My ny unemployment effective days suddenly dropped to zero - am I cut off?
So weird thing happened when I was checking my payment history today. I noticed my effective days count has been dropping really fast lately. Started at 9 days about a month ago, then went down to 5 days two weeks ago, and now suddenly shows 0 effective days remaining. Does this mean I'm totally cut off from unemployment benefits now? I've been on regular UI since getting laid off in February (not pandemic related). Never got any notification about this happening or what to do next. Anyone else experienced this? Do I need to file some extension or am I just done now? Really stressing about this since rent is coming up next week.

Yeah, when your effective days hit zero, that means your benefit year is done. Traditional UI lasts for 26 weeks (that's about 6 months). After that, you're cut off unless there's some extension program running, which there isn't right now.

•Ugh, seriously? No warning or anything from them? That seems pretty harsh to just suddenly stop benefits without even sending an email or something.

•Welcome to the wonderful world of NY unemployment 🙃 They're not exactly known for their communication skills

•They actually do send a letter when you're getting close to the end, but it often arrives AFTER your benefits stop. Classic nysdol efficiency...

I was stuck in the same situation last month! Literally couldn't get thru to anyone on the phone for days. Finally I tried this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me a callback with a live agent within hours. Talking to the agent got my benefits sorted immediately - honestly it was the best decision I made to finally get my $ unlocked so fast. They have a YouTube explainer too: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Hmmm sounds suspicious. Does this actually work?

•Yeah it worked for me! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying to get through for 2 weeks straight. Got a call back in about 3 hours and the agent fixed my issue right away.

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I've tried calling like 50 times a day and nothing.

•It's not BS - they basically dial for you and wait on hold, then when a real person picks up they connect you. Saved me hours of hold music 🙌

•Listen I get the skepticism but when you've been on hold for 4+ hours a day for weeks, you'll try anything. This actually worked for me 🤷♀️

When you run out of UI, you're done unless you qualify for an extension. Right now there aren't many extensions available since the pandemic ones ended. You might be eligible for something called EB (Extended Benefits) but only if the state unemployment rate is high enough, which I don't think it is in NY right now.

I just dealt with this exact situation! Yes, once effective days hit zero that means your benefits are exhausted. You can check if you're eligible to file a new claim, but there's a rule that you need to have worked since your last claim began. The system is so frustrating I swear 😤

•I've been actively looking for work but haven't found anything steady yet. Just some gig stuff that barely pays. So I guess I'm just screwed now?

•Yep, that's pretty much how it works. It's brutal. The whole system is designed to eventually push you off. Time to start applying for literally everything 😔

ok so here's the ACTUAL breakdown on this: Effective days = how many days of benefits you have left. Regular UI gives you 26 weeks (104 effective days since they count 4 days per week) When you hit zero, your benefits are exhausted. Currently there are NO extension programs in place in New York. The pandemic extensions all ended, and the Extended Benefits program isn't triggered because NY unemployment rate isn't high enough. Your options now: 1. If you've worked since your original claim, you might be able to file a new claim (but there's a bunch of rules about how much you need to have earned) 2. Apply for other assistance programs like SNAP/food stamps 3. Keep job searching - the DOL has resources for job placement 4. Consider calling them directly to confirm there's nothing else you qualify for (though getting through is nearly impossible) I recommend trying claimyr.com if you need to actually speak to someone. It's a service that waits on hold for you and connects you with an agent. It saved me hours of frustration and actually got my issue resolved. Good luck - the unemployment system is incredibly frustrating, but don't give up!

•Thank you for this detailed explanation! This is super helpful. I might try that claimyr thing because I need to figure out if there's ANYTHING else I can do.

The NY unemployment system is complete trash. I've been thru this whole nightmare too. Zero warning, zero follow up, just suddenly no money and good luck figuring it out. This state is a joke sometimes.

•Literally the WORST. Took me 3 months to get my first payment and then they just cut me off with no warning too.

•NY is actually better than a lot of states believe it or not. Try dealing with Florida's system if you want true unemployment hell 💀

Check ur certifications. Sometimes the system glitches and doesn't show your correct remaining days. Log out completely, clear cache, and try again. That fixed it for me once when mine suddenly showed zero.

•Thanks - just tried this but still showing zero. I think I might actually be out of benefits 😭

Traditional UI benefits last 26 weeks MAXIMUM. That's it. Count how many weeks you've been collecting - if it's around 26, then yeah, you're done. System is working as designed (unfortunately for you).

This happened to me and I FREAKED OUT. Called them constantly for days with no answer. Eventually found out that yes, my benefits were exhausted, but I had enough work history in my base period to file a new claim. The trick is actually getting someone on the phone to help you figure out your options.

•How did you finally reach someone? I've been trying for weeks!

•I used claimyr.com - it's this service that calls for you and then connects you when they get a real person. Costs money but honestly worth every penny because I got my new claim started right away.

Even tho ur effective days are at 0, keep certifying every week! Sometimes they add extension programs and if you've been continuously certifying, you'll automatically get enrolled. If you stop, they might not backdate it.

I know this sounds dumb but have you tried calling the automated telephone system instead of checking online? Sometimes the website shows incorrect info. The phone system might show your correct days remaining.

•Good idea - just tried it and the automated system also says zero days. Ugh this is so frustrating.

You can try contacting your state representative's office. They sometimes have connections to get help with unemployment issues when you can't get through yourself. Just google your district rep and give their office a call.

•THIS!! My assemblyman's office got my claim fixed in 2 days after I spent 3 weeks trying on my own. Definitely worth trying.

Same thing happened to me back in December - zero warning, just suddenly hit zero effective days after being on UI for about 6 months. Turns out NY regular unemployment is exactly 26 weeks and that's it. No extensions available right now since the pandemic programs ended. I ended up having to scramble for temp work and food assistance. The lack of communication from NYSDOL is seriously messed up - they should at least send you a heads up when you're getting close to exhaustion. Really feel for you with rent coming up, that stress is real. Definitely try calling your local rep's office like someone mentioned above, sometimes they can at least clarify if you have any other options or help you get through to someone at DOL.
