NY Unemployment: 0 days remaining with weekly $182 benefit expiring December 2021 - what happens after benefits exhaust?

So I've been on unemployment since December 2020 and my claim is expiring in December 2021. Just checked my payment history and it shows I only have 0 effective days remaining after next week. My weekly amount is $182 and I had a maximum payable of $1000. According to my Official Record of Benefit Payment History for my Current Claim, my Start/Effective Date was 12/07/2020 and my Benefit Year Ending Date is 12/12/2021. Looking at my Latest Transaction(s) as of 07/23/2021, I last certified for benefits for the week ending 07/18/2021, and my payment for that week was released on 07/19/2021. I also noticed there's a note saying "Weekly payments for $600 showing "0" under the "Effective Days" column, and Debit Card or Direct Deposit under the "Type" column, are the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) payments." Does anyone know what happens when your days hit zero? Do I need to apply for an extension or something? Will payments just stop? The unemployment site is so confusing and I can't get through on the phone. I'm worried because my Effective Days Remaining shows exactly "o" on my payment history screen, but my benefit year doesn't officially end until December. Is there something I need to do now, or will the system automatically extend me since we're still in the pandemic?

Welcome to unemployment hell. once your benefit days hit zero, thats pretty much it. You might get an email about extensions but those have been super hit or miss. I'd try calling them asap before your benefits run out. Good luck getting through tho

Thanks. I was afraid of that. Been trying to call for 3 days with no luck. Just constant busy signals and hangups.

typical ny unemployment bs... they make it impossible to reach them and then act like its your fault when your benefits lapse 🤡

Yeah it is NOT worth your time trying to call. You'll just keep getting disconnected. Trust me on this one 😤

After struggling with the same issue, I finally got through using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They basically wait on hold for you and connect you with an agent when one is available. Talking to a real person solved everything - they extended my benefits right away. Honestly it was the best money I've spent considering how much was at stake with my benefits. Check out this video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? sounds like just another way to waste money.

I get the skepticism! Had the same thoughts. But it literally just calls for you and connects you when a real person answers. No personal info needed besides your phone # to call you back. Saved me like 4 hours of being on hold.

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol

Listen I was ready to give up after 2 weeks of calling. This thing got me through in under 2 hours. My benefits got extended the same day. Just sharing what worked 🤷‍♀️

So this really works? No catch? Man I've been trying to get through for literally 3 weeks

Worked for me! All it does is wait in the queue instead of you having to do it. When someone picks up, they call your phone and connect you.

I hit zero days in April and nothing happened automatically. Had to call them (took like 20 tries) and they manually did an extension. The rep told me the system is so backed up that automatic extensions aren't processing. You NEED to talk to someone.

Here's what you need to know about NY unemployment when your days hit zero: First, don't panic. When your effective days remaining hit zero, you're not necessarily cut off immediately. The system was designed to have extensions available based on the current unemployment rate. What you need to do: 1) Keep certifying every week even if your days show zero 2) Check your message inbox on the portal daily for notices 3) If you don't see an automatic extension within a week, you MUST call them The phone system is absolutely overwhelmed. I'd highly recommend using claimyr.com as others have mentioned - it saved me weeks of frustration by getting me connected to an agent who fixed my claim in minutes. Also, make sure your contact info is updated in the system so you don't miss any communications. Some extensions require additional documentation that they'll request via email. Don't wait until your benefits actually stop - be proactive now while you still have payments coming in.

Thank you so much for this detailed info! I'll definitely keep certifying. Do you know if I need to provide any specific documents for the extension?

For most regular extensions they just need verbal confirmation of your continued unemployment situation. But sometimes they ask for proof of job search activities, so keep records of any applications you submit.

Omg I literally just went through this last month!!! So annoying. When my days hit 0, I kept certifying anyway (even tho it felt pointless) and then after 2 weeks I got a random deposit and a message saying I was approved for extended benefits. But my friend had to call in to get hers fixed. System is mad inconsistent.

wait so you just kept certifying even tho ur days were at 0 and it just...worked? without calling?

Yep! But I think I got lucky tbh. My roomate had to call and fight with them for weeks to get hers fixed.

The zero effective days doesnt necessarily mean you're done. I hit zero in February and got automatically put on an extension. But that was months ago and they might have changed things. The whole system is designed to be confusing af 🤬

0 coins

-

Paolo Conti

That gives me some hope! Did you get any notification about the extension or did the payments just continue?

I got a message in my inbox on the website about a week after hitting zero, then the payments resumed the following week. But that was back in Feb so things could be different now

I noticed you said your claim expires next month - that BYE date is actually more important than the effective days remaining. When you hit your BYE date you DEFINITELY need to reapply.

0 coins

-

StarStrider

This!!! The BYE date is super important - it trumps everything else. If you hit that date without reapplying you're screwed.

0 coins

Paolo Conti

Oh I didn't even think about that! So I should be focused on the September end date more than the zero days? This is so confusing.

0 coins

-

22d

Anastasia Fedorov

Yeah the BYE date is when your whole claim expires regardless of days remaining. The system will tell you to reapply when it happens.

lmaoooo good luck calling them. I spent 2 months trying 😑 ended up using claimyr.com which was the only thing that worked

i just went thru this! after your effective days hit 0, u should get automatically rolled into an extension IF you qualify. but the system is buggy af so you might need to call. keep certifying no matter what.

0 coins

-

Luca Romano

How do you know if you qualify for an extension?

0 coins

-

22d

Zara Rashid

It depends on how long you've been collecting and if you've had any work during your benefit year. Most people qualify for at least one extension tho.

do NOT just wait for them to sort it out! My days went to zero and I waited thinking it would handle itself... ended up with no payments for 3 weeks before I finally got through on the phone. Be proactive!!!

Trying to reach NY unemployment is like trying to win the lottery while being struck by lightning during a sharknado 💀

My experience was that once I hit 0 effective days, I continued certifying weekly, and about 10 days later I got a message saying I was approved for extended benefits. But from reading here it seems super inconsistent. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best.

The 0 effective days is such a scam. If there's federal money available (which there is) you should get it automatically. But NY makes it so complicated on purpose so fewer people collect. Capitalism at its finest 🤮

what exactly does it do? just calls for you?

0 coins

-

QuantumQuasar

Yeah it basically uses auto-dialers to keep calling until it gets through, then calls your phone when it connects with a real person. Saved me hours of frustration.
