 100 days. haven't gotten any emails or letters explaining it...

Yep certified yesterday. Went through normal, payment is pending just like usual. Seems fine so far!

Why does everyone run to reddit first instead of just calling unemployment? 🤦‍♂️ Literally a 5 minute phone call would answer this definitively.

0 coins

-

Taylor To

Have you tried calling NY unemployment lately? It's impossible to get through - I mentioned in my post I tried calling and was on hold 45+ minutes before getting disconnected.

Fair point, I take it back. The phone system is trash.

Use claimyr.com - only way I've been able to actually reach an agent in the past 6 months

0 coins

Talia Klein

This happened exactly one year after you first applied for benefits, right? That's when the system automatically evaluates you for a new benefit year. Totally normal.

0 coins

-

Taylor To

No, actually I've only been on unemployment for about 6 months, since April.

0 coins

-

22d

Talia Klein

Ah, then it's definitely the Extended Benefits program. Still normal, just different trigger.
