NY unemployment benefit year ending but effective days at 0 - what do I do next?
So my effective days just hit 0 last week, but my benefit year doesn't end until 03/14/2023. When I checked my payment history it still shows that I have a balance. Last time I spoke with someone at unemployment they said I should just keep certifying even after hitting 0 effective days and payments would continue automatically. I think this happened to me like 8 months ago and I just kept certifying for about 2-3 weeks, then started getting my regular payments again. Just want to make sure I'm doing this right and don't need to file a new claim or something. Has anyone else dealt with this before? The system is so confusing sometimes.

Yep, just keep certifying every week like normal. The system sometimes has these weird hiccups where it shows 0 days but your benefits are still active until your benefit year ends. I went through the same thing back in November and after 2 weeks of certifying with no payment, it suddenly started paying me again. The rep I talked to said it was just the system doing some recalculation thing.

•Thanks for the reassurance! Did you get backpaid for those 2 weeks you certified without payment?

•Yeah I did! It all came together in one lump payment about 3 weeks after I hit zero. Just make sure you keep your certification history somewhere so you have proof if needed.

•This didn't work for me at all. Had to call them 😩 Took forever to get through

I was in this exact situation last month! After trying to get through on the phone for days with no luck, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual agent within an hour. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast - totally worth it after all the stress. They also have a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

•No catch, it just calls for you and stays on hold so you don't have to. When an agent picks up, it connects them to your phone. Saved me like 4 hours of hold time tbh

•hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

•It literally just does one thing - calls and waits on hold for you. That's it. After weeks of trying to get through myself, it was the only way I finally talked to someone who could fix my claim.

•I used this too! Agent cleared my issue in like 5 mins after I spent weeks trying to figure it out on my own

This is actually a thing with NY unemployment - they call it the 'transitional claim' process. What happens is when you hit 0 effective days but your benefit year isn't over, the system automatically reviews your claim to see if you're eligible for continued benefits. You don't need to file a new claim until your BENEFIT YEAR ends (not when effective days hits 0). Most important things: 1) Keep certifying every week without fail 2) Check your message inbox on the portal regularly 3) Make sure your contact info is up to date 4) If you don't see payments resume within 3 weeks, CALL THEM I've been through this mess twice and both times it resolved itself, but I know people who had to call. If you can't get through on the phones, claimyr.com is honestly the best service for bypassing the hold times. Just give them your number and they'll call you when they get an agent on the line. The NY unemployment system is basically held together with duct tape and prayers at this point 😂

I'm dealing with this right now too! Two weeks of certifying with no payment after hitting zero days. This whole system is trash 🤮

•Tell me about it. I think the system is designed to be confusing on purpose so people give up.

•100%. And then when you finally get someone on the phone they act like you're stupid for not understanding their broken system

You need to call them asap. Don't listen to people saying just keep certifying. My friend did that and ended up missing out on 6 weeks of benefits because something was flagged in the system that needed manual review.

•Thanks for the heads up. Did your friend get all the back weeks paid eventually?

•Eventually yes but it took almost 2 months to sort out. Better to just call now and fix it early. Save yourself the headache.

•This ⬆️ Call them ASAP. The longer you wait the more complicated they make it.

different states have diffrent rules but in ny you should be fine just keep claiming. the system will make you answer some additional questions after a few weeks to confirm your still eligible but otherwise you dont need to do anything else.

CALL THEM NOW!!! I waited and regretted it. Ended up stressing for weeks when a 10 minute call would have fixed everything.

•Were you able to get through easily? Every time I call I'm on hold forever and then get disconnected.

•Hell no it took like 20 attempts. Call at exactly 8:00am when they open or use that claimyr service someone mentioned. Thats what my cousin did after i told him about my nightmare experience

Your claim is in the dreaded "transitional period" lol. Keep certifying but also call to check on status because sometimes the computer system messes up during this time. If u hit 3 weeks with no payment defo call them.

i had the exact same situation. just keep certifying. they review your claim automatically. took about 3 weeks then i got paid for all the weeks i certified during the wait. no need to file a new claim until benefit year ends.

NY unemployment website says: "If you use all 26 weeks of benefits before the end of your benefit year, and you are still unemployed, you will not be able to collect again until your benefit year expires." So looks like if your benefit year isnt over yet, you should still be good to keep certifying.

•That's outdated info from before the pandemic. The rules changed after all the extensions and programs they added.

Here's what you do: 1) Take a screenshot of your current claim info showing 0 effective days but benefit year still active 2) Keep certifying each week without fail 3) If no payment after 2 weeks, call them I went thru this in January. Everything worked out but I was sweating bullets thinking I'd lose my benefits. The ny unemployment system is so old and glitchy.

•Thanks! That's a good idea to take screenshots for documentation. Will do that today.

I'm in literally the exact same boat right now! Hit 0 effective days last week but my benefit year doesn't end until March 20th. It's so nerve-wracking when you see that zero but still have bills to pay. I've been reading through all these comments and it sounds like the consensus is to keep certifying and give it 2-3 weeks before calling. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences - makes me feel less alone in this confusing mess. Going to take screenshots of everything like Samuel suggested and just keep my fingers crossed the system sorts itself out automatically. Has anyone else noticed if there's a particular day of the week payments usually resume when this happens?
