NY unemployment: Only 8 effective days left but BYE date is February 2022 - what happens when days run out?
I've been getting unemployment since February 8, 2021. My claim info shows a Benefit Year Ending date of February 13, 2022, but I only have 8 effective days remaining (basically just 2 weeks worth). What happens when I run out of effective days but I'm still within my benefit year? Do I automatically get more days or does everything stop? My weekly benefit amount is $600 and my last payment was processed on August 3 for the week ending August 1, 2021. The payment history shows it was released as a "Debit Card or Direct Deposit" payment. I've looked all over the NY unemployment website but can't find a clear answer about which one I should be worried about - the BYE date or the effective days running out. According to my claim info, it says: "Effective Days: Each day in a week (Monday through Sunday) that you qualify for benefits is called an effective day. There is a maximum of 4 effective days each week, and you must qualify for all 4 effective days in order to receive your total weekly benefit rate. For each day in the week that you are not eligible to receive benefits, you will receive one less effective day, which is equivalent to one fourth of your weekly benefit." I understand that effective days are basically how the system counts eligible days, with 4 days per week maximum. My current claim shows I only have 8 effective days remaining, and my latest transaction was certified for the week ending August 1, 2021. The system also mentions something about "Weekly payments for $600 showing '0' under the 'Effective Days' column, and Debit Card or Direct Deposit under the 'Type' column, are the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) payments." I'm just confused because my claim page shows I started on February 8, 2021, and the Benefit Year Ending Date is February 13, 2022, but with only 8 effective days left, I'll run out of benefits long before February 2022. Anyone dealt with this before?

In my experience, once your effective days run out, that's it - even if you're still in your benefit year. When mine ran out last year, I had to wait like 2 weeks and then file a new claim. The system is stupid confusing on purpose I swear 🙄

•This is the correct answer. Effective days are what matter. When they hit zero, benefits stop until you qualify for a new claim.

•Did you get a notification when they ran out? Or did you just stop getting money randomly?

•I got a message in my inbox on the unemployment site saying my benefits were exhausted. Then nothing deposited the next week lol

After struggling with the same problem last month, I found an awesome solution that actually worked! I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to a real person at the unemployment office. Talking to an agent got my benefits sorted out in ONE DAY after weeks of confusion. They connected me directly to a live agent who explained everything about my effective days and extended my benefits. Best decision I made throughout this whole unemployment nightmare! Check out their video here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Is this actually real? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach anyone at unemployment

•100% worked for me! I was super skeptical too, but I was desperate after trying for 3 weeks to get through. The agent I talked to even backdated my claim so I didn't lose any weeks.

•another day, another 'miracle solution' for unemployment... what makes this any different from all the other scams out there?

•Not a miracle - just a service that calls and waits on hold so you don't have to. When they get a real person, they transfer the call to you. Saved me hours of frustration and my benefits got fixed. But you do you 🤷♀️

Effective days are all that matters. Once those hit 0, your benefits stop completely. It doesn't matter if your BYE date is still months away - no more effective days = no more money. The BYE date is just the last possible date you could collect on THIS claim. Effective days are the actual counter of how much benefit time you have left.

So I just dealt with this EXACT situation. When your effective days hit zero, you'll get a message saying your benefits are exhausted. At that point, you need to CALL them (good luck with that 🙄) to see if you qualify for an extension. Don't just wait for the BYE date because nothing happens automatically.

•Did they give you an extension when you called? How long did that process take?

•Yeah but it took forever to get through. Had to call like 50 times over 3 days. Once I talked to someone it was quick - they just added more weeks to my claim. took about 20 min on the phone once i got through

•I've been trying to call for 2 weeks straight with no luck. Does anyone know a better way to reach them besides the main number?

•Try claimyr.com - they'll call for you and connect you when a real person answers. Only way I got through after weeks of trying.

The NY unemployment system is DESIGNED to be confusing and frustrating. Effective days are what you need to watch. Once they run out, you're done until you file a new claim (which you can only do after your BYE date). The whole system needs to be thrown in the trash and rebuilt from scratch tbh

•facts 💯 they make it complicated on purpose so people give up

•This is why I tell everyone to save EVERY piece of communication from them. They'll try to say you did something wrong when their system messes up.

Let me break this down for you with what I learned after being on unemployment for 18 months: Effective days remaining is the ONLY thing that matters for your current payments. Each effective day equals 1/4 of your weekly benefit amount. Once you hit zero effective days, your benefits stop immediately. The BYE (Benefit Year End) date is just the last possible date you can collect on your current claim - but you still need effective days available. When your effective days run out: 1. You'll get a message in your online account saying benefits are exhausted 2. You need to call NYSDOL to see if you qualify for an extension 3. If you can't get through by phone (extremely likely), try using a service like claimyr.com - it's what finally worked for me 4. If you don't qualify for an extension, you'll need to wait until after your BYE date to file a new claim The NYSDOL website is deliberately vague about this because they don't want to make it easy to get the benefits you're entitled to. I spent weeks calling hundreds of times before I got through using that calling service. Don't wait until you hit zero days - start trying to reach them now!

•This is the most complete answer 👆 I wish someone had told me this before my benefits ran out suddenly

•Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! I'm going to try reaching them tomorrow.

•That claimyr site really works? seems sketchy to give unemployment info to a third party

•They don't ask for any of your personal info - they just call and wait on hold, then connect you directly when a real person answers. Saved me 3+ hours of hold time.

My cousin works for unemployment (not in NY tho) and she says effective days are what matters. The BYE date is just the outer limit of your claim period. If you hit zero effective days, you need to call about extending your claim IF you qualify. Don't expect the system to do anything automatically - they literally designed it to be difficult 🤦♀️

•this!!! the whole system is designed to make people give up. my sister lost 3 months of benefits cuz she thought it would automatically extend

Both are important but in different ways. Effective days = how many days of benefits you have left. BYE date = when your current claim expires completely. If you run out of effective days, your payments stop regardless of BYE date. If you hit your BYE date but still have effective days, you'll need to file a new claim to keep getting benefits.

•exactly right - and they don't tell you this anywhere on the site! took me 6 calls to finally get this explanation

Anita George
•So basically I need to be proactive before my effective days run out? Seems like I should be calling now rather than waiting

Norah Quay
•YES! Call now before they run out. If you wait until they hit zero you'll have a gap in payments while they process any extension.

I swear the NY unemployment system changes their rules every other week 😤 But from my experience, once effective days hit zero, you're cut off immediately. Call NOW before that happens and ask about extensions. Don't wait!

Effective days trumps BYE date every time. Once you hit zero days remaining, the system stops paying regardless of what your BYE date says. I found this out the hard way when my payments suddenly stopped even though I had 3 months left until my BYE date.

•Were you able to get it fixed? I'm about to run into the same situation

•Yeah but only after I finally got through to a human. Took forever calling the regular number. Eventually I used claimyr.com to get connected and they fixed it that same day.

focus on the effective days remaining. when those run out ur done unless u get an extension. BYE date is just the calendar end of ur claim but u still need days left to get paid

I'm dealing with this exact same situation right now! I have 12 effective days left and my BYE isn't until March 2022. Reading through all these responses, it sounds like I need to call ASAP before my days run out completely. Has anyone had success getting through to unemployment recently? I've been trying the main number for days with no luck. Really don't want to end up with a gap in payments while they sort this out 😰
